Hate to be "that guy" but in your opinion, is there a legitimate argument to be made that alcohol is in fact more detrimental than cannabis?
I don't really think one is necessarily more detrimental than the other. There are a myriad of potential ways that each can be harmful or lead to negative outcomes. Most of the time when this discussion comes up people will point to alcohol being more dangerous because of its ability in an overdose to kill someone. I just don't think it's as cut and dry as that. I do wish, with cannabis, that they regulated the strength/amount of THC (maybe they already do this? idk) as they do with alcohol content.
There's potential downsides of really any mind-altering substance, right? But in my experience the arguments usually go like this: -But the kids! -Well, it's supposed to be illegal to minors, just like alcohol. -But it's so harmful! -So is alcohol but it's legal. *then a choose your own adventure of* -well alcohol should be illegal too! -Discussion about the failures of prohibition. or -yeah well weed is worse because it's illegal! -which is a circular argument and hypocritical because the argument really boils down to social acceptance when both have downsides. Real hard to have an objective conversation about the ole topic in my experience, honestly.
Honestly legal narcotics have probably done more societal damage than any other substance...at least in the last 10-20 years.
Completely agree. There's plenty of nuance to the discussion and its typically never parsed through, at least in public/political theater, without significant bias one way or the other.
The use of marijuana and drug prohibition laws to enforce societal racism is the only argument you need for legalization. If you're making an anti-legalization argument without reckoning with that aspect of it your position is immoral
I assume you're referring to opioids? Because technically narcotics can be referred to a variety of mind-altering chemicals. I agree with you, however. As another tangent, this discussion then usually goes down another avenue of debate (which I'm not saying you're necessarily trying to start, just my experience) of whether or not certain substances are healthier for you because of their 'natural' origin versus something created in a lab. To which I'll say, at least with respect to cannabis, that the majority of what people are buying at dispensaries doesn't at all resemble the 'natural' origin that preceded it. So to say that it's a plant out of the ground in theory is true, but not the whole story at all.
Yeah I think everyone ITT realizes that and supports legalization in a big way because of that caveat. Potentially the main reason. Helpful to note for posterity's sake.
Right I'm no toilet doc. Opioids would be the more accurate term, for sure. And no, I know that the stuff that's available these days is entirely different than it used to be. I don't even do the pots but started down this because I think prohibition is generally a bad policy for most anything then when you talk about the tax revenue, relative downsides compared to other already legal substances, and racial justice aspects, it seems like a really obvious deal to me. Doesn't make everything cannabis harmless, for sure. Our politicians just never have an honest conversation about it which is infuriating. Fun Fact: As of 2010 Nebraska had the biggest disparity between white and black people arrests for weed possession in the entire country. Pretty, pretty neat crown to have there. EDIT: ^ Fake news - we have the highest black arrest rate. Not the highest racial disparity. Iowa has the highest disparity.
I live in CO and don’t take pot, but IDGAF if you want to buy. I say that as a preface to... Oregon lost their damn minds. I understand the decriminalization angle, but heroin and meth?
Should check out Portugal. They decriminalized all drugs in 2001 and it's been largely successful, particularly where they added treatment centers instead of prisons. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/05/upshot/portugal-drug-legalization-treatment.html
Nah, but I am willing to read. I am just a humble boy from Nebraska that is living in this bl*e state.
It's not like the wild west exactly. It mostly just uses drug treatment facilities instead of prisons.
Gut reactions to things without doing the reading are often bad. Inform yourself then decide if they lost their minds. Not the other way around
Have you FOOLS even seen a star is born? If Coops just sat around smoking blunts all day he’d still chillin will GaGa and that dog.
We're like what Bama football recruiting wishes it could be. There's a girl in Wahoo who's ranked in the top 40 national recruits who we didn't even have room for so she's going to USC.
Hilarious how the same people cheer on getting the best recruits in the country in volleyball but think more walk-ons and work ethic will be enough for the football team. Recruit the best players and have a great coach. Pretty simple recipe for success.
Any recs for a tattoo artist? Going to have him autograph my chest at fan day. (Yes, I’ll be wearing a mask)
This dude's film is probably the most impressive out of all our recruits. Pray to Tom that his 3-point shooting carries over to the next level. His signature is next level. Looks like he just wrote Z as many times as he could in 3 seconds.
I am watching the best sports team at our university play the second best team in the university Spoiler Red vs White volleyball scrimmage
We actually recruited some guys that can shoot. Lock up one more big-bodied rebounder/defender and there are going to be some good times in Nebrasketball over the next few years.
Hopefully he's as program changing as the other 5* men's recruits the school has gotten in Marlon Lucky and Baker Steinkuhler!
