Ive listened to everything and I think Ghosts of the Ostfront is the best. They are all great though in their own way, like a Ken Burns doc
id go death throes> blueprint> Ghosts> Khans> Punic Nightmares> big gap > king of kings with thusfar the Supernova series most likely going either side of punic nightmares
Restarted Blueprint yesterday. So damn good. I think one of the real strengths of Carlin is his ability to provide context in creative ways. When he is describing the Schlieffen Plan on the eve of the war, he describes the numbers in comparison to other great military forces in history. Sometimes in documentaries or podcasts, the numbers become kind of abstract and you lose perspective on how huge they are but when he is like "Napoleons' Grand Armee that invaded Russia was the same size as the force that swung through Belgium" suddenly you're like "damn that is insane."
id add to that the skill to zoom in to real life experiences of people in a way that really sticks with (in his better pieces) still progressing with the broader narrative
My only gripe about Blueprint was the last episode when he used the boxing analogy over and over and over again. Really should listen to Ghosts again because it's been so long since I've listened to.
Not an update, but if you aren't listening to Malcom Gladwell's Revisionist History podcast on Curtis Lemay and WW2 bombing you are not particpating in life correctly. Thus far, I have enjoyed these podcasts as much as any in this genre
Just about every scientist whose study has been cited by Gladwell has said he interpreted the data disingenuously. We’re seeing the fruits of his ‘The herd is usually more right than the experts” bs w covid. Good times.
Loved hearing him finally so this. My FIL is a big Trump supporter and calls himself a “constitutionalist libertarian.” He also loves Dan Carlin. Sent this to him with the quickness.
He says “both sides” and suggests both sides “not equally bad,” but hoo boy does he dance around just coming out with it.
True, but unlike prior episodes where he held back a bit on shit talking Trump outright, he unleashed in this one
Think he was trying to point out Dems and GOP both do similar things to support their own agendas but the GOP and Trump in particular are clearly such a bad faith actors and taking such constitutionally and morally wrong positions that you have to vote for Biden.
Update. Father in law says Hillary, Al Franken and Michael Cohen said they think the GOP will try to cheat so they're just as bad as Trump. He has yet to explain how Michael Cohen is part of the left or how pointing out that a guy who constantly cheats may try to cheat is wrong. He also said Biden is just as bad as Trump because "how did Hunter Biden get that China deal?" I can't even deal with him on politics any longer. No point in even discussing it.
yeah, still dont know how you couldnt see it coming in 16 but whatever. There mustve been some hope of an outsider doing outsider things with him given he dreamed of it so long
His usual response in person is "well hold on, the left.........we need to be fair to both sides." He said Dan Carlin only wanted to point out the flaws of Trump and wasn't fair and do the same thing to Biden. He also reminds you he's not GOP he's libertarian because he voted for Perot 30 years ago. He's voted GOP every time since then but isn't GOP. People forget that.
Carlin explicitly said on numerous occasions that Biden was problematic, too. Your father in law reminds me of my own family members. The minute you say an obvious and irrefutably true negative thing about Trump they immediately resort to, “But what about....?” My oldest brother was also a Perot voter. He claims that he supports Trump because Trump is a disrupter. But then he goes and starts repeating every single lie Trump has said as though it were gospel truth. I cut him off when he claimed Obama failed to fill over 800 open federal judgeships because I realize there is no reasoning with this type of person
Yeah I've hit the breaking point on talking about it with him. My wife already has. Whenever we talk politics he the next day sends a treatise email with 8,000 website links explaining why Trump isn't that bad and it's actual Democrats that are bad. My wife finally responded and said "Dad, I love you so much but Trump is a despicable human being that I will under no circumstances ever vote for or support. It makes me sad that you will overlook how awful he makes life for so many people because of you retirement account. I don't want to discuss this with you any further from this point forward."
Idk who Fridman is but looking at this guest list for the episodes, he seems like a idw chud it’s also 3.5 hours long. I’ll prob listen to a bit of it. I’m pretty caught up on my podcasts
He’s an AI researcher from MIT who focuses on autonomous vehicles (although I believe he recently left the university to launch a startup). Most of his guests are scientists and professors working in AI. He does have some IDW and non-AI guests as well.
Actually thinking about it for a bit more, the only IDW people he’s had on are a couple episodes with Eric Weinstein and a single episode w Rogan Edit: I guess he had Malice on too; wasn’t familiar w him
Man. This dude is so incredibly naive and just a better spoken version of Dave Rubin. Everything boils down to a ‘battlefield of ideas”. Thinks that if there was a charismatic leader who preached love and acceptance , Hitler never would have gained traction. Dan is being very courteous and hand holding him through all these dumb notions. It’s always fascinating how people who are clearly very intelligent in one area but some woefully equipped in another very basic topic. Dude is obviously pretty smart to be an AI researcher at MIT, but it’s like this entire social and historical perspective is from watching surface level History Channel documentaries
Last Podcast on the Left did a multi-part series on Norwegian Black Metal that is absolutely fantastic, one of their best in their library.
Listened to it on my drive from Chicago to StL this morning. It was great. Learned a lot. He said next episode will be the finale of the series.
I've been trying to listen to this series forever, but my commute is only 10 minutes. And with kids, I never find the time to listen. They're so damn long
