I do not have student loans. But I do have children who have student loans. And I work in an industry (housing) that has been significantly artificially depressed by the inability of an entire generation to form households at the rate they would be if that capital was freed up.

about 175k worth...on track for 10 more years of payments About 75k would be eligible for government forgiveness (if personally eligible) That would be ~$500/month right back into the economy

I paid off $78,000 literally this year. I’m absolutely for cancellation of student loan debt. It’s not some right of passage, it’s predatory lending shrouded in the guise of “well if you didn’t want it you should have never signed for it.”

I had minimal loans when I graduated after working full time and taking 6.5 years to get my degree. My tuition doubled over the course of those 6.5 years so I can only imagine what tuition would be at now for my shitty MAC school.

I had 67K from FSU undergrad, Texas grad school.

Worked a six-month full-time project on top of my full-time job for the express intent of knocking the 36K left on it and closed it out in April.

Others not having to do that would be fucking awesome.

Finished paying mine off right before COVID hit. The argument that "I had to pay mine back so others should as well" just reeks of privilege and ignorance to the systems that have marginalized and overburdened way too many.

That 60k will be eligible for forgiveness in 5 years so that's nice

I paid 3k/mo for 3 years right out of school when I was making nothing just to get them done. Was basically every extra dollar I had. Lived super super super poor. People not having to do that would be great because it sucked bigly.

The loans for people who didn’t actually get anything out of their degree or those who didn’t finish but are still tied to high rate paybacks from predatory practices is something the freedom crowd typically doesn’t consider.

I was lucky to get out as cheap as I did. But I do wonder all the time how much further ahead I could be if I didn't spent a few years dicking around in college accumulating debt instead of making money.

Then again I'd have probably not done anything smart with debt free money I would have made in my late teens and early 20s anyway.

I have student loads that I'm paying on. I don't think they should be forgiven. But if there is a convincing and compelling argument for why it should be done, then I'd consider changing my stance. I think the educational system failed a bunch of kids by pushing them into this situation, but I don't know that is enough to justify erasing trillions of dollars of debt.

Think of it as a giant stimulus that directly targets some of the people who could use a stimulus and energize the economy the most.

Beats the hell out of giving a trillion dollars to rich people.

First 4 years of undergrad I only had to take out loans for living (no money from parents). Grad school I got paid to do. The 5th year of undergrad cost as much as the first 4 combined.

Borrowed $360k for dental school, was 420 by the time I graduated with interest. Only about 170k left which I plan to pay off in next two years. By the time I pay them off I will have paid around $750k. If there is a forgiveness, even the day after I pay them off, I'm 100% for it. Fuck how student loans and the ridiculous interest put people in the hole for decades.
