It is beautifully obvious that on a subconscious level he’s very aware no one really loves him, including himself.

So, didn't read the book but have heard about it and some of the criticism. Movie didn't seem to do much of what your criticism of the book was and Def outlined his grandmother's support, getting college paid for via the military/GI Bill... wasn't overly self serving for him. Feel like, from criticism, the book went into a ton more detail about culture, political leanings, and other things that can't be fit into a 100 minute film. I can Def see the boot strapping angle come through. But that's hard to ignore when you come from a torn drug ridden family, but also plays on the angle of he got out from a stable home his grandmother gave him.
To add to the Hillbilly Elegy, JD is pretty conservative. His wife clerked for Kavanaugh and Roberts. He claims to be "socially conservative" and "became" Catholic recently. He also works for AEI. So he's a shitty person.
hes also in the tucker lane (at least tuckers rhetoric) about being an ethnonationalist he's a terrible terrible person who wrote a reductive book that misrepresented his own life to fulfill both his ideological goals and help his career
I said it months ago, everyone should read “Nobody Hates Trump More Than Trump” by David Shields. It’s a great book that illustrates a few simple facts. He hates himself and is desperately seeking approval. He never earned his fathers respect. He does exactly what he says he will do, the multi step conspiracies and whatnot are totally out of his depth. He tells you exactly who he says he is. It’s a quick read, recommend for all.
