Yeah it’s not the entire problem but it’s a solid 90% of it. You can’t score when we’re as compact as we are and as slow as we are. I feel we’re at least average everywhere else. Also Xhaka and Dani can be useful, just not going be productive in this set up.

i don’t see it with arteta tbh, at best he is a decent tactician, but terrible when it comes to man management and picks favorites to his detriment

it’d be one thing if we were playing this way with youths like amn, reiss, esr, and saliba, but he insists on playing willian, xhaka, and any other cb on the roster over saliba (safe to say since he isn’t even registered in any comp outside of the capital one cup i think)

gwen’s immature and not particularly athletic, but it’d be nice to see him out there over xhaka instead of being sent out on a loan

won’t even get into özil too much and he may very well be past it, but arteta clearly has no problem rolling out guys who are past it right now either.

Still dealing with the fallout of losing Wenger. He took over about 5 jobs now but got rid of a few more issues. Covid probably hampered his window a bit, but that’s not an excuse. It more down to being the worst team in Europe from a transfer perspective. Couple that with an out of control wage structure and you have yourself a stew.

Wonder if the best move here isn’t to just say fuck it with all the usual suspects and play the youth.

One of the more disappointing things about this is the chances these old guys keep getting.

I'm far from an Ozil truther, but it's hard to look at this stuff and not think that even a mostly-washed Ozil couldn't provide some level of improvement in the midfield.

to a lesser extent, Guendouzi, as well.

Maybe for the occasional game when the situation suited him and/or he felt up for it. But then there’s the games that aren’t easy for him, the “back injuries” and the “illnesses”. (All under Wenger) How can you placate a player widely believed to be disinterested and apathetic on the training ground when the team’s had a long standing reputation of lacking dedication and intensity?

Guendouzi is an indisciplined timebomb who’s best trait seems to be taking over a game by doing whatever he feels like wherever he feels like. There’s a reason he’s on his 4th team in what 5 years?

we have 3-4 players you could say similar things about that still wind up in the lineup every week.

like I said, I'm not here trying to say Ozil would solve our problems or something. I'm just saying that basically removing two bodies from the squad that could be giving you SOMETHING when you have so little else available to you seems very short-sighted at this point.

and I really hate that I just brought up Ozil because I'm so sick of talking about him, but if Arteta actually loses his job this season, taking a hard line on Ozil and Guendouzi when so many other players have been given chances over and over again, sure seems like it will be a contributing factor and worth noting when you talk about the job he did here.

I think Ozil had become largely unplayable and it’s difficult to know if he would be capable of performing in situations where he is needed and useful (see: yesterday, second half) when not playing otherwise because he’s an anchor. It’s just crazy to me that this squad has literally zero options at his position.

Guen so far hasn’t offered anything unique or particularly inspired, but - as with Ozil - a manager’s inability to get anything out of him definitely doesn’t give you a good feeling about either.

I think that's the macro issue for me when I look at Arteta. forget Ozil or Guendouzi the individuals - I don't think he really knows what he's doing with how he's managing the squad and his "non-negotiables" seem to vary from player to player, which makes them seem pretty negotiable actually.

all these things said, and being completely frustrated by the way we're playing, I think we should give Arteta two more windows.

I'm not confident it will lead to anything, but firing managers every other year is not a path I want to go down. let him bring in a few more players and turn over some dead weight on the squad before we judge him completely.

I don’t have super strong feelings one way or another (and certainly have no idea who we’d replace him with) but it seems like what really needs to happen is that whoever is running this club needs to get enough rope to feel like he neither needs to sign nor play, say, Willian instead of a youth option. Not tanking, but not blocking development, either (to which end Lacazette probably should have been sold last window).

Yeah, I'm in a unique position as someone who just started rooting for this club at the beginning of the 2106 season. Never really seen the great times.
However as a Buffalo sports fan, I've seen long periods of suckiness. And I can attest that changing coaching and management all the time is NOT the way out of that hole. It's very shortsighted.
And regarding youth, as a Penn State fan we've had a terrible season. But getting the younger guys some time they wouldn't normally get is a huge positive in such a down year. Against Michigan we had 4 true Freshman play really well, which bodes well for the future. So I would agree that I'm happy to give Arteta more time, but he really needs to start playing the young guys a little more often.

Yep, it’s like some of these modern managers don’t know how to use a player like that properly. Kante has had the same problem with a couple of Chelsea managers. Super Frank finally decides to put Kante at his best position and let him hunt and win the ball back - all of a sudden Chelsea are racking up clean sheets when we thought they were going to win games 5-4.

Would love to see if a Torreira/Partey partnership would work. Also interested if a Partey/AMN midfield would work, freeing Partey up to go forward more often and let AMN defend.

I won’t even start on Ozil, because I know you guys are sick of it. He’s not the future, he doesn’t train hard, etc. But against a low block or the packed 18 yard boxes we have frequently seen, he’s the only player at Arsenal that can pick a lock with his left foot. His delivery on set pieces would be better as well. Shame Arteta can’t get anything out of him.
