Gonna be 30 when its over so he will be wanting to get paid right when we should be competing again, wish we couldve got a couple more years.

Great value though and gives us flexibility.

I figure he will be due a payday when Raymond and Zadina are due paydays. If those guys are what we think they are, you can pay them and move Mantha. It’s a great situation for the team.

Steve keeping Mantha under Larkin’s deal is awesome.

Stevie has to name Larkin the captain this year right?

Yeah. I believe he already confirmed there will be a captain this season. My guess is Larkin gets the C, Mantha gets the A that Abby left behind. I’m curious if Hronek also gets a letter. Frans shouldn’t wear one any longer.

if we are not contending in four years, that’s a pretty big indictment on Yzerman. I would say we should be in playoffs by 2022.

It’s one thing to make the playoffs, it’s another to be a legitimate contender. I think we can make the playoffs in 2022, but realistically it’ll take until 2024 to have a team that can contend. The caveat to that is if we win the 2022 Draft Lottery and get Shane Wright.

Yes and no. We should be in the playoffs by then. It's going to depend on the development of the players currently in the system though. And maybe 1-2 in the next two years drafts.

2022-23 is now my target year for wings to be really competitive and Yzerman has a ton of flexibility to make it work

Currently the only contracts wings have on books that year are Larkin, Mantha, Seider and Veleno. Plus Abby buyout. Raymond will also still be on rookie deal that year.

If Raymond (top 6 f), Seider (top pair d), and veleno (3rd line c) pan out the way I expect, thats 3 top 6 forwards, a top pair d and a 3rd line center with only roughly 17 mil of cap taken up by all of them. And no bad contracts left on books. Assume Bert, Hronek and Zadina come back but even with their contracts, we can make a splash in FA

There are a few other guys who I think will be on roster on rookie deals that year as well. I expect some of the recent defenseman to challenge for spots that year as well.

We're in a really good spot, but we're going to need at least one more Larkin-level center (and preferably someone a step above that) before we can jump forward into something beyond a team that gets bounced in the first round in a few years, IMO

Just read the Bobby Ryan interview at The Athletic. I knew about the stuff last year in Ottawa. After reading that interview on top of some other things after it, that guy has lived a life.

A bummer, but I get it. Seider has arguably been the best player in the SHL. There is nothing to prove at the WJC.

I'm confused because I read an article saying wings wanted him available for camp. I thought SHL players had to stay all season there

Jesper Wallstedt currently the second best goal in the SHL. Just turned 18 a week ago.

For comparison, Askarov only played 1 game in the KHL last year.

Canada: Gordie Howe, RW (1946-71, 1,687 games, 1,809 points)
    USA: Chris Chelios, D (1999-2009, 578 games, 158 points)
    Finland: Valtteri Filppula, C (2005-13, 2019-20, 553 games, 272 points)
    Sweden: Nicklas Lidstrom, D (1991-12, 1,564 games, 1,142 points)
    Germany: Uwe Krupp, D (1998-2002, 30 games, 6 points)
Slovakia: Marian Hossa (2008-09, 74 games, 71 points)
Czech Republic: Vaclav Nedomansky (1977-82, 364 games, 247 points)
    Russia: Sergei Fedorov, C (1990-2003, 953 games, 954 points)
Best of the rest of the world (Ireland): Jim McFadden, C (1947-51, 253 games, 142 points)

The case for Steve Yzerman over Gordie Howe: He had a higher points-per-game average (1.16) than Howe (1.07), with 1,755 points in 1,514 games. His mid-career pivot to a more defensive role, coupled with the trap taking over the league, brought that average down. But, it's hard to deny Howe's six scoring titles and six Hart Trophy wins; and it's equally hard to deny that a guy named "Gordie" is, by default, the ideal Canadian rep.

(In all honesty, it's goalie Terry Sawchuk who had the best claim on Canadian icon, with three Vezinas and a Calder in his 734 games with Detroit. But, c'mon, it's Gordie Howe, people.)

Marian Hossa's one year in Detroit -- including his last 40-goal season -- was better than Tomas Tatar's career with the Wings. Nedomansky is a recent Hall of Famer. Belfast native McFadden is the third-highest leading scorer from the U.K., and the only player born in Ireland to win a major NHL award (the Calder).

Pavel Datsyuk (918 points in 953 games) should be a Hall of Famer eventually, and the Red Wings have had their share of incredible Russian players, but Fedorov was one of the most exceptional talents in NHL history -- a Hart Trophy winner offensively who was so good defensively he was used on the blue line.

Krupp is "standardmäßig," which is German for "by default."

Dominik Hasek? Two Stanley Cups in 4 seasons.

Also Gordie Howe is the easy choice over Stevie and Sawchuk

To build a team around for their career? I am taking Fedorov. Elite offensive, elite defensively. He could win a Norris trophy in todays game. Oveckin is slightly more productive offensively but I think Fedorov more than makes up for it defensively. Plus center > wing

Seider’s team had been off for a while due to Covid, but they returned yesterday and Seider had an assist. He has 8 points in 9 games.

Veleno had two goals. He has 8 points in 14 games.

Raymond hasn’t been scoring the last few games, but that appears to be a Frolunda problem. They have been getting bombed by teams. Last I checked yesterday they were losing 8-0. Niederbach is playing a lot for Froluda now though, which is crazy.

Berggren was suspended for three games following a cross check. I believe he served his final game yesterday.
