Yeah there’s no way it’s a representative sample of the population. I know several that have given blood specifically to see if they have antibodies when they don’t normally. I imagine that’s pretty common.

Its not a great sample set because of that specific influencing factor in my mind. However I am not sure if there is enough people who have had covid, who didn't get a positive test, would rush out to give blood to find out if they had it. That would indicate a large number of people were asymptomatic or had very mild symptoms, mild enough to not need a test and confuse it for allergies.

Honestly, the sample set is probably bad for a variety of reasons, as I don't know if older demographics donate more blood than younger, or if its the other way around... I just thought it was significant that they were finding antibodies in 2% of their blood donated. Thats a lot if those antibodies disappear within a few weeks/months.

Again, not saying that means 2% of the population has it, just that its a good number of people considering how many pints of blood are donated.

so i tested positive from the 21st

no symptoms until i lost my smell the following wednesday, but has since returned

everything i’ve read, and the lady i spoke to with my results says i’m ok to end my quarantine after 10 days from the day i lost my smell

i’m taking another test tomorrow to be safe, but she says that those results may still come back positive and that i wouldn’t be infectious

i’m not in any hurry to be back around people, but there are a couple of errands i’d like to run

should i wait for a negative or am i safe like i’ve read?

Trying to remember but I want to say it was into 2022 before things get sort of back to “normal” socially and then probably another 2 or 3 years before businesses and other tangential stuff gets sort of back to normal. Christakis wasn’t hopeful that 2021 would bring anything but sort of starting to think about getting back to normal because of distribution hurdles, production capacity, and then things like anti-vax. Said 50+% of the country will need the vaccine or to be sick to get to herd immunity and that’ll take a long time. Then that doesn’t mean covid goes away. We’ll still have to deal with it and probably do masks and social distancing all through next year at the very least.

He said this isn’t the beginning of the end. It’s the end of the beginning.

You’re doing a lot better than a power lifter I follow. Posted last week him doing squats in a gym, no mask, and remarked he was happy with the workout because he was on all kinds of cold meds and felt like shit. Fast forward to today where he tests positive after several other posts of him going to a store and hanging out with his family. Just amazing

These politicians that keep putting in strict protocols and then doing their own thing are getting people killed. This behavior will undermine the publics will to do the right thing. If they elite don’t do it why should I? That’s what people ask as these politicians shut things down and then attend parties and go out to dinner themselves.

San Jose mayor also told people not to do big gatherings and then attending a big thanksgiving that broke the current rules in California. Cali dems are so fucking bad at being politicians.

In St. Louis, the county executive has been under fire for shutting down restaurants since mid Nov (4 weeks but it will probably get extended). St. Louis City, and surrounding Mo counties are still restaurant open....he better not go out (or get caught if he does)

i think this is just catch up from holiday weekend,... but deaths will hit right around there in 2 weeks based on current lag adjusted cfr. Seems like we’re seeing a slight dip in cases, i feel like we’re only 3-4 days away from seeing that trend reverse from the holiday gatherings.

My wife’s grandmother continues to go on the gambling boat/day cruise and insists she feels more comfortable there than anywhere else. This summer I told my wife to call her and just tell her we are concerned about her doing that and without hesitation she said “Honey, it’s people like you in your age group that are ruining it for everyone. Going out without masks and not taking precautions. The boat is very safe and I feel comfortable every time I go on.” She’s going to live her life and at this point nothing we say is going to change that. She does always wear a mask and gloves and the boat is really the only thing she does in public but people will reason to do what they want to do at the end of the day.

Someone at my girlfriends company just got covid for a 2nd time. Symptomatic the first time and said it’s been worse the 2nd time. About 3 months apart. That’s the first person even anecdotally who I know of who has gotten it twice.

Does symptomatic the first time mean it was a still a mild case? Seems like there's more anecdotal evidence that a more intense first infection leads to a milder second infection. I'm half-ass guessing that it's all related to how strong of an immune response and the amount of antibodies you built up after the first infection.

Very very very doubtful. Last I saw there has only been a single documented case of true re-infection worldwide.

asking people to punt on life for a year by staying home is a big ask for younger people. when you're old and don't have many years left, its an even bigger ask to just burn a year

not saying i agree but i at least understand why old people just want to risk it and take advantage of the time they have left

Sorry... fewer than 30 as now. Still incredibly unlikely that it's a true reinfection. There are people who have lingering infections for months at a time, that is far more likely than a true reinfection.

I think it's good to recognize these different perspectives. We're all largely in the age where a year doesn't seem long and doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of our lives. To the young and old a year can be an eternity. Doesn't make being irresponsible the right choice but, for instance, I think there are lots of grandparents that are like fuck it let me see my grandkids and if I die I die, it'll be worth it not being away from them for that long.

    I get it.

Makes a lot of sense. She’s 85, still very active (played ping pong weekly pre covid) and has been a widow for 20+ years. She’s pretty much said she’s lived a great life and if it’s her time to go it’s her time to go.

Can't you test positive up to 3 months after initial positive? Probably an outlier that the 2nd positive resulted in symptoms but not the first, though.
