    The Poppy War Trilogy
    - I really enjoyed this trilogy. This is an asian fantasy that's pulls from earlly 19th century China. Great character development, plot, I like there was a lot of frustration w the main character. While I liked all the books, I feel like the sum of the trilogy was better than all of the parts. I would rate any of the books in the 9-10 range, but that's where I have the trilogy as a whole. Theres some really gruesome shit that makes the books not that enjoyable, but is great story telling. Idk maybe Im just a puss. This was the authors first books. She's only 24. That's so damn impressive.

The Fires of Vengeance Second book in an african fantasy series that Im absolutely loving. The description is gladiator meets game of thrones. I think it's a perfect description. Love this series so far. Really glad these are tacking off. The author self published these books. Think that's great.

I think that's it for me in 2020. Good reading year helped by nothing else to do in the pandemic. Also the year I discovered fantasy that I actually liked.. While I like ASOIAF, middle age Europe setting is meh to me. Found a lot that took place in Asia, Africa, modern urban setting. who knew!

The series keeps getting better. I have a newfound respect for Neville from reading the books, he improves so much more than I remember from the movies, and with his background I find definitely myself rooting for him.

Will start on the seventh book next to start my 2021 off with a good one, and am currently reading Obama's new memoir.

Finished with nearly 20,000 pages and nearly 5.5 million words read (according to readinglength.com).

    Here's to another year, fellas!

I'm big in to Appalachian noir type stuff. Read "Gods of Howl Mountain" by Taylor Brown. Very good, and highly recommended. Next up "The Last Wild Man of Borneo". Both were Xmas gifts, and with a couple days off from work, it's been nice to sit down and read for a bit.

Added both to my list. You might like Blacktop Wasteland by S.A. Cosby. Seems to have some similar themes based off the description of Gods of Howl Mountain

    42. Lethal Agent (Mitch Rapp #18) by Kyle Mills 7/10

    43. Ghosts of Alexandria by Micheal Lee Pope 5/10 This had a few interesting stories in it but not all of them were interesting and I didn't like the writing.

    44. Near Dark (Scot Harvath #19) by Brad Thor 7/10 This was another good installment in the series and started moving it forward in a different way after eliminating some characters in the previous book.

    45. Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge 5/10 This was by far the worst of the books on race relations that I read this year. I have tried to read a lot of different and well reviewed books on the subject this year and enjoyed and learned a lot from them, this one didn't move the conversation forward for me or teach me anything.

    46. Hunter Killer (Pike Logan #14) by Brad Taylor 7/10 I always enjoy this series but it doesn't ever seem to be the best books. I really like the characters but the stories often leave something to be desired.

    47. Everything I Need to Know I Learned from Dolly Parton: Country Wisdom for Life's Little Challenges by Editors of Media Lab Books 9/10 This was a very good book, with short stories and images from Dolly Parton's career and life.

    48. Missing Links by Rick Reilly 6/10 I enjoyed this book and thought it was a fun and quick read.

    49. Recursion by Black Crouch 10/10 Loved this book and have loved everything I have read by Crouch so far.

    50. The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin 10/10 This was an incredible book and I am very frustrated that I had not read it before now.

    51. I Choose You by Danielle Leduc McQueen 10/10 This was a very cute book that my girlfriend and I read together. Just about relationships and the goal of choosing each other everyday.

I came up one book short of my goal of 52 for the year and a couple of these were very short and easy to read and finish at the end. I need to challenge myself more and read more at the end of the year. I always seem to be on pace and then fall off the pace at the end of the year. I set my goal for 60 books for 2021 and am hoping to make that goal for the year.

    14) Thy Neighbor's Wife (Guy Talese) - 8/10
    15) Power of the Dog (Don Winslow) - 8.5/10
    16) The Anarchy: The East India Company, Corporate Violence, and the Pillage of an Empire (William Dalrymple) - 8.5/10
    17) What We Talk About When We Talk About Love (Raymond Carver) - 9.5/10

    18) Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War (Tony Horwitz) - 8/10
    19) The Cartel (Don Winslow) - 8/10
    20) A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century (Barbara Tuchman) - 9/10 -
Really great piece of history from Tuchman. This is mostly a history of Europe in the 13th century told via the life story of french lord Enguerrand VII de Coucy, son-in-law to Edward III. Coucy was somehow was deeply involved in pretty much every major event of the century. Book sort of plods along as Tuchman sets the table for what's to come but really gets going as Coucy comes of age. Includes great passages on the plague and the papal schism. It's long (850ish pages IIRC) but I thought it was really worth the time and I imagine most readers of history would, too.
    21) Economics: The User's Guide (Ha-Joon Chang) - 7/10 - Thought this was a pretty good primer from Chang. I think his best work came when describing each major school of economics, its history and relevance. He's clearly not a devotee of neoclassical economics which is appreciated considering that school's dominance. I thought he might have been a little ambitious when he devoted so much space to discussing derivatives and other financial instruments that led to the recession; I realize this book was written in the early teens and it was relevant then but it felt kind of out of place here. I did mostly enjoy his perspective and he's a decent writer considering his profession.

Next: 1) The Border (about 125 pages to go, was hoping to finish in 2020 but alas) 2) Lies My Teacher Told Me 3) The Jakarta Method

Kind of disappointed in my output this year. I think I will set a goal of 30 books in the hopes that it forces me to read more.
