The program is going to be a lot more attractive for a prospective coach with those guys on the roster. This off-season is the time to make a move and Swarbrick has to realize that. Hopefully Brey does too and he makes it easy in everyone by stepping down.
Ian Book had the world expecting Boykin to run a 4.7 because all he threw to him were back shoulder throws
that last year with boykin and claypool shouldve been a deep shot palooza but instead it was a run n grind
i somewhat agree but let’s remember the whining when Nd had Floyd, Tate and Rudolph and people were mad because weis was not running enough
whilst true to an extent that was like 20th on the issue list during weis tenure, it was defense, defense, defense or total lack thereof. ND has thrown for 7,9 or 8 yards per attempt for 6 out of the last 8 years, 1 year more (8.8 or something like that in a fuller year) and 1 year way less in the year we had wimubsh completing at 50% Im not saying we should be as explosive as OU, OSU, LSU last year or UNC with harrell but Texas had more long passing plays than ND and Ehlinger cant even throw. The current offense gives very little margin for error against good teams as it cannot cope with getting off schedule. We are at a playoff level in physicality but lack of explosiveness will keep hurting ND in those big games. think about the 2 biggest wins fromt the BK tenure, clemson this year and OU in 2012. Both had a run that broke away and both had some uncharacteristically long completions for the offense that season. It kept the team in the game and shifted momentum in pivotal points. Its like ND is having a waterfight with squirt guns and whilst ND might have a slightly bigger squirt gun the other guy has waterbaloons. Not saying ND cant make the other guy more wet but you damn well know that you have to avoid every single waterballoon to win
i like waterballoons but seriously I agree, Nd needed more explosive plays. I just watched half of a presentation by sark and he says it pretty clearly. It’s too hard to try to go 80 yards with 10 plays all the time, one guy will screw up at some point so you need to find ways to make explosive plays. He is talking about his rpo philosophy
Not to mention Brey recruiting for one more year without any home grown talent will set the program back even further He has to go this year. Throw the bank at Chris Quinn imo. Inglesby would be a pretty lazy hire. The program needs a shot in the arm with some new ideas
Man I can’t even read the pay boards anymore. Every single post is a complaint about something. I really liked the latest ofd podcast. The main dude was like this is the best stretch in all of our lives calm the fuck down. It’s fine to want more but I get to turn on my tv and watch Nd play a too 15 unc team and only be very mildly worried that we are going to lose. That is fucking nuts. /rant
Even when Freeman plays 3 down, he still fields a 4th rusher standing up on the LOS most of the time. So it’s still a 4 man front, basically.
Hes mostly 3 down of the games I've been through. But he has way more line depth at ND. I could see him using MTA more as a boundary DE in a 3 down look.
From Loy on Tyson Spoiler Notre Dame is looking to make a big splash in the class of 2022 and the Fighting Irish are in play for some top targets. One is set to make a decision very soon. Here’s the latest from Irish Illustrated. We reported early Friday morning that Notre Dame was beginning to make a move with St. Louis (Mo.) John Burroughs School four-star defensive end Tyson Ford, a top priority for the Fighting Irish and many other programs across the country. The 6-5, 245-pounder has narrowed his recruitment down to Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Georgia and Missouri, but there has always been a strong believe that he was going to end up with the Irish or Sooners come decision day. Well, decision day is just a few days away. Ford will announce his commitment on Monday, Jan. 18. The latest pulse has Notre Dame inching ahead of Oklahoma and pulling ahead. So, how is this happening? According to Irish Illustrated sources, new defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman has made a big impact on Ford and has the talented prospect feeling great about the Fighting Irish. The calls between both parties, at least in our opinion, is what is going to seal the deal for Notre Dame. Now, let’s not lose sight of who got the ball rolling on this recruitment and that is defensive line coach Mike Elston. He has been working really hard over the past few weeks leading up to Ford’s decision and trying to show all the ways Notre Dame separates itself from Oklahoma and the others. The fact of the matter is that this duo is pushing all the right buttons and we believe that it will result in a commitment for the Irish on Monday. Let’s see what happens this weekend and you know Oklahoma is going to make a run at him over the coming days to see if they can swing things back in their favor, but right now my 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction is firmly on Notre Dame. Per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Ford is the No. 117 overall player in America, No. 9 weak-side defensive end in the land and No. 3 recruit in Missouri from the class of 2022.
Freeman, Singer, and Wiltfong also with picks in for ND so this sounds like he already committed and will go public on Monday...that's quite a turnaround from a week ago
Kyren, Jordan Johnson, Rubio, and Tyson (assuming he announces for ND on Monday) show ND is making some serious headway in Missouri. Would LOVE to add DJ Wesolak as the elite Vyper from there as well. What a pair of DEs those two would be together in this class and throw in the Hawaiian as well
from the OU insider: Okay, folks. Brace yourselves. I know many of you are expecting this bit of bad news, but in the last couple of hours, Tyson Ford's recruitment has taken a drastic shift. I've been in contact with Ford directly, so I don't want to disclose too much here. But just one week after the Irish backed off their pursuit of Ford, they've managed to regain control in the race for his commitment. I'm not going to flip my CB just yet, but Notre Dame is in the driver's seat here. Academic prestige and proximity appear to be the driving forces therein; keep in mind that Ford attends private school in St. Louis and that South Bend is two hours closer to St. Louis than Norman is. A pledge to Notre Dame from the four-star 2022 DE would merely be the latest development in a brutal stretch of unfortunate luck for the Sooners on the recruiting trail. We'll see if Calvin Thibodeaux can reverse the course before decision day arrives.
I was a little hesitant when Swarbrick called me to increase my donation enough to cover Freeman's salary, but I'm feeling better about that decision now.
Maybe freeman can tea the rest of the staff how to recruit more effectively - a 180 in the right direction on a top 100 kid is great
I really don’t want to be critical of Clark lea since he was so great at Nd but one thing that he was not very good at was recruiting, not bad but just not very good. If freeman is close to him with gameplanning and adjustments then we might have a better dc than before which is pretty unreal. I will wait and see though, lea will be tough to replace.
The weirdest thing about the last few years is how good of a recruiter Long was, and then seemingly universally hated upon enrollment. Last year's class really stalled, especially on offense, and a lot of people suggested it was the loss of Long - their best recruiter
Long was directly responsible for landing Jordan Johnson, Chris Tyree, and Michael Mayer. He is definitely an elite recruiter and is missed. It’s too bad he’s an amazing asshole
You guys have no idea how charismatic Freeman really is. With him selling ND, this is going to be fun to watch.
Wonder if Freeman would ever negative recruit against OSU. “I was faced with the 40 year decision 15 years ago, and it’s worked out for me to go to OSU over ND, but I was one play away from wishing I had that ND degree to lean on.”
