In the run up to the Civil War in the 1840-50's people and politicians talked about slavery in terms of favoring "Union" or "Disunion." Those in favor of Disunion got their wish and lost the war. I'm not certain why this "unity" bullshit is the new gotcha talking point on the right, but does get my spidey sense a tingling.
