Orny reporting on it as well saying it’s 90% done.

I don’t care about the whole angle of not developing talent for other clubs. He plays for Real Madrid - not utd or spuds.

at worst, cover for ESR. At best, replace Xhaka or ala Silva / debruyne, play him and ESR with Partey at the back.

Brighton has a shit defense as well. I think this allows Runar to go out on loan at least and we have a somewhat competitive backup. He always played well against us. Again - stop gap until we can get through to the summer and secure a long term option.

experienced international keeper, and boyhood arsenal fan - at least he’ll give it all and won’t let shots slip through his hands.

A piece from Athletic about potential CM options - odegard in there ..

Scouting creative talents Arsenal could sign: Pellegrini, Brandt, Christie

James McNicholas and Mark Carey Jan 10, 2021[IMG] 136 [IMG]
Finding players in the January transfer window is no easy task. Arsenal’s search for creativity may require them to be, well, creative. With that in mind, The Athletic has used statistical profiling to try and identify some potential targets.

Emile Smith Rowe has performed admirably in an attacking midfield role for Arsenal, but at 20 years old it is unfair to put too much pressure on him to consistently produce the goods creatively. So which players across Europe might be of interest to Arsenal?

Under technical director Edu, Arsenal’s current recruitment process sees them start with a positional need. They will then compile a list of names — some acquired via traditional scouting methods, some from video analysis, and others from analytics. That last portion is the responsibility of StatDNA, Arsenal’s internal analytics operation, led by Sarah Rudd.

While Stat DNA (now rebranded as Arsenal Data Analytics) has its own methodology they use to identify potential targets. To emulate that, we have used smarterscout: a site that gives detailed analytics on players all over the world, whose ratings you can think of a bit like the player ratings on FIFA but powered by real data and advanced analytics.

To begin our scouting search, we want to have some basic filters in place before getting to the attributes we care about. For a start, we only focus on a subset of leagues: those who’ve played as a central or attacking midfielder this season and are aged 28 or under. With Arsenal needing to redress the age profile of their squad, we tried where possible to focus on talent under 25.

The leagues in question are the top five in Europe — La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and, of course, the Premier League — alongside the top leagues in Belgium, Holland and Scotland. There might be some underrated gems in this league that, at some point, will make their way to larger leagues.

What’s encouraging is that some of these names have already been linked to Arsenal — if the interest is genuine, it suggests some statistical grounding for their pursuit. Others, however, are relatively fresh. We begin with a Japanese international catching the eye in the Bundesliga.

    Daichi Kamada
    Club: Eintracht Frankfurt
    Age: 24

First, let’s return to a player who was highlighted in a previous Arsenal scouting search, Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Daichi Kamada. Over the course of 2019-20, he racked up 10 goals and nine assists in his 48 appearances. Arsenal fans will remember the 24-year-old for scoring an excellent brace in Frankfurt’s 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium. In Unai Emery’s final match in charge, Kamada struck with either foot from the edge of the box to seal the Spaniard’s fate.

The Japanese international has continued to show highly impressive attacking output this season, most notably by his ability to create scoring chances and progress the ball. His seven assists in 12 league starts for Frankfurt is not to be sniffed at, and his average ball retention ability reflects the fact that he chooses for the “high risk, high reward pass” that Arsenal need more of.

Most of his football is played as one of two attacking midfielders behind a central striker. However, he is also capable of playing from wide areas if required. Kamada signed a new contract in September 2020 that runs until 2023, but given his impressive form it feels inevitable Frankfurt’s resolve to keep him will soon be tested.

    Julian Brandt
    Club: Borussia Dortmund
    Age: 24

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has already reported on Arsenal’s interest in Julian Brandt. The German international, also 24, is someone who is very competent in possession, as evidenced by his strong link-up play volume since last season, shown in the pizza chart.

While his profile has changed slightly this season compared to last, Brandt has played a lot fewer minutes for Dortmund — and when he has, it has tended to be further forward. His attacking output shows that he creates chances by progressing the ball (82 out of 99).

Like Smith Rowe, Brandt has the capacity to make runs in behind, which has led to his occasional deployment as a pure forward. In December, then Dortmund manager Lucien Favre explained: “Tactically speaking, he runs very well in behind the opponent’s lines. That’s why he plays striker sometimes. He is quite fast and can run deep. We need that and he can do it very, very well.”

However, much of Brandt’s best football has been played as a number eight. He would immediately provide Arteta with a range of tactical options. Positional deployment can dramatically influence a player’s statistics. Just look at how his defensive contribution and dribbling came to the fore last season when operating in a deeper role.

The challenge when it comes to Brandt is principally availability — it is only 18 months since he joined Dortmund, and with a contract running until 2024 they are under no pressure to sell. Arsenal just had to take out a £120 million loan from the Bank of England to help with cash flow, so they are operating under certain budgetary constraints.

    Emi Buendia
    Club: Norwich City
    Age: 24

Certainly a fan’s favourite, and his name always seems to be at the forefront of discussion when teams are looking for a creative midfielder. Buendia does feature on Arsenal’s internal list of potential targets.

Look at the numbers and it’s easy enough to see why, with the Argentine maintaining strong creative output in the Championship. As you can see from his pizza chart, he is particularly adept at making progressive passes that lead to a chance on goal. This is supported by his creative output of 0.54 non-penalty expected goals (xG) and expected assists (xA) per 90, showing a likelihood of a goal contribution every other game — the highest of all attacking midfielders in the Championship.

A notable attribute of Buendia’s performances this season is that he doesn’t shirk defensive responsibilities, and is elite at recovering loose balls (99 out of 99) and disrupting opposition moves (97 out of 99).

Unfortunately, there are two factors against this move happening in January. Firstly, Norwich are in the middle of a promotion push, so there is understandable resistance to the idea of selling their best player halfway through the season. Buendia also plays much of his football drifting infield off the right flank — an area where Arsenal are already well stocked with Bukayo Saka, Willian and Nicolas Pepe. This may be one to revisit at the end of the season.

    Angelo Fulgini
    Club: Angers
    Age: 24

Given the predicted mass exodus from Ligue 1, an outside shout for a “bargain bucket” signing could be Angers midfielder Angelo Fulgini. Another player who profiled surprisingly well in France was Strasbourg’s attacking midfielder Adrien Thomasson, but at 27 he does not fit the age profile Arsenal require.

Fulgini’s attacking output looked particularly strong last season, showing himself to be a competent ball carrier who could get himself into the box. His ability to defend from the front also caught the eye in 2019-20, which would suit the pressing game Arteta occasionally chooses to employ.

However, Fulgini’s more recent form shows the importance of watching players over long periods and not relying on too small a sample. Much like Angers’ position of seventh in the table, the 24-year-old’s output is now looking distinctly average, with a substantial drop off from last season. There could be an argument that he looks to be a Jack of all trades, master of none — but that is unlikely to be the sort of mantra that Arsenal will be going for in the transfer market.

    Lorenzo Pellegrini
    Club: Roma
    Age: 24

Another player who we discussed in June was Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini, who has continued to impress in Serie A this season. As an indication of his creativity, his expected assists is 0.32 per 90 which is the fourth best in Serie A. This shows he is creating chances of a quality that would be expected to lead to an assist every three games.

This ability is reflected in his pizza chart with a score of 97 out of 99 for xG from ball progression, which shows how a player’s actions increase the likelihood of his side scoring when in possession.

Pellegrini’s defensive skills would also be desirable to Arteta. With a defending impact of 82, it highlights his solid ability to disrupt the opposition in progressing forward.

Pellegrini, 24, is capable of playing either between midfield and attack or in a deeper role. Arsenal’s scouts watched him extensively during his spell with Sassuolo prior to joining Roma in 2018, and the club have continued to monitor his development since.

The reason this name is so interesting is because of his contractual situation. Pellegrini’s deal expires in the summer of 2022, and despite lengthy negotiations Roma have been unable to secure an extension. The deal is also understood to contain a release clause in the region of €30 million. The biggest obstacle would surely be convincing a boy, playing for the team he first joined as a nine-year-old, to leave in the midst of a title chase.

    Ryan Christie
    Club: Celtic
    Age: 25

Another player who profiles well on the ball is Ryan Christie at Celtic. Although Celtic have struggled this season by their own standards, Christie rates strongly as an attacking threat, particularly with a high shot volume and ability to receive the ball in the box. Christie’s shooting from range is hit-and-miss — five of his six goals this season have come from outside the box, but there are plenty of misfires in there too.

His defensive output shows he is effective at breaking up play and disrupting opposition moves through tackling, fouling, blocking and clearing. He has a good work ethic to match his technical play. Where he falls down is decision-making, but under the right coach that could potentially be put right.

Of course, the quality of the league is something that needs to be taken into consideration. However, with Kieran Tierney doing so well since his move from Celtic, could the 25-year-old Christie be another Scotsman worthy of a move to Arsenal?

With Christie and Celtic’s form fluctuating this season, this might be a good time to cash in on him — he’s yet to extend a contract that expires in the summer of 2022.

    Martin Odegaard
    Club: Real Madrid
    Age: 22

Despite having an impressive season at Real Sociedad last term, Martin Odegaard is yet to gain the trust of Zinedine Zidance at Real Madrid and could be on the lookout for more regular minutes. To date, he has started just three La Liga matches for Zidane, with the old guard of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric squeezing him out.

As we highlighted in June, his profile from last season showed elite attacking output. His high numbers on xG from shot creation and ball progression shows how could be the one Arsenal need to unlock a defence.

His carry and dribble volume of 95 out of 99 also shows how his strength in driving his team up the pitch, with an end product where it matters.

At 22, Odegaard is the perfect age for a new signing — but if he became available, competition for his signature would surely be intense. Could a lack of game-time allow Arsenal to pry him away on loan, as they did with Dani Ceballos?

    Aaron Ramsey
    Club: Juventus
    Age: 30

Lastly, a walk down memory lane. Any statistical scan of Europe’s major leagues will see Ramsey pop up on the radar. Given that he’s now 30, this ship has almost certainly sailed. The chances of Ramsey returning to Arsenal are slim, but interesting to look at his profile in the context of these others and ponder what might have been.

The Welshman always did have a knack for linking the play and popping up at the end of attacks, and his ability has remained with particularly strong ratings of 98 for link-up play volume and 95 for receptions in the box. Perhaps due to the emphasis on defensive organisation in Italian football, his defending qualities look as strong as ever (even if he’s still not contesting headers).
