Really just need a QB to step up/in and we’ll be fine I think. Easier said than done, and if we ride with Taysom we’ll be average as fuck but the roster is still pretty loaded for the next two years.

Athletic summary on our offseason. Gonna be interesting, forgot how short term the Winston and Hill deals were.

    Larry Holder
NEW ORLEANS – Changes, they are a coming for the New Orleans Saints.

The assumption that this would be Drew Brees’ last season began probably around this time last season. And the quarterback’s Hall of Fame career likely ended in a fiery inferno Sunday in the Superdome with a 30-20 loss to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A Fox broadcast camera even caught the 42-year-old Brees pointing to Jameis Winston with about one minute left in the game and appearing to say, “This is your team.” That’s a telling piece of video given how Winston, not Brees, provided the biggest offensive jolt on a deep first-half touchdown pass to Tre’Quan Smith.

What the Saints also will become fully aware of once the dust settles from this defeat is the number of decisions and moves that will occur this offseason as a new era begins.

“That’s the nature of this league,” running back Alvin Kamara said. “From coaches to equipment staff, the training staff. You know it changes every year. The door is always revolving with people coming in or people going out. It’s just kind of one of them things.”

Of course, it starts with Brees.

Who will be the Saints’ quarterback next season?

There are the obvious in-house candidates of Winston and Taysom Hill, who missed Sunday’s game with a knee injury.

We know by now how much Sean Payton values Hill. And we’ve witnessed Hill’s audition as the starting quarterback for four games this season when rib injuries sidelined Brees. Despite going 3-1 in Brees’ absence, the jury certainly seems out on Hill, who has only one year remaining on his contract.

Winston, like Hill last year in the wild-card round against Minnesota, contributed in the postseason, finding Smith on a deep ball for the Saints’ first touchdown Sunday. His arm talent has never been in question. It’s more about the mental makeup and penchant for turnovers. It’s also not a 100 percent guarantee that Winston returns since he was on a one-year deal. Still, it makes sense for him to return and compete for the starting job.

The NFL Draft could easily come into play. I’m doubting the 2021 starter would be discovered in this year’s class. But there’s no question the Saints will evaluate this year’s crop closely.

Or maybe the Saints examine the veteran free-agent route. After all, Brady almost became the Saints quarterback if Brees would have retired after the 2019 season.

Then there’s the rest of the roster.

This team was built to win the Super Bowl this year. How many rooms will the Saints renovate?

Managing the salary cap might be more of a challenge for general manager Mickey Loomis and cap guru Khai Harley, who habitually work their salary cap magic. But being nearly $100 million over next year’s salary cap, according to Spotrac and Over the Cap, could force the Saints to let pending free agents walk and other key veterans still under contract to either take pay cuts or be released.

Defensive end Trey Hendrickson played his way into far more money than the Saints probably anticipated with his 13½ sack season. You have to wonder how high Hendrickson will be on the priority list given the Saints are still waiting for Marcus Davenport to produce. And I’m assuming there will be a market for Hendrickson outside the Saints facility.

Sheldon Rankins, the team’s 2016 first-round pick, has played out his rookie five-year deal. The defensive tackle’s future with the Saints feels murky at best (Spotrac places his value at $11 million per season). Malcom Brown will enter the final year of his deal in 2021 and releasing him would save $5 million.

The Saints typically aren’t in the business of re-signing safeties. This could mean the end for Marcus Williams. He improved his play this season from the last couple of years. History, though, has proven the Saints move in another direction once it’s time for a second contract. Ask Malcolm Jenkins and Vonn Bell.

At linebacker, the Saints could venture away from Alex Anzalone and Kwon Alexander. Anzalone just wrapped up his last season under contract after a mediocre four years. The Saints traded for Alexander to upgrade from Anzalone, but his season-ending injury and contract could end his time in New Orleans.

Jared Cook’s final act as a Saints tight end could have been his costly lost fumble against the Bucs. The veteran probably played his last downs in New Orleans, paving the way for 2020 third-rounder Adam Trautman. Along the offensive line, guard Nick Easton might not feel too comfortable since the Saints would save $5 million by releasing him.

Even someone as beloved as punter Thomas Morstead could be in jeopardy. He seemed off this season and New Orleans already has his possible replacement in the building after stashing Blake Gillikin on injured reserve all season.

Veterans like wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders and cornerbacks Janoris Jenkins and Patrick Robinson could see their time cut short as well.

There’s already movement on the coaching staff and the front office. Dan Campbell should be leaving his assistant head coach/tight ends coach duties to take the Lions’ head coaching job. Defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen is a candidate for the LSU defensive coordinator job. Terry Fontenot should be exiting his assistant general manager post to take the Falcons GM job.

I recall the massive turnover following the 2013 season. That felt like the end of an era with players like Jonathan Vilma, Will Smith, Darren Sproles, Jenkins, Lance Moore and Roman Harper either released, traded or not offered another contract. The probable loss of Brees combined with other likely roster shifts could make this offseason resemble that one.

Saints fans remember what ensued the next three seasons: 7-9, 7-9, 7-9.

I’m not saying that will happen in 2021. But there’s zero question the Saints have a pretty intense transition after this year’s “Super Bowl or bust” season went bust. And it’s more than simply Brees.

seems like every year at this time we hear about being in cap hell and then still put together a good team, but at some point all pigeons have to come home to roost.

I know we're going for it again next year, but if after that our rebuild looks like 2014-16 where we go 7-9 for a few years I can handle that. It's the 3-13/4-12 seasons that drain your will to live, especially if you're expecting a good year and end up falling apart, a phenomenon also known as Falconing.

They will, Underhill did a little bit of a deep dive into the cap and it's really not going to be that hard to get under and even create some cap room for next year if they want to keep being compeitive. If they want to take the hit next year and then re-tool for a run they could do that also. I don't see them doing that though - this is a really good team and as much as I liked Brees as our QB he held us back some last year. We went 8-1 with Bridgewater & Taysom. I think this is a playoff team if we keep the roster in tact and go with Taysom or Winston. If Coach Payton has trust in Winston I'd love to see the offense open things back up and take shots - he's just gotta be a low teens turnover guy, not a 30 INT guy, and I think he can be. Payton is good at putting players in positions to play to their stregnths - Arians was good at taking shots and putting it all on the QB when it clearly wasn't working.

Also - if anyone does like following the Saints pretty close Nick Underhill does a great job, and went out on his own and created his own subscription model (think it's 100/yr, $10/mo something like that). He puts out great articles a few times a week and I recommend signing up for his stuff- at the very least he's a great follow on twitter, and puts out a good weekly podcast.

I'm skeptical, but if he's on the market he's one of the few that trading away the future makes sense.

Any type of deal though would have to happen very quickly. We can't resign Jameis and then trade for Wilson, and I don't think we can sit around waiting without Jameis looking elsewhere.

    the future is now

Window is still open but we have to capitalize on our great defense while we still have those guys, and before Kamara starts the typical RB deterioration.

When we traded for Ricky we were a suck ass team with a suck ass roster. This year we were a great team with an aged QB who should have retired holding us back
