I’m enjoying that 2/10 people in Heidi’s group chat turned her in to the NYT. Factor that she and Ted are in the chat and 40% of that chat hates them.
I’m literally in his exact situation and the thought never crossed my mind. And I’m not even a senator!
In which the Congressman from North Carolina displays his firm grasp on *checks notes* Vatican employment law.
My wife read Hillbilly Elegy back when it was on the best seller list and tried to talk me into picking it up because I grew up in a steel town. I didn’t want to waste the effort to read through a bunch of recycled, right wing welfare queen stereotypes adapted to white trash in a steel town, so I passed.
I have a friend who grew up in Middletown who recommended it to me. He said it was mostly inaccurate, but there were some kernels of truth in there. Ill probably read it eventually and get annoyed.
Remember when you melted down because a white supremacist died and people were glad, but he rooted for the same college team as you so you decided he was a good guy?
This reminds me of something a staunch libertarian I know said about Ben Shapiro. It was something to the effect of "I think he's probably right about 20% of the time, but that makes him worth listening to." It blew my mind that somebody who is about 20% accurate is worth listening to for their occasional nuggets of wisdom. That's a Rob Deer level success rate. And I'm not implying that you're doing that in any way. It is just what your buddy's comment made me think of.
Yeah, that’s my biggest issue with Vance. He grew up in Middletown in the 1990’s when it was growing at a 10% clip as the Warren and Butler County suburbs spilled into it. The steel industry collapsed in the 1970’s and one of the few domestic producers who emerged stronger from it was AK Steel in Middletown. He didn’t grow up in poverty in Appalachia.
Yeah it thought it had the place to itself, called a few bitches to come over and chill, and then Ted came moping back in.
This is also oversimplifying the years of arm twisting, stumping, and shaming Bernie and advocates did.
I believe the accurate definition of being "Medically Vulnerable" to the coronavirus is being a human
That was my biggest takeaway. I almost feel a teeny tiny bit of sympathy from them for being immediately sold out by people who they presumably thought they were friends but then I realized that probably only happened since they were really shitty to them personally.
You have to keep in mind the series of bad beats Rogan Libertarians have taken over the years after locking on to people who "some of what they say makes sense." Milo, Ben, Gavin, Jordan and the like. 20% is actually a pretty high bar for the Rogan crew.
J.D. Vance is Appalachia's version of Dicaprio's character in The Departed basically. Didn't grow up there but spent like weekends there then went home.
Donald Ray Pollock’s 2008 book of short stories, Knockemstiff, should be the authentic hillbilly elegy.
I read Hillbilly Elegy. It's not that it's particularly untrue, it's that the conclusions are all wrong.
youre in Texas going through this shit so I’d feel like a complete asshole if I continued. I hope you kept reading and saw I was just fucking around.
Honestly, would be pretty cool if Diamond Joe had any sort of power to make such a big change in 10 days. Might have a stew going.
I think people confuse energy independence with Net Exporter. The US became a net exporter of oil under Trump
