I was using live shrimp. I had no clue the area I was in had sheephead. At first I thought it was a redfish or a stud trout. It was ripping out drag.

I'm hitting it up every Friday, so hopefully I'll get lucky. I've been getting several a week in the 14-15" range and have gotten two 19"ers but haven't broken the 20" range yet.

Hitting Bull Shoals with some friends coming up from Alabama next weekend. Got my rod and reel set up today. Rod is newish. The reel is a Pflueger Progress 1774 from the 60s. All we've got is vintage fly reels. Still, looks pretty clean. Probably didn't put as much backing on as recommended, but its definitely not as large as the newer aged reels seem to be.

Anybody got tips or videos/resources on learning to cast? Gonna get out on a lake a few times this week with a dock just to get some practice in. Never done any fly fishing so it'll be an experience. Taking plenty of spinning reels for when I inevitably get frustrated.

Any recommendations for a rod to pair with a 3000 Penn? It will mostly be for flats fishing and I'd like to stay under $150.

I'm assuming you are trout fishing? You don't need to double haul and get 60+ feet out. You will need to mend your line

Yes, you need the backing, but unless you are fishing for really big saltwater fish or fishing weights way under what you should, you'll never see the backing. The backing really just allows you to pick up line quicker as the further from the center of the spool, the larger the arbor so more pickup per turn.

I was saying if you are freshwater trout fishing in streams or small rivers, you won't need to make really long casts, which is where double hauling comes in. It's not hard, but takes a while to get the timing down.

You just need to be able to cast probably 20-30 feet at most. You will need to mend your line which fixes the bend in your floating fly line caused by the current. I'd watch a video on that.

Don't sorry about the age of the reel. Like I said it's just a like holder.

    What weight is it?

Oh and just make sure you practice casting in grass. Don't do it in the road. Your fly line will get destroyed

I'm going to practice at a nearby lake. Should I use a fly to practice with or just some light weight?

The pole is #6 and I put #6 line and leader on it. Read afterwards it may have been a little easier to learn with one higher weight but idk.
