The most progressive politician we’ve had run for governor in my lifetime barely fucking lost in 2018 but somehow it’s Bernie’s fault and not these dogshit centrists who got dragged in November
Nevada is pretty solid blue at this point and the gap is only widening imo. GA, NC, and AZ are ripe though. It's lame to see NC not trending blue as quickly as VA
thats interesting, i thought that was an of counsel just for show. Maybe he is like Gowdy and just prefers easier ways to lining his pockets.
Issue there is it has Ohio-levels of voters without a college degree. And Dems need to right the ship with Hispanic voters.
Well fuck them then I don’t want them voting with me. Ruining the lives of people in another ain’t worth it. They're fucking trash bag humans.
Oh I did too but it looks like this is for real with him. Don't know if we'll see him in politics again. Despite the abject piece of shit he is he is remarkably pleasant to deal with.
This is a bad take at this time. I get the frustration, but Dem's all voted for those other stimulus packages, and this is only 6 weeks into this term. If the crisis continues I am sure this group of Democrats will fight for more (whether they win is another story). In addition, stimulus is more than just direct payments. Some of the support is more holistic towards solving the problem.
Go look up Gillum’s comments on Venezuela, way more hawkish compared to other progressive politicians . He got 59% in Dade and was a good candidate. single issue voters ...
Well you know what fuck Gillum too and fuck every single Venezuelan in Dade as well. No one should have to suffer because these people are garbage. I'm sick of these pieces of shit right wingers wanting us to ruin lives in South America. No more of that shit. It's not ok, none of it is ok. They aren't going to vote for a progressive no matter what we do so fuck em. Florida is a lost state nothing can be done. I'd rather lose
Ah, didn't realize it was a full bill. So unless they grow a set, it'll die in the senate and not get 60 votes
Not a bad take at all. Surely you recognize how poorly Dems handled the check/direct payment (the only part people will remember in two years) part of this bill. This was their one chance at getting anything through. There will be zero republican support of any legislation for the next four years.
classic snakesism. i meant to say he nearly won. kennedy beating him at the convention in '60 was a major upset. i was just pointing out that LBJ was a very influential senator before he ran for VP.
I think they came out with a decent result. I think we all will always feel like there were opportunities for more, but this is how business is conducted and to get 50 votes it seems like what was required given who is elected. Again, commenting 6 weeks into the process when this is one of the biggest relief bills ever versus 4 years of a track record from Trump feels overly reactionary, especially since Dems have voted for all stimulus checks in a bipartisan way and Rep's have only voted for those that they sponsored.
it’s common bc of gaps in Immigration status. Many that flee Venezuela put in a request for TPS protections then wait years in limbo that shut them out of jobs they have education and experience for. K. Bell’s CNN show had an episode a few months before the election on this topic and was an omen for the margin shift on Nov 3. Dems have to hit 60% in Dade to ever turn it around
Bernie's Hispanic consultant who got a ton of play post-election pretty much said the Spanish language ads in South Florida were as dishonest as he'd ever seen. I'm not sure how you break into that bubble.
Correct, LBJ is one of the most notable and successful senators of all time. Why I put him in his own category is because of the circumstances of his swearing in, and re-elect that were unique. He didn’t have the Senate -> Oval path that JFK/Obama had
No, I’m tired of right wingers coming to Florida. I don’t give a fuck if they’re from Venezuela or New York. Stay the fuck out if we really wanted to help the Venezuelan people we’d lift all sanctions and send tons of aid this is about appeasing people we shouldn’t be appeasing in the first place and it’s disgusting
Not surprising that he's considering it, but I hope he holds off, whoever gets the Dem nomination will lose to Greitens.
I can't see them favoring Greitens for the R ticket. While Missouri is incredibly dumb, his name is pretty toxic.
Not to mention more money going out to families. Family of 4 round 1 got $3400 will get $5600 this time plus the 17+ dependents included now as well. Such a narrow scope and like you said only 45 days in. No doubt more will be done if needed later this year.
Man I can't keep straight the takes on immigration in this thread. So fuck some people fleeing persecution and deport them but welcome others?
FWIW on expectations, any further stimulus is either going to require 10 R votes, elimination/neutering of the filibuster or reconciliation rules, or will have to wait until next year. I think the argument is disingenuous, but you only get one shot at reconciliation a year.
Question: with the change to the 10k of unemployment being exempted as taxable would it be in my best interest to file an amended return since my wife was laid off and got like 9k that wasn't taxed? Already filed and got my return but figure this would provide some more relief on the return side.
Totally missed that being put into the bill. Changes me from owing to refund. Fuck yeah. I would say give it a bit. The IRS will probably announce a procedure for handling all that.
Cane is rightfully pissed since it's his state, but historically a lot of Cubans and South Americans weren't fleeing persecution but rather right-wing governments that were ousted by left-wing groups who implemented measures to redistribute wealth. I can't speak to anyone leaving Venezuela today but it's fucking insane that we would only give them immigration priority instead of ending an imperialistic and hegemonic policy of extreme sanctions which is driving the unrest.
why'd your family flee cuba well castro took over and? my parents lost their business which was? i dont wanna talk about it
My dad was an accountant. He was getting arrested because he’s also a Catholic deacon who was going around at night to administer communion after churches were shut down. He was literally put on a plane by a friend in the party and sent to Spain on the day the police showed up at my parents’s door because he had to escape. So, yeah, it’s interesting how now you’re suddenly down with painting with a broad brush.
So people can face extra judicial killings, torture, and jail and be barred from our country unless they vote democrat. Ok.
Let me help you out: Venezuela continued to experience an unprecedented human rights crisis. Extrajudicial executions, arbitrary detentions, excessive use of force and unlawful killings by the security forces continued as part of a policy of repression to silence dissent. The political and institutional crisis deepened in the first months of the year, resulting in heightened tensions between the Executive under Nicolás Maduro and the Legislature headed by Juan Guaidó. Growing social protest was met with a wide range of human rights violations and an intensification of the policy of repression by the authorities. Prisoners of conscience faced unfair criminal proceedings. Freedom of assembly and expression remained under constant threat. Human rights defenders were stigmatized and faced increasing obstacles in carrying out their work. Those suspected of criminal responsibility for crimes under international law, some of which may constitute crimes against humanity, and human rights violations enjoyed almost total impunity, resulting in a lack of trust in the judicial system. There are a number of civilians subject to military courts. Interference with judicial independence remained common and isolation from regional human rights forums left victims of human rights violation with few avenues to pursue justice. https://www.amnesty.org/en/countries/americas/venezuela/report-venezuela/
wait we aren't allowed to meme anymore you also understand my rhetorical framing very neatly excludes stories like your dads! so congrats! unless his accounting wasn't kosher
