UNC allotted 10,600 tickets for the spring game and they sold out in two hours, wonder if that 2010 number could've been surpassed with no restrictions

also expecting a big turnout with recruits

Doesn't look like Hube's gonna make a play for Aidoo unfortunately, offered Manek out of OU though which would be nice and a fun hate magnet on the team

Assistant scoop to me is pretty meh, I suppose you can't really judge an assistant by his head coaching track record, but Lebo as the one guy with experience isn't all that inspiring imo

Love needs to take a big step forward next year in terms of being able to run the offense. To me his natural fit in the NBA is as a 1 / ball handler but given his current skills the team would probably be better off with him at the 2 if we had a decent 1.

It's just when I watch Ant, I see a guy who's relatively strong on the ball, makes quick decisive decisions, and is probably our quickest guard/best at attacking the rim People can point to his 3 point shooting % but I think that's more due to his inexperience and basically sitting out two years in a row than his form, which is really just a simple, compact motion similar to Berry's and just needs a summer full of reps with maybe a small tweak. You can also add in the benefit of his defensive abilities and contagious energy. Barring another injury I'm really high on the kid, think he's the kind of hard-nosed, physical two you typically see at a place like Kansas.

the whole Caleb/RJ dynamic is the monkey wrench to my scenario though, I hope Caleb's able to become the guy at the 1 because I think RJ's versatility would allow him to basically get starter minutes off the bench backing up the 1/2

    scrimmage report

    Scrimmage Notes

    * UNC’s third open scrimmage wrapped up after 90 minutes at Kenan Stadium on Saturday, as the opening 30 minutes were individual and position drills followed by a full hour of scrimmages pitting the Blues vs. Blues, Whites vs. Whites and Grays vs. Grays. The Tar Heels spent the first five days of spring on base install and then transitioned to new installation of schematic changes/wrinkles the past five days. With install, not competition, being the focus during standard practice/film time, Mack Brown and his coaching staff is using the scrimmages as pure evaluation opportunities. As such, known quantities such as Sam Howell, Jeremiah Gemmel, Brian Anderson, Tomon Fox, Garrett Walston, et al, played minimal, if any, snaps on Saturday.

    * Worth noting that Grayson Atkins has been perfect in all three scrimmages this spring. Connected on kicks of 32, 38 and 40 on Saturday. Redshirt freshman Noah Burnette was also solid, drilling kicks of 32 and 40 yards to earn praise from his head coach.

    * It is true that Ja’Qurious Conley is getting work at safety, although it was the way in which Jay Bateman used his defensive backs that was most interesting. In several possessions with the blue unit, UNC showed a modified 3-3-3 look with three safeties on the back end and an OLB up at the line of scrimmage. Very similar in appearance to what Matt Campbell does at Iowa State, where the back line breaks at the snap so one DB can move around as necessary, whether it be to come up in run support or track a tight end or running back off the LOS. Some in Big 12 country have termed Campbell’s defense as the Air Raid Killer. Don Chapman earned the majority of snaps at nickel (bandit) on Saturday – he also logged time at cornerback last fall – alongside of Trey Morrison and Conley. To highlight the versatility of that scheme, Conley dropped back as deep safety on one play and then came up in run support on the very next play. Chapman told reporters after the scrimmage that all of the DBs are learning different positions this spring.

    * Josh Henderson splashed in last weekend’s scrimmage, although today was a more-rounded performance by the running back room. In fairness, the offensive line opened some massive holes that allowed for big gains, but even so, the backs were solid across the board in running, blocking and receiving out of the backfield. D.J. Jones set the tone early by kicking outside on 3rd-and-4 and plowing over a defensive back for a first down. Caleb Hood played the role of a short-yardage back in an early goal line series, eventually running hard through the middle for a 3-yard score. Jones break through the left side of the line on an inside zone play for a 20-yard pickup and then Hood essentially did the same thing on an outside zone play going the other direction, picking up 25 yards down the left sideline. British Brooks took advantage of a hole on the left side of the line for a 20-yard gain. Ty Chandler had an impressive run on 1st-and-goal at the 5, taking an inside handoff, seeing nothing in front of him and kicking outside right for a walk-in touchdown.

    * While the trench warfare was certainly competitive, I’d have to give the edge to the offensive line, who consistently moved the line of scrimmage forward. The defensive line had a number of quality individual plays, which have been lacking in recent years, so that was refreshing to see. Ritzie and Silver bring explosiveness and quickness that have been lacking in Chapel Hill for too long. Once Brian Hess builds them into strong men, their potential is elite. That’s not to take away from the likes of Kevin Hester, Myles Murphy and Jahlil Taylor, who have all made significant strides this offseason.

    * As good as the offense was throughout the scrimmage, there were too many sloppy plays on critical downs. An illegal shift at the goal negated a touchdown run. A bad snap on 4th-and-goal prevented a scoring opportunity as Drake Maye was dropped on the ensuing scramble. On 4th-and-goal at the 3, a holding call on a tight end forced a field goal attempt. On a 4th-and-10 in the scoring zone, Maye bobbled the snap, scooped it up and got rid of the ball by firing down field and was bailed out on a questionable pass interference call on Dontavius Nash. Maye also connected with J.J. Jones for a 15-yard touchdown pass play, but offensive PI killed the score.

    * Noted a few two-TE sets that did not occur at the goal line. Lots of options in the tight end room, so good opportunity for creative play designs with that group.

    Highlight Plays

    * Jacolby Criswell slips through pressure off the edges and picks up 25 yards on a scramble to his right.
    * Silver and RaRa Dillworth team up to blow up an inside zone run for a tackle for loss.
    * Criswell connects with J.J. Jones for a 25-yard pass play against good coverage.
    * Kristian Varner solo stands up Hood at the line of scrimmage on 2nd-and-goal at the 3.
    * Play of the scrimmage: Sam Howell throws a dime to Emery Simmons on the post for a 40-yard diving touchdown pass against Tony Grimes.
    * Tomon Fox sacks Maye on third down to force a field goal attempt.
    * Not sure how many times weekly in the fall we see a defensive lineman make a great play at the LOS to get into the backfield, only to fail to contain by taking a bad angle or attempting to make a highlight sack. Heady play by Ritzie, who slices through middle of the OL, regains his balance, shows hands high and keeps in front of Criswell without pressing up the field. Without an ability to make Ritzie miss, Criswell has to scramble left before getting rid of the ball.
    * Greene beats DeAndre Hollins down the right sideline into the end zone, but Maye’s throw is a little behind his target and Hollins is able to recover to break up the pass play.
    * Cedric Gray blitzes off right side on 3rd down and no one checks him. He would have blown up the QB in live game action. On the next possession, Chris Collins sacks Maye on 4th-and-14.
    * Gio Biggers read a swing pass correctly on 3rd-and-10, darting up to the line of scrimmage to drop the running back for no gain.
    * Kaimon Rucker comes free up the middle on a stunt and chases Maye out of the pocket, forcing a hot read dump off.
    * Walk-on wide receiver Landon Stevens gets by his defender on a vertical route and makes a diving attempt for a 40-yard strike from Jefferson Boaz, but it’s just off his fingertips. Great extension and quality throw.
    * Boaz threads a pass to Will Crowley over the linebacker and short of the safety for a 15-yard pass play. Tough, but accurate throw. Boaz then connects with Crowley on 3rd-and-long to set up 1st-and-goal. Boaz keeps on the next play for a 5-yard TD run.

    Additional Notes
    by Ross Martin

    * There were many former UNC players from the Larry Fedora era on the sidelines.
    QB Mitch Trubisky
    OG Landon Turner
    TE Jake Bargas
    OT Charlie Heck
    LB Cole Holcomb
    WR Austin Proehl
    QB Nathan Elliott

    * They are in town for former UNC center Lucas Crowley’s wedding. "This place is like heaven on earth,” Bargas told me about getting back to Chapel Hill

    * The offensive line vs. defensive line one-on-ones turned very spirited after redshirt walk on freshman OL Chance Carroll and true freshman defensive lineman Keeshawn Silver got after it a bit past the whistle. Silver added a little late action to the play and was awarded a personal foul from head coach Mack Brown

    * The energy of the OL vs. DL ramped up after that with OL Wisdom Asaboro as the most vocal and demonstrative hype man on the offensive line.

    * Jonathan Adorno stood up his defender, and William Barnes stood up a pass rushing Ethan West. Brian Anderson won a rep handlely as well.

    * True freshman defensive linemen Jahvaree Ritzie and Keeshawn Silver Silver stand out because of their height and length. Before their arrival, UNC did not have anyone on the roster like them from a pure frame standpoint. With that length, Silver made a point to get his hands up in passing lanes when he rushed the quarterback.

    * Mack Brown is like the Voice of God during these practices. He is on the only coach on the loudspeaker microphone and will shout out a few things in between plays, whether it is organization, motivational, or a safety reminder.
“Stir it up! You know what time it is!” Brown said before the scrimmage portion of practice started.
“Compete and take care of each other!” Brown said when warning players of excessive contact during the scrimmage
“Let’s go! We don’t have timeouts! Let’s go!” Brown barked at is offensive coaches int the red zone after they called as timeout to huddle up
    “Earn your right to play!”

    * Watching UNC Strength & conditioning coach Brian Hess during the scrimmage can be very entertaining. He prowls the sideline and his main role seems to be yelling random tings to hype up the team and to keep the sideline clear. He was also very active during the OL vs DL one-on-ones, once again mostly as a hype man.

    * Ty Chandler was the running back for the first team and Sam Howell, while Josh Henderson wad the running back for second team and Jacobly Criswell

    * A few standout plays:
    - Tight end Garrett Walston caught a pass across the middle and trucked linebacker Khadry Jackson. “I thought we were playing thud!?” Came from the defensive sideline in reference to Walston’s big hit
    - Kaimon Rucker was disruptive all scrimmage and had a big TFL on Ty Chandler in the backfield
    - Josh Downs had a big catch across the middle from Sam Howell, which created an eruption from the offensive bench.
    - True Freshman RaRa Dillworth and Keeshawn Silver combined for a TFL on Josh Henderson
    - Jacolby Criswell hit J.J. Jones in the right corner of the end zone for a touchdown
    - Sam Howell hit Emery Simmons with a perfect deep ball on a rope at the back of the end zone. The ball was thrown perfectly and fell right into Simmons's bread basket, he barely got one foot in before stepping out of the back of the end zone.
    - Howell and Criswell got the first few possessions, but Drake Maye played a lot near the end and Jefferson Boaz got in for 1-2 possessions at the tail end of the scrimmage. When Boaz ran it in for a touchdown, Howell was the first to celebrate with him in the end zone.

10 guys who seemingly made the biggest jumps this spring

    RB TY CHANDLER
Ty Chandler was brought in from Tennessee to provide experience to a running back group that lost two of the best running backs UNC has ever had. Although Brown wants more clarity from his backs with whom he can trust and put in the two- or three-back rotation, there isn’t a question that Chandler is going to be one of those guys.

Ty Chandler's really fast,” Brown said. “You can tell he's played in the Alabama game, the Florida game, the Georgia game, he's played against Auburn, he's played in a lot of games. So he's not going to get the big eyes when he walks out on the field for the first time. And he can catch. He's fast. He's about 209 pounds. So I'm really, really glad that he's here.”

Brown also mentioned a moment in a scrimmage this spring when Chandler perfectly picked up a blitz. That experience and awareness is something young running backs usually don't have and will give Chandler a leg up in the running back room.

In four years at Tennessee, Chandler rushed 421 times for 2,046 yards (4.9 avg) and 13 touchdowns. He caught 58 passes for 465 yards and three touchdowns. His season-high in yards came during his junior year when he rushed for 655 yards on 135 carries (4.9 avg).

    WR ANTOINE GREEN
Antoine Green came to UNC as a highly-touted four-star prospect out of Rockledge, Fla., but because of injuries and slow development, has never fully tapped into his potential. This season may be the year Green shows off his talents to the ACC and the nation.

“I thought Antoine Green had his best day today,” Brown said just before the first scrimmage of the spring. In that first scrimmage, Green showed his potential on the outside to be a receiver UNC goes to alongside Beau Corrales and Khafre Brown.

He’s also a veteran among some young, inexperienced receivers, who will be expected to lead those guys and be a catalyst to create depth.

    WR JOSH DOWNS
In the final days leading up to the spring game, there still has yet to be a lot of separation by the wide receiver corps after the departure of Dyami Brown and Dazz Newsome. One guy that has separated himself from the pack, however, and made a name for himself as UNC’s No. 1 guy is sophomore Josh Downs.

Josh Downs looks great,” Mack Brown said after UNC’s fourth practice of spring ball. “He doesn't look good. He's our best receiver at this point.”

After 12 spring practices, that notion of the 5-foot-10 slot receiver being the Tar Heels’ best receiver remains true. He’s an every-down guy who can be utilized in quick slants and out routes but can also be sent over the middle for a deep post to attack holes in a defense’s zone. Downs also possesses the speed to be used as a runner out of the backfield in a full house formation or can be sent in motion out of the slot.

    OL WILLIAM BARNES
The one name on North Carolina's offensive line mentioned the most this spring by head coach Mack Brown and UNC players has been redshirt junior William Barnes. Barnes is not slotted in as a starter, but along with Quiron Johnson, Barnes has been part of the core rotation up front for the Tar Heels. He is working in at guard and tackle behind Marcus McKethan and Jordan Tucker. Barnes not only provides UNC with depth at those positions, but could become a starter in 2022.

The key for Barnes to be able to step into a rotational role has been getting and keeping his weight down, while also becoming more consistent with what offensive line coach Stacy Searels needs from him.

"He's been one of the biggest surprises and most exciting players right now for us moving forward this spring,” Mack Brown said last week. “And I'm happy for him. He's a great student. He's a great young man, he was very highly recruited. Everybody always asked, ‘Why didn't he play? Why aren't you playing?' ...The light comes on at different times for different people. And I really think it's his time to step up and play. And then he would be in a great position to step up and take either Jordan Tucker's place or Marcus McKethan’s if they decide to go the NFL in another year.”

Offensive line depth has been an issue for UNC over the last two seasons. In Brown's third year, Carolina should be able to play and trust at least eight offensive linemen. Barnes's development this spring is a big reason for that.

    LB EUGENE ASANTE
Eugene Asante became a standout player before spring practice even started. He was asked to replace Chazz Surratt in the Orange Bowl after Surratt opted out in order to focus on the NFL Draft. Asante shined and showed his athleticism, physicality and speed. This spring, he continued to put his skills on display while emerging to help replace Surratt’s leadership in the middle of the defense.

“It's not even that he's carrying himself (differently),” fellow linebacker Jeremiah Gemmel said. “I think the guys on the team now just understand. I mean, it wasn't from just playing the Texas A&M game. Eugene started on all four special teams for us. He showed up every single week on special teams. So the team was comfortable, they were confident, they knew he was gonna play his role and be in his spot. And I think he just took the extra step by stepping into the role.”

Brown has said that Asante and Gemmel are solidified as the starters at inside linebacker. What the Hall of Fame head coach has been observing is who is going to fill in behind them to help provide depth in the two-deep. Asante has stood out this spring and earned his starting spot.

    NB DON CHAPMAN
Chapman started 11 games at safety for North Carolina last season, was fourth on the team with 48 tackles, and added four tackles for loss, two sacks, two pass breakups, and one interception. But the significant news out of the spring practice is Chapman's move from safety to nickleback. UNC defensive coordinator Jay Bateman likes to cross-train a lot of his defensive backs for multiple positions, so the move is not necessarily permanent, but certainly an intriguing development for Carolina's secondary.

"We want to get the best 11 on the field," Brown told the media on Tuesday. "... Jay and I are working really hard to find out what the best position for each of these guys is. We've played okay at safety, we haven't played great, so Ja'Qurious Conley is a tremendous athlete and Don Chapman is really savvy and he is tough and he has really responded well to nickel and Conley has done really well at safety over the last week... We are not looking at schemes right now as much as we are looking at personnel."

A source told Inside Carolina that in UNC's secondary it is Chapman who has stood out the most while making the transition to learning nickleback this spring. Positional versatility is nothing new to Chapman. While most of his snaps came at free safety in 2020, he played double-digit snaps at slot corner (nickleback) and in the box during multiple games last season, according to Pro Football Focus.

"I am just trying to get on the field and make plays," Chapman said about moving around in the secondary, "... the biggest thing is learning the blitzes. I am not used to blitzing as much and we do that with the nickel position quite a few times."

    DE/OLB DES EVANS
Arriving at North Carolina as a high 247Sports Composite four-star prospect with a raw frame and seemingly endless potential, Evans is a player expected to step into a much bigger role in 2021. Evans appeared in 10 games in 2020 and made three starts on the defensive line. He finished with 10 tackles, two tackles for a loss, one sack, one forced fumble and one quarterback hurry in his true freshman season.

"Des Evans can stop the run and he is a good pass rusher, so he can stay in there all the time," Brown said on Tuesday.

Playing alongside veterans Tomon Fox, Tyrone Hopper, and Chris Collins, and fellow rising sophomore Kaimon Rucker, UNC's outside linebacker/defensive end room is one of the most talented and deep rooms on the team. Evans will get his chances in 2021 and is poised for a breakout year as Carolina continues to prioritize and seek elite pass rushers.

    OLB/DE KAIMON RUCKER
At the beginning of the spring, the Hall of Fame head coach challenged his defensive line to create pressure without a defensive scheme. He said he wanted guys who can line up and win their one-on-one battle with an offensive lineman. It’s obvious that Kaimon Rucker is one of those guys.

Kaimon Rucker has really had an outstanding spring,” Brown said on Tuesday. “Jeremiah (Gemmel) just called him out as a guy that stepped up this spring a few minutes ago to the team.”

Offensive lineman Asim Richards added: “He may be a little bit smaller, but he's strong and fast. So when you have that, you can play with anybody. He's just a really good player.”

Rucker, at 6-foot-1, 265 pounds, is a hybrid player getting work at defensive end and outside linebacker. Regardless of where defensive coordinator Jay Bateman lines him up, he’s going to be a factor.

    DL KEVIN HESTER
When listing UNC's starting group of defensive linemen heading into Saturday's spring game, Brown said it would be Raymond Vohasek, Myles Murphy, and Kevin Hester.

"Probably the guy that's improved the most in that interior is Kevin Hester," Brown said on Tuesday. "He sprained his ankle a little bit, four or five days ago. He's fought through it. He's still been practicing. I think he'll play on Saturday. But he's 6-foot-5, 305-pounds, 310-pounds and is really moving well."

"K.J. Hester has been a guy who is doing things a little bit different (this spring)," UNC defensive back Don Chapman said last week. "You just notice him more when he is on the field. Last year he was more quiet and now he is more aggressive. You see that aggression and physical nature that he brings to the defense. I really like that."

A basketball player in high school, Hester only played one season of high school football before he arrived at UNC. So there is a sense that Hester is just beginning to scrape the surface of his potential on the defensive line. "I have been looking to improve my consistency since I didn't have a lot of experience coming out of high school," Hester told the media last week.

    DL MYLES MURPHY
With Tomari Fox out for the spring, rising sophomore defensive lineman Myles Murphy has played himself into a starting role along UNC's defensive front. Murphy was mentioned by Brown along with Raymond Vohasek and Kevin Hester as UNC's current starting trio of linemen.

"Myles Murphy dominated the practice this morning," Brown said on Tuesday. "He was all over the place. I haven't seen a guy dominate a practice like that. When you call out names, I just kept saying 88, 88 and 88, so whatever he ate for breakfast, we need to make sure that we find out what it was and get him to do it before."

Murphy, a 6-foot-4, 305-pound Greensboro native, played in all 12 games in 2020, earning valuable reps as a reserve defensive lineman. He finished the season with eight tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and one quarterback hurry. Murphy not only provides key depth and a valuable piece up front, but is poised for a breakout season in just year two at Carolina.
