Water was high in surrounding rivers and bayous around lunch today. High tide in south MS is 2 to 4 am. Still raining hard and heavy winds from south will continue to push water up. Wont be as bad as west of here, but plenty of people going to get flooded homes over night here
Apartment complex fire in Kenner LA. Looks to be a fairly large complex. No telling if first responders can even get there or not
Got hard to sleep through the night when the wind picked up in central Mississippi and start pelting rain against the house. Looks like the remnant of the eye rolls over me around 9:30 this morning. My neighborhood was one of the only ones to not lose power when the ice storm hit in February so I’m hoping I’m as lucky today. How’s everyone else fairing.
Yep EN Revision Text: NOTIFICATION OF UNUSUAL EVENT DUE TO LOSS OF OFFSITE POWER Waterford 3 shut down the reactor in preparation for Hurricane Ida landfall prior to this event. At 1812 CDT, Waterford 3 declared a notification of unusual event under EAL S.U. 1.1 due to a loss of offsite power as a result of hurricane Ida. Plant power is being provided via emergency diesel generators. The NRC Activated at 2016 EDT with Region IV in the lead. But also on the page Spoiler The following information was received from the state of North Carolina via email: "A licensee reported a medical event involving a patient treated for prostate cancer. The treatment included implanting 54 iodine-125 brachytherapy seeds, containing a total activity of 1.012986 GBq (27.378 mCi), in the patient's prostate for a prescribed therapeutic radiation dose of 14500 cGy (rad). The seeds were implanted on 7/26/21. On 8/17/21, the patient's follow up implant CT scan revealed that all 54 seeds were implanted in the penile bulb, outside of the intended target. An inspector was dispatched on 8/18/21. The patient and physician were notified. Through subsequent interviews with the Medical Physicist involved, the Radiation Safety Officer, and the Chief Physicist, malfunction of the ultrasound unit was ruled out. A discussion evolved during review of the ultrasound images from the procedure where a foley catheter inserted in the patient appeared partially visible marking the location of the bladder. The physicist's retrospective review indicates that if the foley catheter is not clearly visible then it could result in seed implantation in a patient's anatomy other than the prostate. "An unintended dose to the penile bulb of approximately 14500 cGy (rad) was received, where no dose was anticipated. "Currently, the cause appears to be human error and our investigation is ongoing. Pending corrective actions include changes to the prostate brachytherapy protocol to incorporate an additional step to ensure personnel clearly identify the prostate gland and the surrounding anatomy. Previous cases involving this type of procedure do not indicate that this error has been occurring, unaccounted for, prior to this event, due to the follow-up CT scans performed post-op per the licensee's internal procedures."
This is how I imagine the OR that day. “Bill, are you sure that is the prostate, it looks an awful lot like a penis?” “Excuse me, I went to 10+ years of school, so I would appreciate it if you called me Dr Doctor. And if I want a consult from a scrub nurse I will ask for it.” “You got it Dr Doctor [scrub nurse slowly backs away from operating table].”
At least the west side of the storm is dying out. Should make it easier to get help to these affected areas quicker.
Some early reports I am seeing on TWC are downplaying the damage and have people excited it is not as bad as what they were expecting.
It is the areas that no one can get to that I would be worried about. If I remember correctly they had people in the city proper, Morgan City, and Baton Rougue. The area inside that triangle looked to take the worst of the worst based on reports.
Sounds like I may not be able to go back for a week. This is when mold starts forming because it’s so hot plus the walls are wet. I put all of my freezer items in a garbage bag before I left but that’s going to be one horrid smell. My landlords told me they’re out of then until after Labor Day and I’m like dude you need to check on your house.
Right now all the New Orleans tv stations are streaming. I will dig around the corners of the internet to see if I can find anything else of interest. Fox - https://www.fox8live.com/livestream/ NBC - https://www.wdsu.com/nowcast CBS - https://www.wwltv.com/watch?vid=55f478f0-ee91-4ae0-93bc-cf71382c125d ABC - https://wgno.com/on-air/live-streaming/
Looks like Hattiesburg got a lot of rain. Not sure if there was anymore chaos overnight but I crashed at like 12:30
Very little live stuff at the moment. One web cam south of New Orleans in Marrero that is active. It does not show any damage.
Still tropical storm weather at my house. Shits been lasting forever. Im 3 miles north of the Gulf so it’s expected
I’ve rode out worse for my area, but can’t ever remember tropical or hurricane type conditions lasting this long. Thankful this thing wasn’t worse for us and I can’t imagine how scary it was for those west of here. I’ll be in LA somewhere probably starting in the next day or two most likely giving out ice, water and passing out meals. Not sure where they will send to me volunteer yet. Have a feeling we will also be going back next week some as well
Just really bad rain in Ocean Springs , MS. We didn't lose power. Probably had wind gusts of 40mph?? Trees were shaking pretty bad.
I'm sure my rotary club will be giving $ gift cards etc . We did this for the Hurricane that crushed Florida panhandle a few years back.
Yeah. Think we got around 60 here throughout the early evening into the late night. Still getting some 30 to 40 gust and tons of rain.
I guess all the fishing camps in Grand Isle will be making insurance claims and get new camps over the next few years.
Pretty cool organization I have a couple buddies that work with. They set up feed tons of people after disasters https://operationbbqrelief.org/
Another wasted name but Tropical Storm Kate has been declared in the Atlantic. No impact to land at all.
We were supposed to be going to NOLA for our anniversary this week through Monday. About to cancel hotel reservations This trip was our plan B to the San Diego trip i originally had planned (my work trip got cancelled due to covid concerns). Last year was our 10th anniversary and we canceled plans to travel because of covid last year, too. Fuck!
Doubt it. The grid is down, so I can't see power going through the line. Plus, those lines would have the ultimate ground with the Mississippi.
they're almost certainly not insulated. If they arc or there's power transmitted between +/- it trips shut offs
This comment is w/in context of a top level Cat 4, but it doesn't seem like the damage has been that bad. Maybe it's still early and not too many pictures available yet. I've been scrolling and looking for them. No power for a long period of time seems like it might be one of the worst aspects. Those towers and running a wire across the Mississippi don't seem like a quick fix
