Was supposed to have left at 5 this morning with BIL for a weekend in Everglades fishing and camping while SIL and their kid stayed with my wife and little one Their kid got strep yesterday and our daughter woke up at 3am with 101 fever Wtf
Been at Hatteras for about a week. Fishing very slow. Wind is blowing 40mph today. Yesterday 6oz wasn't enough to hold the bottom. Hoping it clears up and dies down some for Saturday. Heading home Sunday a.m.
Thinking about trailering the boat to NOLA tomorrow to stay with a friend and then we'll fish out of Shell Beach or Hopedale all day Sunday.
Decided to put the boat out today. Between the 2 of us we caught 3 largemouth. It was so slow. Was nice to sit in the sun after the gloomy, rainy week we've had. Got a monster hit, assuming another catfish but it got under the boat and broke me off.
Trailered the boat to NOLA last night. Stayed at a friends house and then we hit Hopedale this morning and fished all day. Went way up into the marsh.
'Twas beautiful on the Outer Banks last week, but fishing was terrible. Water temps still 73, so the bait wasn't moving. Think I saw less than 10 fish caught all week. Consolation prize was eating fresh seafood every day. Better luck to anyone headed that way soon.
Any recs on good looking polarized sunglasses that are great for fishing? My Maui Jims have a scratch and I don't love the way they look. Everyone seems to have those or Raybans or Costas.
Costa’s customer service sucks now that they were bought out. Rheos has similar styles, they float, and they’re like $70 and basically free if they need to be replaced. I keep a pair on my boat for site fishing.
70s and winds only 10-15 tmw. Spent far too much money on lures today. Taking the oldest boy and hoping we wear em out.
Drum (redfish to our southern contingent) are the big draw in the fall. This time of year you'll also have Spanish mackerel, trout, and bluefish running. I got option E. None of the above. Couple lizard fish and mullet.
Went to Asheville last weekend and the foliage was as pretty as I’ve ever seen in the south. Love your trip report as always.
Specks. Guy next to me caught one. Big cold front/storms in Eastern NC this weekend. I expect fishing will pick up in the next week or two. I'm giving some serious thought to staying soundfront next year. Just to try it. Fishing could be better? I dunno. Be nice to have a boat.
Nor’easter came though this weekend along with king tide. Most places where flooded at high tide. I went out today at high tide with 18 mph wind. It kinda sucked at first but managed to get the inshore slam. 3 reds, 2 flounder, and a trout. Low tide today was about what high tide typically is. There was so much water in everywhere.
Had to go to Missouri for work, so I took the fly rod and tried a few streams today. Had a few other trout get off since I didn't bring the net.
I grew up 10 minutes from Joplin. Might have to check it out next time I'm home! What were they biting on?
A buddy of mine has been on 2 guided fly fishing trips and wants to get his own setup. He asked about the Orvis Encounter (I own an Encounter setup) but honestly I wasn't very happy with it. The drag is pretty shit. Anyone have any recommendations in that general price range? billdozer High Cotton Iron Mickey
I always advise people to splash a little extra on the rod and line when purchasing a first setup. Assuming he’s wanting something like a 5wt all around setup for trout and warm water species, a nice reel isn’t really needed at all. The extra money put towards a quality rod and nicer line will improve casting, mending, etc. and generally make things more enjoyable.
i haven't caught much of anything that required drag. love my 4wt redington zero and my 6/7wt echo base.
When I first got into fly fishing I mad the mistake of putting more money into the reel than the rod. If you're building a setup, put at least 2/3 of your money in the rod. The extra money in the rod will payoff.
Yeah just a nice all around setup. Probably a 5-6wt 9 footer. Hmm. I rely on drag a lot. Maybe I'm in the minority there idk.
yeah Rod Line Reel imo At that price point the Orvis is a fine rig. I’d tell him to look at Maxxon and Reddington as well. But above all I’d find a shop where he can throw them. My wife likes a slow action and bought a Reddington. I like fast and bought a Douglas.
