the big time jobs usually want HC experience but when you refuse to entertain a job like auburn, you really limit yourself. Maybe they become candidates at UF or LSU once we see where Napier ends up. Napier at UF could mean aranda at lsu but maybe venables becomes attractive to them. Elliott would likely need to take a lesser job. If collins has a bad year again next year and gets fired, I think GT is a great fit for Elliott. He will benefit by not being the coach who has to transition them out of the triple option
I think mark stoops deserves more looks for the top tier jobs than he gets. He has hired some really good staffs and recruits and develops at a really high level for UK. More confident in him scaling up than a matt campbell.
but also, what real incentive is there to leave Kentucky? He makes $5.25m a year to be a god for winning 8 games. not all coaches "don't get looks." some just realize they've got a good thing going.
Mark Stoops has been at UK for nine years. He's finished in the top 25 once, hasn't been fired, and is probably going to get a raise from that $5.25M per he's making because of his accomplishments. Dan Mullen was at UF for four years. He finished his first three seasons ranked as high as 6, 6 and 12 in the polls, and won the SEC East in year three. He got fired before the end of year four. I'm not in a hurry to go chase that vacancy if I'm Mark Stoops.
Maybe, but wouldn’t A&M promote Elko? If it can be promised that A&M does a proper search, I can get behind Jimbo to LSU.
There are certainly coaches who feel the need to test themselves at one of those high pressure schools that give you a chance to win a national championship. But we shouldn't assume a guy isn't getting looks because they're happy to stack millions of dollars and not face the "win 10 games every year or you're toast" stuff. I find the guys who stay at mid-tier places for a long time and win above what the program really is refreshing, honestly.
With their pending move to the SEC, they're now contractually obligated to hire only former Saban assistants
Always fun when schools think they’re going to get someone tight and then hire a coordinator or a dude from the fun belt
Zero doubt campbell is entrenched in ohio and embraces recruiting. The concern is he gets a big time midwest job, brings all of his assistants then suddenly can get a bunch of 2nd tier and third tier ohio kids early hes never dreamed of getting and is content with his classes being that. Maybe he would be better off outside the midwest just so there wasnt the chance he was content to take classes like that. He literally has zero high level recruiting experience in his career and by all accounts is insanely tied to his staff who has no high level recruiting history. Theres just MAJOR recruiting concerns with him.
The Campbell/Ohio thing is overplayed. Including this class, he's taken 9 kids from Ohio in the last 5 years. Maybe that would be more if he were at a more desirable location, but it's not like he's just running around Ohio looking for anyone willing to go to ISU.
This is exactly what folks said when OSU hired Tressel, or when Brian Kelly made the jump from Grand Valley State to UC to ND. I tend to think a guy who is a good recruiter stays a good recruiter once his platform becomes higher.
I believe he recruits Florida a lot too, same concern there though. We somewhat saw this play out with Rrod at um.
Is Lashlee good? I remember Godfrey saying UCF fucked up hiring Gus over him but that seems unlikely to be a good take.
Sure, but you can say that about anyone with Campbell's resume. And a lot of guys who are known as better recruiters don't have a coaching resume as good as Campbell's. Every candidate has flaws. There's no reason Campbell can't do really well at USC or LSU or wherever. He's just never been at that a program anywhere near that level so we don't know how he'd do it. Just comes down to what you want to bank on in terms of the knowns and unknowns.
I think he’s good. He’s stubborn on running the ball with our OL that’s not great at run blocking. Some short yardage calls baffle me. But I think he’s a good coach. Players like him.
from the Extra Points newsletter/podcast: There's a lot that goes into hiring a football coach, or a women's soccer coach, or any sort of college coach. Increasingly, that process involves a search firm. It's easy to lob jokes at search firms, especially for elite college football jobs. How hard could it be to come up with a list of potential candidates for the USC or LSU job, right? Those schools have HR departments, they know how to run background checks and conduct interviews. Why bring in a third party? Prior to becoming a sportswriter, I even worked in the staffing industry, both as an in-house corporate recruiter, and in third-party search...and based on the work I used to do and was familiar with, I couldn't use a use for a lot of search firms either...or at least, I didn't early in my sportswriting career. Some of those jokes are still justified, in my humble opinion, but the actual nuts and bolts process of hiring a coach, or an AD, or other senior staffers, is more complicated than Twitter makes it out to be sometimes. To help better understand what these companies actually do, for our latest episode of Going For Two, we decided to bring in a person who runs a search firm, Kyle Bowlsby, of Bowlsby Sports Advisors. In this podcast episode, we discuss: How one actually gets into the college search firm world. What sorts of services, beyond candidate lists, a search firm actually provides. How a search firm figures out what candidates to recommend, especially for more niche sports, like college soccer. What role search firms need to play in improving diversity in college athletics coaching and administration. What changes he'd like to see in the hiring process of college coaches. The weirdest things he's seen in contracts. What a search firm does if the school has unrealistic expectations about a search. And much, much more. Going For Two is the free podcast of Extra Points, which drops every Wednesday. You can find it via Apple Podcasts, Spotify, the Varsity Podcast Network, and wherever else you get your podcasts.
lol and people think Manny has a chance to comeback when he's about to lose his OC and DC smh. You'll be hard pressed to find a OC who runs a better double reverse pass to the TE better than he does.
I listened to one of these in the off season in regards to cbb coaching searches and it was pretty embarrassing for the search firm, especially in regards to how they find and recommend coaches for jobs.
