IYAM, which you probably shouldn't, a 70% reduction in hosp admission rates seems like quit a bit to attribute entirely to a non-naive population.

Edit: put the article in the spoiler.
Within weeks, scientists at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research expect to announce that they have developed a vaccine that protects people from COVID-19 and all its variants, even Omicron, as well as from previous SARS-origin viruses that have killed millions of people worldwide.

The achievement is the result of almost two years of work on the virus. The Army lab received its first DNA sequencing of the COVID-19 virus in early 2020. Very early on, Walter Reed’s infectious diseases branch decided to focus on making a vaccine that would work against not just the existing strain but all of its potential variants as well.

Walter Reed’s Spike Ferritin Nanoparticle COVID-19 vaccine, or SpFN, completed animal trials earlier this year with positive results. Phase 1 of human trials, which tested the vaccine against Omicron and the other variants, wrapped up this month, again with positive results that are undergoing final review, Dr. Kayvon Modjarrad, director of Walter Reed’s infectious diseases branch, said in an exclusive interview with Defense One.

Unlike existing vaccines, Walter Reed’s SpFN uses a soccer ball-shaped protein with 24 faces for its vaccine, which allows scientists to attach the spikes of multiple coronavirus strains on different faces of the protein.

“It's very exciting to get to this point for our entire team and I think for the entire Army as well,” Modjarrad said.

The vaccine’s human trials took longer than expected, he said, because the lab needed to test the vaccine on subjects who had neither been vaccinated nor previously infected with COVID. The rapid spread of the Delta and Omicron variants made that difficult.

“With Omicron, there's no way really to escape this virus. You're not going to be able to avoid it. So I think pretty soon either the whole world will be vaccinated or have been infected,” Modjarrad said.

The next step is seeing how the new pan-coronavirus vaccine interacts with people who were previously vaccinated or previously sick. Walter Reed will be hiring a yet-to-be-named industry partner for that wider rollout.

“We need to evaluate it in the real-world setting and try to understand how does the vaccine perform in much larger numbers of individuals who have already been vaccinated with something else initially…or already been sick,” Modjarrad said, adding that the new vaccine will still need to undergo phase 2 and phase 3 trials.

He said nearly all of Walter Reed’s 2,500 researchers have had some role in the vaccine’s nearly-two-year development.

“We decided to take a look at the long game rather than just only focusing on the original emergence of SARS, and instead understand that viruses mutate, there will be variants that emerge, future viruses that may emerge in terms of new species. Our platform and approach will equip people to be prepared for that.”

It would be awesome if you could get a test at CVS. Where I live, they’ve been out of rapid test stock for a month, and you can’t get an appointment for pcr until January.

what? I was honestly wondering. If you can’t taste it seems like it wouldn’t matter what you eat. It seems like you would just try and eat bland foods.

Most patients see it come back within a couple weeks. Some it takes several months. Some still haven't had it come back 1-2 years into this, but it's a small minority.

P much zero evidence based treatments for it. One thing we sometimes do for patients who acquire anosmia from any number causes is "smell therapy." It might be the only rational use for essential oils in all of medicine, and wouldn't exactly say there's good evidence in any context. But hey, you're not gonna hurt anything by sniffing some pungent stuff several times per day.

Just google anosmia smell therapy. Don't do anything dumb like industrial solvents or spray paint like your fan of section might lead you to do. Just some lavender, lemon and idk stuff like that.

Sweet tastes came back quickly, so it became kinda basic sweet stuff for a while with no frills. Sharpish-tastes like onion and garlic, which apparently are way most complex than is realized, tasted like rotting meat. Anything with any sort of artificial sweetener was like burnt plastic.

Strangely, pairing acidic foods with the garlic and onion made then fine.

We had a National Guard testing site open in downtown Cleveland at 9am today, was supposed to be open until 5 pm, but closed the line at 12 as they were completely overwhelmed. We’re getting slammed with this wave, and the disastrous testing situation is compounding the problem.

Glad the gov’t is sending tests next month, certainly wouldn’t want to expedite that or anything

If you look like with like though on SA you see that Omicron has not been nearly as severe as other peaks. SA at peak had a trailing 7 day average of 575 deaths per day in past waves but it is 43 as of yesterday.

We boosted the equivalent of 3% of adults yesterday or 2% of the overall population and a US equivalent of 6.8m daily doses. On track to have half of adults boosted by Christmas Day which will put us in a good position for the New Year.

Omicron is also dominant here for 10 days and hospitalisations continue to fall.
