I have little doubt that you will be right about that. I mean, I can see the pure talent there - it's just that he's so small! He makes Rey Mysterio look like a giant.
Incidentally, I posted before that I wasn't sure Jericho was the best choice for AEW's first champion but now I'm not so sure - it's just that he's so far past his prime nowadays and he looked sloooow against Page. Was there a better choice back then (Aug 2019)? Would giving it to Cody have been too 'on the nose'? Did they miss out with Kenny? I'm very curious what you guys think.
Jericho was the only choice cause they were trying to establish AEW to a wider fan base than just the hardcores that were already watching for Kenny and the Bucks. Chris did a lot for AEW early on. His segments drew and he elevated people.
Jericho is one of the greatest ever to do it. If you have him, you put the belt on him. Kahn made the right call there. Having him face Hangman for the title was all about long term planning, as they pegged Hangman as the guy to build up (and boy did they)
I will say Kenny and the Bucks were a little too selfless early or worried about the shit they'd get for winning, glad TK took over to start 2020 like nah, you boys winning things now.
Speaking of which, I believe they are going to set up Hangman/Jericho for DON so Hangman can get that win back.
I hope you're wrong, talk about unncecessary in 2022 with a loaded roster. Would anyone even care Hangman lost to Jericho 3 years ago? lol
Jericho is getting heated up for something big, and when it comes to setting up Page’s next challenger, it makes sense to make it the guy that beat him for the title once already.
I've always thought that MJF would take the title at DoN, but maybe they want to extend Hangman a bit. I do still believe that MJF will be the next champ, but my timing might be off.
I thought so too, but I wonder if they hold off to allow for MJF and Wardlow to have their first match at DON. I kind of think Page should get wins over Punk and Jericho before the loses the belt. Page/Punk headlining DON night make the most sense, but you could still get Page/Jericho on Dynamite prior to that.
Could see this. MJF cost Wardlow next week. Has to go through Spears first stretch that thing out a bit. Could see Spears costing Wardlow and MJF playing the injured card as well to stretch it out.
I'm interested to see if FTR dropping Tully amounts to anything or if that is going to play into the strife within Pinnacle.
They're calling it the Jericho Appreciation Society. Super arrogant, ego manic Jericho should be fun. Hopefully Garcia gets elevated like the Inner Circle did for Sammy.
MJF losing to Wardlow at DON, then beating Hangman at All Out, then facing Wardlow at Full Gear for the title seems like good, solid booking, but that's dependent on Wardlow continuing to stay hot after finally breaking away from MJF. Turning on a douchebag heel like MJF is not nearly as challenging as remaining over when you're out on your own. Will he be Batista or one of The Miz' many lackies? That's the question.
Making him go through the top guy first? Wardlow is 100% losing next week and watching him eventually destroy MJF will be glorious.
So I don't know if people caught it, but during his promo when he got choked up talking about his personal issues and how they limited him, how DB is the wrestler he should be, and how Tony Schiavone helped him greatly, Regal mentioned he isn't long for this world. Apparently he did an interview for Talk is Jericho and he has some pretty serious health issues that he detailed in that interview. Hoping he doesn't have some kind of terminal diagnosis.
I didn't see the interview but the way he was talking about drinking I was wondering if he had liver disease or something.
I don't think they've released it yet, I just saw someone one Tik Tok who found a tweet saying they'd recorded for TIJ because his wife asked him why the guy was talking like he had a terminal diagnosis so it made him look online to see if something was up.
Looks like Briscoes are likely never coming to AEW and a Briscoes vs. FTR match anywhere is not exactly likely https://wrestlingnews.co/aew-news/warnermedia-does-not-want-the-briscoes-in-aew/
Finally ran out of steam and fell asleep halfway through Full Gear 2019 last night - these 4 hour PPVs can be hard work! Hangman vs PAC will be hard to beat, though - probably the best AEW singles match I've seen so far. Plan to finish and comment later tonight...
Try a five-hour PPV, including the buy in matches, that we had this past Sunday when you have to be in at work at 7 am the next day.
It's ok. It pays the bills, the benefits are generally pretty good, I get half day Fridays along with no night and weekend work, and once I leave work the work stays at work.
Yeah, the first DON I watched Tues night was about 5 hours in total but I was amazed how comfortably I blew through it. Must have been all that great wrestling, as opposed to the BS that seems to be dominating their competitor's product right now. And yeah, sorry (not sorry) - that IS another slam on WWE but it's true. I used to buy every one of their PPVs on DVD every month, up until last year when I felt like I was just wasting my time and I scaled it back to the big 4. That said, I still haven't picked up Survivor Series yet, and I'm not exactly excited by the thought of RR2022 after what I've read here. Pound for pound, it's no contest. AEW is easily the superior brand right now.
4 and 5 hour shows are brutal. Its not a AEW problem because both companies do it. But fuck that. NXT had it right... 5 matches around 3 hours and out. AEW could've skipped all the preshow shit and cut three matches off the main card and I would've walked away way more pumped from that show. I really hope Mania isn't two 4+ hour shows because that defeats the purpose of splitting over two nights.
I'm a 50 year old Aussie with no home internet... And a mad collector, too - going to the local store & picking up $100 of DVDs on a sale is fun for me.
