I’m not sure I agree. Think the perception is shifted by the piss poor interior OL options available last spring forcing him into first team reps. He was always a “country strong” dude who was able to just overwhelm people with his power so there was a lot of development to be had. Think the guy has the potential to be really good—even Q took a couple of years to get there.

I’m hanging out with my best friend tonight who went to high school with me and then went to OSU (my whole family is Buckeyes but me). We are drinking and hanging out talking about how great it’s gonna be seeing OSU-ND together this year and next year together. My parents are coming down, weekend in Columbus, etc

    God I love football

I was a student in 1995-96 when we last did a home and home. 1995 was one of the best game day atmospheres I ever experienced at OSU.

Great weather, lots of fans for both teams, everyone generally getting along.

Much different vibe than the big conference games, where there is more animosity. Other schools that have been big nonconference games generally didn’t travel as well—Texas, USC, etc.

I expect a lot of ND fans at this one.

My gf at the time (now wife) and I had numerous very bad experiences with OSU fans that day, though not from the OSU friends we were with. A few were extreme, including random spitting, unprovoked profanities, and one drunken hilljack in particular that threw some pretty lewd comments at my gf. It's probably a good thing my friends restrained me, because the vibe of the crowd around us was that had I retaliated, I was in trouble. It took the Buckeye fans of TMB, your knowledge of good lunch places and skills in finding good booty pics to help me learn to trust again.

Eliminating the open container free for all in the early 2000’s has helped that problem. Until 2003 or so, we had 50,000 or so showing up to campus on top of the 105,000 with tickets, just looking to get piss drunk on Lane Avenue.

In 1995, I did a tailgate at Tuttle Park and we had a ton of ND fans in and around us. I didn’t go into the fray on Lane.

2002 OSU-Michigan was the tipping point. Cops estimated 75,000 outside the game while the game was being played. The 7/11 on Lane Avenue had a semitrailer beer truck parked next to it, just wheeling in cases all morning.

It was fantastic but also appalling. You couldn’t walk without stepping on a beer can. Campus Parters and the city but an end to open container, for good reason.

    Gold Standard

Notre Dame had another batch of notable visitors over the weekend, headlined by a potential late 2022 running back addition, two four-star 2023 offensive lineman and an elite 2024 quarterback. BlueandGold.com recruiting insider Mike Singer shares what he’s hearing coming out of the weekend.

*** Cincinnati La Salle class of 2022 running back Gi’Bran Payne officially visited Kentucky early last week before spending the weekend at Notre Dame. In my visitor preview article from last week, I wrote that I’d be surprised if Payne didn’t end up choosing the Irish. And coming out of the weekend, I feel the same. To be honest, there’s not even much else to add here.

When Payne received his release from his Indiana letter of intent, the sense I got was that it would be a foregone conclusion that he’d end up choosing Notre Dame. Between Deland McCullough, Marcus Freeman, Chad Bowden and Jeremy Larkin, his connections on the Irish staff are just way too strong. We’ll see if Payne takes any additional visits before choosing, but I still believe it’ll end up being Notre Dame when it’s all said and done. His visit this past weekend went great, and again, the expectation is that he chooses the Irish.

*** Rock Island (Ill.) Alleman 2023 offensive tackle Charles Jagusah finally made his return visit to Notre Dame on Saturday and visited Michigan the following day. I had said before that I thought Jagusah was a return visit away from committing to Notre Dame, but that appears to be wrong. Jagusah doesn’t look to be all that close to making a decision as he’s looking at taking official visits first.

As far as his day at Notre Dame goes, in talking with sources on the Irish side of things and Jagusah himself, I’m told the elite prospect’s visit went really well. He clicked with the staff and thinks highly of them. Jagusah is hard to read because he’s so reserved as a young man, but at the end of the day, I believe he will end up committing to the Fighting Irish. I have my prediction logged for him and feel good about it.

*** Notre Dame made a big move for Pfafftown (N.C.) Reagan 2023 interior offensive lineman Sam Pendleton during the visit. A pitch that went over really well for Pendleton was the “think big” presentation that director of recruiting Chad Bowden conducted with him, which details the four for 40 pitch. Notre Dame may be the team to beat for Pendleton coming out of the visit. He spoke very highly of the Irish staff when I interviewed him on Sunday night.

Clemson is the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) leader for Pendleton, but I’ve heard that the Tigers are not the biggest competition here. Michigan and N.C. State are more notable threats for Notre Dame.

*** Not a weekend visitor but someone who visited last week is Carlsbad (Calif.) High 2024 quarterback Julian Sayin. You can read my post-visit article on him here. I’m told the Notre Dame staff thinks highly of Sayin, and I could very well see him ending up as the Irish’s signal-caller in the 2024 class. But the fact of the matter is that until Notre Dame finishes up its 2023 quarterback cycle, it won’t take any 2024 signal-callers. I’d be stunned if ND takes a 2024 quarterback before a 2023 one.

*** It was Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic 2024 safety Kaj Sanders’ first trip to Notre Dame, so his time in South Bend as a sophomore was more of a get-to-know-you visit. I’m told the Fighting Irish staff really liked Sanders, and he was impressed by everything he saw during the visit. He’s a good looking cornerback/safety hybrid prospect, just like Jayden Bellamy, who the Irish signed from Bergen in the 2022 class. Look for Notre Dame to make Sanders a big priority target as the 2024 class heats up.

*** I haven’t been able to catch up with Rochester (Mich.) Adams 2024 tight end Brady Prieskorn yet, but Notre Dame sources are raving about this young man. He’s the type of tight end the Irish want in the 2024 class with his versatility as a player. Notre Dame will have to pull him out of Michigan’s backyard, but the four-star tight end is really liking the Irish early on.

*** The other notable 2024 prospects from Michigan who visited Saturday were River Rouge (Mich.) High wide receiver Nick Marsh and Harper Woods (Mich.) High safety Jacob Oden. At this point in time, I wouldn’t project either to end up at Notre Dame. This isn’t to say that they didn’t have a good time in South Bend, but their recruitments will likely trend away from Notre Dame.

*** Notre Dame had two class of 2023 commits in the Gug over the weekend. Irvington (N.J.) High safety Adon Shuler and Concord (Calif.) De La Salle Cooper Flanagan visited South Bend, and it was their second time on campus together, as they also hung out during the Georgia Tech weekend last November. Alabama and others are after both Irish pledges but are expected to stick with Notre Dame.

    What about Dante Moore?
The five-star quarterback from Detroit Martin Luther King spoke to a handful of reporters Saturday at the Elite 11 stop in Northeast Ohio, and Dante Moore says a lot without actually giving away much. It’s a great press conference trait for quarterbacks to have. Not only does Moore not say much publicly, his camp also keeps information close to their vest.

But there are three thoughts I have that I want to share:

    • It appears he will take official visits. Moore has continued to make two things very clear: he plans to make official visits before announcing a commitment before the start of his senior year. I couldn’t tell you the number of prospects who I’ve covered that planned to take officials but pushed their timelines up and committed. There was a sense that Moore may commit in April, but folks close to him really want him to take more visits, and Moore is just fine with that.
    • The longer his recruitment drags out, the more nervous you should get. This is more common sense than it is recruiting insight. From everything I’ve gathered, Notre Dame has been the leader for Moore for much of this calendar year. But things can change over time, especially if he takes four other official visits (we’d assume Notre Dame would be one of his five). The more he sees and and likes other schools, the more complicated his recruitment becomes.
    • Notre Dame sources continue to feel good here. Even if his recruitment goes deep into the summer, I expect Notre Dame to land Moore. In talking to Irish sources over the weekend, Notre Dame still feels really good too. I am having a hard time putting my finger on who the No. 2 school is for Moore. One day it seems like LSU. The next you hear about Oregon. Then Michigan feels it is back as a top contender. But I do have a good feel on which school is No. 1 for Moore, and it’s the program I placed a prediction for to land him back in February — Notre Dame.

If Moore does end up elsewhere, it’ll be a major sting for the Irish, but he’s the type of program-changing prospect that Notre Dame has to take a major swing for to win a national championship. The staff is leaving it all on the table for Moore.
