sounds like everyone is very high on the new DL commit...he's basically a top 100 SDE/DT he also won DL MVP on Sunday at the Rivals camp and was one of the top DLinemen at the UA camp recently too...kid is legit Prister's film review Spoiler A technician with all the physical tools to be a dynamic Big/strongside end for Notre Dame. That, in one quick summation, strongly hints as to what Brandon Davis-Swain – the 6-foot-4, 240-pound defensive lineman out of West Bloomfield, Mich. – can be as he grows up. What limited film we’ve seen of him comes from his sophomore season at West Bloomfield High School when he was 15-years old. This is a strongside end prospect that is about to explode. And Saturday, during Notre Dame’s Blue-Gold Game weekend festivities, he became the first verbal commitment of Notre Dame’s Class of 2024. To get a complete understanding of Davis-Swain, his work in a camp setting helps complete the picture and is why “technician” was the first word used to describe his defensive line play. It is remarkable how well-developed this four-star prospect’s array of pass rush/extricating moves are. There is a fluidity to his game that is rarely seen from a player so young. But he also has a sturdy backside to launch his propulsion toward the quarterback and set the edge against the run. Ranked as the No. 158 prospect in the Class of 2024 by 247Sports, Davis-Swain can be disarming to offensive lineman. He’s no one-trick pony. He can beat you on the outside with a spin move or a speed rush. He can beat you inside with a lightning-quick sidestep. He can beat you with what Irish Illustrated’s Kevin Sinclair calls a “bull-and-pull” rush in which he grabs the offensive lineman, tosses him to one side, and then barges into the offensive backfield. He also has the athleticism to come off the edge from a two-point stance, although the dilemma he presents from a three-point stance is greater because his low starting point and gap choice is frightening for an offensive guard or tackle. Watch his work below at an Under Armour camp. He is light on his feet – a true athlete – as he navigates his way in and around the tackling bags. We see these techniques in camp settings and in games where he attacks opponents with a self-assured confidence that he’s going to come up with a move to counter the opposition. Swain-Davis beats offensive linemen before they can seal the gap, due in part to their inability to know if he’s going to try to crease the gap to the right of the offensive lineman or to his left. He presents an anxiety-inducing dilemma. As a three-technique, he would be great once he added another 30+ pounds. But the best way to use the complete package that is Davis-Smith is at that Big end position where he can gain muscle/weight at his own pace and use his quickness and toolbox full of ways to beat an offensive lineman. Davis-Swain has abilities that force opposing offensive coordinators to scheme against him. Davis-Swain’s offer list is sure to expand despite his Notre Dame commitment. Most of his suitors – Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan and Michigan State – are from the Midwest. But he also has offers from Nebraska, Mississippi, Penn State, Tennessee and West Virginia. Davis-Swain has national recruit abilities. 4COMMENTS This is a Khalid Kareem-like Big end who offers alignment flexibility from a five- or three-technique starting point. When you think of Big end prospects to stop the run with high-end pass rush capabilities, you think of prospects like Davis-Swain. He is a statement commitment for the Irish in the Class of 2024 and underrated as the No. 158 prospect.
and really positive news here, Trieu just visited with Jagusah and posted this today the "closer" being referenced here is location to home
Sully Absher and Monroe Freeling are absolutely gigantic human beings as soon to be seniors based on their pics from the weekend
it's weird, Singer has been almost silent on recruiting updates and he was apparently in SB for the event...some of the posters there are wondering what's going on w/ the lack of updates
dont know if we already had this posted, but Pendleton is committing tonight at 630pm live of CBSSports
this line from O'Malley's Musings today really got me to see how far we have come on the defensive side of the ball...pretty sure just about everyone of those guys would have started on Weis's teams
Is JD Bertrand a clear backup? thought he would be at least a 1b kinda guy given his season last year
I like what D3 said about the inside linebackers. Something like They better be on top of their game or they’ll get Wally Pipp’d real quick because Junior Tualalamamakkkka is legit. Sry I’m too lazy to look up the correct spelling on his name.
I remember there were some people whining last year (not necessarily on this board) about taking JR because he wasn't athletic enough seriously, every class should have a thumper like that. He's the guy that sets the tone for the entire defense and if he's a Poly, even better
Not sure if it was here or B&G but someone talked about a poly LB corp Liufau, Junior and Bothello and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.
on the inside the Garage podcast Kyle Hamilton said every Poly player they’ve had is the most laid back person you can imagine off the field. Then they step on the field and you’re like damn you got a screw loose. It was on the Bettis podcast when he was talking about Troy P
Every Polynesian I know is exactly that way. Giant teddy bears but loyal to the point that they’re the first person you need of there’s ever trouble.
Gold Standard Spoiler Notre Dame had a massive recruiting weekend for its Blue-Gold Game, and it’d be near impossible at this point to have the latest on every single prospect in attendance. But this week’s Gold Standard includes updates on some of the top names on campus, how their respective visits went and what’s the latest in their recruitments. *** The biggest development from the weekend is Notre Dame’s positioning with Belmont (N.C.) South Point’s Sullivan Absher, the No. 172 prospect and No. 14 offensive tackle per the 2023 On3 Consensus. The Irish have been in a tight battle with Clemson — and to some extent N.C. State — for the impressive four-star prospect, but intel out of the weekend is that Notre Dame pulled ahead of the Tigers and is in prime position to land his commitment. I logged a prediction for Notre Dame to land Absher over a month ago, and I’m feeling better about it than ever. *** The other two key offensive line visitors from the weekend were Cincinnati Lakota East’s Austin Siereveld and Mount Pleasant (S.C.) Oceanside Collegiate Academy’s Monroe Freeling. Siereveld’s recruitment still looks to be a tight battle between Notre Dame and Ohio State, and he’s hoping to make a decision sooner than later. He’s mulled over committing to Ohio State, but he can’t keep Notre Dame off his mind. I think the Irish may just pull off the upset. And as for Freeling, I haven’t heard much on coming off the visit; the vibe remains that his recruitment is still a tight race between Clemson and Notre Dame. All in all, Notre Dame offensive line recruiting is heating up and looks to be in a great position. The Irish are in good shape to land a pledge from four-star interior offensive lineman Sam Pendleton tonight, and I’m really liking the Irish to land Absher. And between Freeling, Siereveld and Rock Island (Ill.) Alleman’s Charles Jagusah, you’d like to think the Irish will land two of the three. *** I wrote an update on Tampa (Fla.) Berkeley Prep’s Keon Keeley, the No. 10 prospect and No. 1 EDGE in America, which you can read here. Keeley doesn’t do many interviews and when he does, he doesn’t like to give away a whole lot. But by all accounts, Notre Dame is looking better than ever to hold on to his commitment. I had some concern about Florida in his recruitment as the close-to-home option, but I don’t believe the Gators have much of a shot to flip him. Alabama and Ohio State are still in the mix, but I actually don’t have much concern about the Crimson Tide either. Ohio State has done a fantastic job recruiting Keeley, but to be completely honest, I’m not sure Keeley will visit any other schools. When Justyn Rhett recently decommitted from Notre Dame, the Irish staff made it clear to their commits that they were not okay with them taking officials to other programs. With that in mind, I don’t believe Keeley will official elsewhere. Notre Dame isn’t out of the woods just yet, but I believe right now that Keeley is pretty firm in his pledge. *** One new prediction that I really want to put in out of the weekend is for Largo (Fla.) High’s Adarius Hayes, the No. 46 prospect and No. 6 linebacker per the 2024 On3 Consensus. He asked me not to log the prediction because of the fallout and assumptions that will happen because of it, so I will respect him on that. It’d be a projection pick, but I do believe the Irish hold the top spot for him early on. And this would be a massive get for the Irish out of Florida. Notre Dame is after him, and I believe the staff will pull off the upset over the in-state programs. *** Notre Dame badly wants to add Uniontown (Pa.) Laurel Highlands’ Rodney Gallagher and Austin (Texas) Westlake’s Jaden Greathouse to its 2023 wide receiver class, and the Irish got closer to that goal over the weekend, but there’s still more work to do. Sources on the Notre Dame side feel good about both recruitments, but I’d expect Gallagher and Greathouse to stretch things into the summer before making a commitment. I definitely feel that way on Gallagher, while Greathouse is a bit tougher to read at this point. I do believe Greathouse will end up choosing between Notre Dame and Texas. He will be announcing a top four schools list on Sunday. *** I’m loving where Notre Dame stands with Lake Stevens (Wash.) High’s Jayden Limar, the No. 270 recruit and No. 15 running back per the 2023 On3 Consensus. It may take a bit longer for him to make a commitment than anticipated, but I still believe the Irish will win this one whenever that time comes — likely this summer. Michigan and Oregon are the other main schools in contention form what I hear, and he’s also taking a trip to see Arizona and Arizona State this week. But Limar is expected to officially visit Notre Dame for the massive June 10 weekend, and my gut tells me he’s likely to pop after that weekend. I asked Limar yesterday if he talked to Notre Dame about their loaded running back room over the weekend, and he said the staff explained that whole situation to him and he feels good about it. So all is well on that front. *** I don’t have much at this point on Norcross (Ga.) High’s Lawson Luckie, the No. 201 prospect and No. 14 player in the 2023 class. The Georgia commit made a surprise visit to Notre Dame this weekend, and sources tell me that it went well, but I don’t have any insight as to if the Irish will be able to flip him from Georgia and how much of a possibility that is. But a source tells me that Luckie really liked Notre Dame and is liking the job the Irish staff is doing in his recruiting process. *** It’s still early for Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco’s Peyton Woodyard, who ranks as the No. 19 prospect and No. 2 safety according to the 2024 On3 Consensus, but Notre Dame is in great position for him. I have my early prediction in favor of the Irish for him, and this weekend’s visit only helped ND in their push for him. He’s going to visit a handful of schools in the South this summer, but the vibe here is that Notre Dame is in the best spot for him.
So nd apparently had a legit shot at JT Daniels, Kedon Slovis, Jaxson Dart and turned them down in favor of Buchner
I think the only one of those guys I’d want would be Dart. Certainly looks like a mistake after Pyne looked awful Saturday though.
I like how a lot of you guys are talking shit about how Pyne looked when he only had like 5 scholarship WRs on the roster to throw to, when ND gets back...wait...there are only 5 wrs.. fuck
None whatsoever. I’m genuinely asking. Seems weird for a team with an unproven QB to turn down those names.
yes it would be, not sure what to think honestly. I bet they were just interested and nd did not push for them or it’s total bs who knows. also pyne was ok last year, maybe they just felt like the upgrade in talent was so minimal that they did not want to risk bringing in someone else in the qb room.
Slovis being interested was reported at the time iirc. No interest in Daniels. Dart was probably a phone call that went nowhere. Rees loves Buchner apparently, hope he’s right.
There was such a coordinated "Tyler Buchner: Reasons Why He May Be ND Fans Best Hope Since Jesus Christ" effort from the beat reporters in like February/March time frame that it made me feel like Rees or someone must have known they could potentially be taking some shit down the line for not taking a transfer, as in we probably did turn down some legit QB interest
Not taking a starting-caliber QB will be a major mistake IMO. Mostly because Buchner can’t walk campus without getting injured.
I don't think it was so much choosing Buchner over those guys as it was not promising anybody the job was theirs when they walked in the door. They'd have to compete with him. Each of those guys left because They'd had their spots taken. Of course they should have to compete. If they were better, good. We'll never know.
Unfortunately if you took any one of those guys Buchner likely leaves and you’re still a missed stair away from Drew Pyne. Some of this is also about Tommy developing his guy so he has something to recruit to.
Yeah I was talking more so about injuries than someone beating out Buchner. But then again I’m just an Ohio State fan who lived through the 2014 season.
I don’t believe the narrative that Buchner leaves assuming the guy you bring in is only there for a year. He’s a true soph with major injury concerns and likely going to play some regardless. If you can’t hold onto that, you have greater issues with the program
Slovis and Dart both have multiple years remaining, Daniels would be the only one year rental of those 3 I believe.
basically Gallagher, Greathouse, Freeling and Absher are all ours. Said we lead for all 4. D3 said he hates the recruiting reports that seem like they’re coming from a fanboy so he actively worked to try to find something negative and couldn’t.
He’s a 3 star talent, not sure about him. Seems like a 3+ year project at guard or transfer out with a degree type player
