He’s proven, and that’s what makes this scary. They’ll stop spending money on high schoolers because so many will be busts, and instead they’ll start buying players from other schools who have already proven they can play.

Oregon just offered Avery Johnson. Seems like an odd time to do so fresh off the Dante Moore commitment.

    More QB Recruiting Notes

This weekend will continue to be interesting in terms of quarterback recruiting.

I was told Oregon is expected to ‘formally’ offer Maize (Kan.) QB Avery Johnson. He’s been on the Ducks radar since his visit in January. Additionally Notre Dame has turned up the heat on Johnson in the past couple of weeks. Which is certainly a signal they are losing confidence in Moore.

I’m mentioning this so that when you see Johnson post the offer on social media, don’t let this be a signal to you that Oregon feels less confident with Dante Moore. That’s not the case.

Hopkins is the best. Oregon offering him has nothing to do with how they feel about Moore. But Notre Dame recruiting him? It surely means they are losing confidence in Moore.

On this NIL shit, I want these high school kids to get every penny coming out, but these numbskulls at the NCAA have to figure out tampering.

I don’t know what the answer is, but it’s been going on for years with schools recruiting FCS or lower level players who outplay their recruitment, but buying players houses is a bridge too far.

It needs to become a true professional organization with rules and enforcement. No academic is going to want to actually do that, but because of their putting their heads in the sand on the issue, they’ll instead just let this bastard child of a system live for awhile until college sports just eat themselves from the inside.

I didn’t mind it when it came out. Coaches leave whenever they want to, and suppose a player comes in and the new coach changes their scheme. They have to wait a year because their coach bailed?

Like I said I don’t have answers and don’t want to sound like get off my lawn guy but the way it is now kinda sucks.

If you have a degree in hand go get your graduate degree & go where you want to get paid. If you're good enough to take it to the NFL good for you, if not get paid at whatever university is willing to pay you. This is where free agency could be viable in college football.

While the NCAA still exists they could at the very least put in some operational restrictions that could temper the madness created by the transfer portal. Levy big scholarship restrictions to those who are proven to tamper. To your point on transfers, put in protections for things like head coaching changes and the no brainers like a death in the family (fuck you Eddie V) but revert back to having to sit a year.

Being able to move freely creates problems with roster management (also fucking over other kids) and also encourages scrupulous behind the scenes bullshit. At least try something.

I wouldn’t even mind something like free transfer and immediate after year one, but one year wait after year two or three and of course free transfer and no wait if you graduate. Throw in something like coaching changes and I’m listening.

    Gold Standard

Notre Dame’s Blue-Gold Game was a massive recruiting weekend. March 17-19 had some big-time visitors. The Clemson and Stanford home games figure to be huge recruiting weekends as well.

But there won’t be a bigger weekend for Notre Dame football recruiting this calendar year than June 10-12. It’s still a bit early to know exactly who is visiting this summer for official visits, but the gist is that all of Notre Dame’s priority targets will be on campus. At least, that’s the plan for the Fighting Irish staff.

As of today, we’re expecting nearly all of Notre Dame’s 11 commitments to use their official visit June 10-12. Yes, that would include Tampa (Fla.) Berkeley Prep’s Keon Keeley, the No. 10 recruit and No. 1 EDGE per the 2023 On3 Consensus. And from what I’m hearing, it’s the only official visit Keeley plans to take.

We’re unsure if Merrillville (Ind.) Andrean’s Drayk Bowen, who ranks as the No. 68 recruit and No. 5 linebacker in the 2023 class, has a busy travel baseball schedule in the summer, so he may not be able to use his official in June.

Who are the Notre Dame targets expected for June 10-12?
*** Burlington (Mass.) Buckingham Browne & Nichols School’s Ronan Hanafin, the No. 399 recruit and No. 38 safety per the 2023 On3 Consensus, has told On3 that he’ll be on campus for that weekend. He has the following four official visits set: Clemson June 3-5, Notre Dame June 10-12, Nebraska June 17-19 and Boston College June 24-26. He’s also expected to get back to Alabama, another notable contender in his recruitment. The last we heard, Notre Dame was considered the team to beat, and the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) reflects that at 86.1 percent, although that specific percentage is a big bold.

*** Folsom (Calif.) High’s Rico Flores Jr., the No. 233 overall player and No. 33 wide receiver in America, has been scheduled for this weekend for quite some time now, and it’s a massive official visit for Notre Dame. Flores is a key receiver target but hasn’t been able to visit South Bend just yet. He visited Georgia and Ohio State in April and is expected to take trips to UCLA and Texas ahead of his July 3 commitment date as well. Notre Dame’s contact with Flores has been fantastic, but it’s tough to get a strong gauge of how interested he is in the Irish without a visit. The June 10 weekend will be everything for the Irish’s chances to land him.

*** Uniontown (Pa.) Laurel Highlands’ Rodney Gallagher, the nation’s No. 105 prospect and No. 18 receiver, announced Sunday that he’ll be taking his official visit to Notre Dame June 10. His first visit to South Bend was for the Blue-Gold Game April 23. He also has official visits set for West Virginia June 3-5, Oklahoma State June 13-15 and Penn State June 17-19. Notre Dame is a serious threat for Gallagher, but it’s a tight battle with the Mountaineers and Nittany Lions.

*** Lake Stevens (Wash.) High’s Jayden Limar, the No. 270 prospect and No. 15 running back in the land, is expected to officially visit Notre Dame June 10. There are a couple players who I think could potentially make commitments before the summer, and Limar is one of them. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him commit later this month or right after his Notre Dame visit. Michigan and Oregon are the other contenders for Limar, but I believe the Irish are the clear leader.

*** Hagerstown (Md.) St. James School’s Devan Houstan, the No. 214 prospect and No. 28 defensive lineman in the land, is another prospect I could see committing before June. And I am hearing that he will visit for the June 10 weekend. If he were to commit to another school before June, then I’d doubt he’d take the South Bend trip.

Notre Dame has three defensive line commitments already, and I have a prediction logged for Houstan to join what could be one of the Irish’s best D-line classes ever, at least on paper. Michigan, Wake Forest and South Carolina are few other contenders, but even though Houstan has only been to South Bend once, the Irish have done a fantastic job in his recruitment, and we believe ND has the strong lead.

*** If Houstan is commit No. 4 on the Notre Dame defensive line, will there be a No. 5? Notre Dame certainly hopes that Fort Washington (Md.) DeMath Catholic’s Jason Moore, the No. 39 recruit and No. 5 defensive lineman nationally, picks the Irish, and early indications are that Moore will be on campus for the massive June weekend. Ohio State and Penn State are among the other top contenders for Moore. Irish sources are optimistic that Notre Dame will be able to pull off the massive recruiting win.

*** I could see Belmont (N.C.) South Point’s Sullivan Absher, the No. 172 overall player and No. 14 offensive tackle nationally, commit before June as well. Clemson, N.C. State and Notre Dame are his top three schools, and I get the sense that he’s seen enough of the recruiting process and is ready to commit to a program. For now, Absher is expected to officially visit Notre Dame June 10. I do give the Irish the edge over the ACC schools to land him.

*** I’m hearing that Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy’s Samuel M’Pemba, the No. 31 recruit and No. 1 “athlete” in the 2023 class, will officially visit Notre Dame June 10. Georgia, Michigan, Missouri and Notre Dame are four schools linked with M’Pemba’s recruitment, and it’s really anyone’s guess at this point as to where he ends up, in my opinion. Notre Dame getting him back on campus is big; we’ll see if the visit comes to fruition.

*** Notre Dame would love nothing more than to land Baton Rouge (La.) University Lab’s Jaiden Ausberry, the No. 55 overall player and No. 3 linebacker in the 2023 cycle, which would be a big upset over LSU. Ausberry loved his Notre Dame visit in March — his second time in South Bend — and is expected back on campus in June. Miami and Auburn are a couple other schools in the mix for Ausberry.

*** Mount Pleasant (S.C.) Oceanside Collegiate Academy’s Monroe Freeling, who ranks as the nation’s No. 58 player and No. 6 offensive tackle, is another prospect expected to officially visit Notre Dame June 10. Notre Dame hosted Freeling for the Blue-Gold game. Clemson is considered the biggest competition for Notre Dame in the Freeling sweepstakes.

*** St. Louis De Smet’s Christian Gray, the No. 108 overall recruit and No. 10 cornerback nationally, is expected to officially visit Notre Dame June 10. He’s also going to officially visit USC, and I’d assume that he’ll take an official to LSU as well. The Tigers look to be Notre Dame’s biggest competition for Gray, and it’s become quite the tight battle between the two programs.

There are a handful of other prospects I could see officially visiting Notre Dame for the June 10 weekend, such as quarterback Dante Moore, offensive lineman Charles Jagusah and running back Jeremiyah Love, but this article is meant to tell you guys who I’ve specifically heard for that weekend and not to blurt out every name on the board. In the specific case of Moore, he keeps his visit plans close to his vest until he’s ready for the public to know about it. So we may have to wait a bit on word from Moore’s camp on a visit to South Bend.

Also of note: I’ve confirmed the official visit dates for Hanafin, Gallagher, Limar and Flores but the rest of the prospects are not 100 percent confirmed yet. Make sure to stay locked in to our master visitor list for those confirmations.

What about the June 17 weekend?
There are two players I’m hearing for that weekend so far. Houston The Kinkaid School’s Micah Bell, the No. 383 recruit and No. 37 cornerback nationally, tells me that he’ll be officially visiting Notre Dame June 17. I’m also hearing Austin (Texas) Westlake’s Jaden Greathouse, the country’s No. 122 player and No. 21 receiver, should be in South Bend that weekend.

Notre Dame should be considered the team to beat for Bell, but I’m not ready to put in a prediction for him just yet as I want to see how things shake out elsewhere on the defensive back board. Notre Dame is battling Texas for Greathouse, and I give the Irish a slight edge to land him.

Notre Dame has the nation's No. 1 recruiting class in 2023, and the Irish continue to do well with several other high-profile prospects.

So much so I entered a trio of Crystal Ball picks in favor of Notre Dame, and each one ranks in the Top247.

The first is for defensive lineman Devan Houstan of Hagerstown (Md.) St. James. He made a recent visit to campus and he spoke glowingly about the academic opportunities as well as how he could fit into Notre Dame's defense.

Although he can play both sides of the ball, the Irish want him on defense. He is coming off a junior season in which he had 50 tackles, including 7 1/2 sacks, in eight games.

I am also joining the mix and putting in a Crystal Ball for Belmont (S.C.) South Point Top247 offensive tackle Sullivan Absher to land with the Irish. He began April by listing a top three of Notre Dame, Clemson and NC State, and the Irish gained separation.

He is a physical run blocker as a left tackle at South Point, but he will have to develop his pass pro technique since his team rarely throws the ball. In fact, it attempted less than four passes per game in the fall.

    1COMMENTS
The final Crystal Ball pick is in the 2024 class, and it is for Princeton (N.J.) Hun edge Owen Wafle. The Top247 prospect was offered March 17 and he visited later in the month.

Notre Dame has 11 commits in the class. One is rated with five stars, Tampa Berkeley edge Keon Keeley, and the other 10 are four-star prospects.

Maybe make it where you can only get NIL money from one school (or one P5 school). Going to raise the offers out of HS potentially and mitigate poaching. Definitely not the best solution but it's better than what's going on with USC

If what you guys are saying is true about Notre Dame’s NIL views, it’s very odd to me historically.

Notre Dame was at the front of efforts to form the CFA in the late 1970’s to end the NCAA monopoly on TV rights.

After the US Supreme Court win by CFA members Oklahoma and Georgia in 1984, Notre Dame was the only school to negotiate its own sustainable TV package. Every other independent joined a conference.

The last time college football had this type of existential crisis over money and change, it’s arguable Notre Dame navigated it better than any school.

ND will be active, but it won't come directly from the program, nor be arranged in the open by the program as a recruiting tool like you see at Tennessee and A&M, etc. There will be collectives, but there will be clear connections to use of name, image and likeness as opposed to blatant pay for play.

According to sources, one of the nation’s Top50 overall prospects in the class of 2023 has set an official visit to Notre Dame. Here is the latest from 247Sports and Irish Illustrated.

From what we’ve been told, Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Catholic four-star defensive lineman Jason Moore will take an official visit to Notre Dame for the big recruiting weekend from June 10-12. This weekend will be loaded with top prospects and the 6-6, 250-pounder is a priority target for the Fighting Irish

Prister did a film room on Jaden Greathouse...I think this one will be over in June when he OVs

I get why his ranking won't rise like it should (he won't be a round 1 NFL pick because he doesn't have crazy top end speed) but he should be ranked in the top 75 based on what he will do in college...this guy would be a massive pickup

A combination of size, strength, tremendous get-off and sharp route-running earmark the pass-catching game of 6-foot-2, 210-pound wide receiver Jaden Greathouse out of Westlake High School in Austin, Texas.

As a junior, Greathouse caught 66 passes for 1,274 yards (19.3-yard average) and an incredible 20 touchdowns. In his first two years in the program, he combined for 116 receptions for 2,419 yards (16.6) and 23 scores. That gives him a whopping three-year total of 182 grabs for 3,134 yards (15.2) and 43 touchdowns.

Greathouse isn’t a burner although he does find ways to get behind the “deepest of the deep” defensive backs on the 6A level in Texas where he has posted monster numbers for the three-time defending state champion Chaparrals.

He doesn’t necessarily sky to high-point receptions ala Irish commit Braylon James. He is more what I would call a “sea level” receiver. He’s not going to pluck passes out of the air 10 feet above the ground. But he’s ultra-productive when he catches the football in stride, physically battles to win 50-50 balls, runs through tackles and scores touchdowns at an incredible rate of once every 4.2 receptions at Westlake High.

Greathouse really puts cornerbacks on the defensive with his outstanding burst off the snap of the football. A limited number of opponents try to press him, and when they do, Greathouse frequently creates space with precise, darting routes and then wiggle in space. There is a precision to his route-running if not great speed.

Greathouse has been compared to former Notre Dame commitment and eventual USC signee C.J. Williams, who spurned the Irish months after his commitment. Neither are going to clock a 4.4-flat time in the 40. Both are going to play a precise game at wide receiver with strong hands and vice-like pass-catching ability.

What separates Greathouse for me is his tackle-breaking ability after the catch. He has some power runner in him. He’s not super quick-twitch, but he’s a physical presence after the catch. He plays to his listed 6-foot-2 length and frequently wins the rep with positioning and strong reach-back attributes.

Greathouse’s physicality really shines as a blocker. I frequently use the term “willing blocker.” Greathouse is more than that. He relishes it, craves it, needs it. He seemingly gets as much satisfaction overpowering the defender he’s blocking as he does running through a tackle attempt with the football tucked away.

Notre Dame has been embroiled in a battle with hometown Texas, Oklahoma and South Carolina. Other offers have come from Arkansas and Mississippi State from the SEC, Baylor and TCU in the Big 12, Colorado, Oregon and USC in the Pac-12, Miami from the ACC, and Michigan and Penn State in the Big Ten. His appeal is nationwide.

The Irish hosted Greathouse the weekend of the Blue-Gold Game (April 23) and will receive an official visit June 17 from the four-star, No. 111 composite prospect in the Class of 2023. (Note: 247 Sports lists him as the No. 219 prospect, which could reflect some of the speed components missing from his game.)

247Sports’ Tom Loy and Irish Illustrated’s Kevin Sinclair recently put Crystal Ball predictions in for Notre Dame – both at the six level. On May 2, 247Sports Director of Football Recruiting Steve Wiltfong joined Loy/Sinclair with a level-six pick, countering the Crystal Ball cast by Mike Roach of Horns247 in early April.

If the Irish do land Greathouse, they would get a player physically prepared to compete at a high level upon his arrival next year.
