Watched the episodes again this weekend, and he's definitely leaving voice mails in the first episode. He must have been doing the same in the last episode when he was on the street after she died, although it doesn't say it. I'm still really confused how they had the relationships they did (Marc with Layla, Steven with his mother), though. Seems like he was married to Layla for a long time and she had no clue about his DID or Steven, while I just don't get how Steven could have any kind of relationship with his mother considering how much she hated Marc + him leaving home so long ago.
So they released a final trailer that originally said series finale and then quickly changed it to season finale. Hmm. Could be nothing or could be getting a second season.
Do we know how long Marc and Layla were married? I got the opposite impression, but it isn’t based on anything. I figured Steven never had an actual conversation with his Mom and it was all a kind of “charade”. Considering they are the same person, deep down I'm assume Steven(/Marc) knows the truth but Steven is just playing his part.
The way I understood it was Steven was manifested to only have and retain the positive memories of his mother. Hence the “later gator” comment was a positive thought. Why Steven was also yelling at Marc as to why he remembered her like this she was never like this.
There was some mention of over 10 years ago, but I don't quite remember. I guess in my head I thought that was how long ago Layla's dad was killed, and I kind of assumed they met somewhat shortly after that? Not sure how old she was at that time, though. I'm probably very wrong on that.
Right, but what about his mom's side of that? Has Steven been leaving messages that his mom never returned since Marc left the house? Or did the mom treat Steven well when he'd call even after Marc left? In the second episode I think Steven tells Layla that his place is "my mom's flat," which Layla was surprised by because Marc had clearly told her that they don't speak.
Steven only remembers the positive from his mom from birth, from Marc’s memories. He’s pushed out the bad and Marc remembers it all. The messages are just a coping mechanism to convince himself his mother is still alive and communicating with him through voicemails and post cards. Steven is maintaining the illusion that his mother is still alive. I don’t think Marc ever told Layla his mother died and he vanished after her funeral. I got the impression that Steven only started calling on that day in the street.
I don't think Layla knows his mom is dead. She did know Marc and his mom didn't have a relationship during their time together, though.
I think the finale was always going to be a bit of a letdown because this was just a hard story to wrap up in this kind of format, but it's hard to think they couldn't have done more there. I feel like Ethan Hawke deserved better than this episode, especially, for the work he'd done with that character the first 4 episodes.
Really liked the show and the characters but it was just good in my opinion as far as the shows go. I liked Loki more, but I knew nothing about Moon Knight going into the show and the other shows were all established MCU characters so maybe that has some bias as well.
This would have made it better. It had a lot going on and all “new” stuff with all the characters that it will make more sense when I binge watch it again.
Wished it was longer. Knew that going in. What they did was pretty great when you take a step back. We got a story that was really respectful of the DID aspect of the character, I was not suspecting that going in. They played the Marc and Steven stories pretty great. And now that it’s over, what remains of the MK character for future crossovers? A demented murderous psychopath who will do anything to get the bad guy and won’t take shit from anyone on the way. Also it looks like Marc takes over the billionaire role. Some YouTuber predicted Layla->Scarab after ep 3 (I think) because of obscure references throughout, those guys are crazy.
I think it's a tough thing to pull off in a movie or show because people are so used to the idea of a comic book movie being about Hero v. Villain. The hero has to stop the villain at the end and we judge how the movie/show was based on how good that conflict is resolved. MK's main conflict isn't about Marc/Steven v. Harrow/Ammit. It's Marc v. Steven/himself. And we got that resolution in episode 5, so it was always going to be difficult to then come back in a finale and resolve the other stuff that hit in the same way episode 5 hit. I hate to compare it to Thor2, but the problem with that movie is the conflict of the story was Thor v. Loki, and that part was actually good so we didn't give a fuck about the stupid elves at any point. I kind of feel as though some of these D+ series to this point have struggled to close in part for the same reasons. The most interesting conflicts in MK, WV and Cap/WS have all been internal more than hero v. villain. I think my disappointment in this particular finale is that Harrow actually is a good/interesting character for most of the season, and I think they could have served that part of the story better than they did.
Bit of a letdown finale unfortunately. Loved the previous 2-3 episodes. Big gripe about not showing Jake's rampage. Also hate noticing small things that get by during editing e.g., Jake never pulling the trigger despite the gun firing twice in the post credits scene.
Little late to this discussion but when Steven is on the street talking on the phone I'm pretty sure the phone is still on the home screen.
I went into this knowing nothing so I decided to binge it and I’m so glad I did. I will be doing this from now on.
At 17 seconds. Looks like he fired 3 times, 2 that which we could see. Small nitpicking that bothers me. Spoiler
That's a valid point after this Rust fiasco. But they could have just put all 3 mussel flares outside the car instead
thought ep 5 was incredible. thought oscar isaac was great in this show in general. not sure i really liked anything else in it much.
Really enjoyed the series, though the finale was a bit underwhelming compared to the rest of the series IMO. Oscar Isaac was great. Felt like legion light, but a more coherent story.
Watched the Assembled show on this and it was crazy listening to Isaac talk about playing the characters. Basically said he started the show by only shooting Steven stuff and he stayed in character every day to try not to lose it. Said he told the director he basically would only do Steven or Mark on a day, but not both, to start. And then by the end he got comfortable enough where he was literally switching back in forth in scenes between the two. The talent to pull that on that level off is wild.
binged it tonight. loved it. Oscar Issac was incredible. the CGI-action scenes felt less distracting than prior movies and I felt Marvel didn't try to make the last "big battle" too ridiculous.
Took a long time to get through this show but catching up now that we are done. Mother in law has DID. In her case for #1 she understands what her alter ego does however slips into it in a triggering moment for her. Not sure on the second but she never talked to her parents about it and they never suspected anything. I would doubt the same for Marc.
