Had a bad feeling after the first, credit to Kuemper for keeping the Avs in it. Avs just kept coming in OT and the winner felt inevitable. Going to be a monumental task to try to win three in a row with how banged up the Lightning are and how good the Avs have been at home.

I can't believe they don't review that after every goal let alone a game winner in the Stanley Cup Finals.

I really don’t see what the controversy is about. I can’t wait for the NHL to overreact to the backlash and we have two minutes delays after some goals next season to precisely measure players on the ice during a line change.

I think the argument is that the 6th player played the puck not that it was just simply 6 skaters. That said I’m glad the goal counted and I’m NOT at all looking forward to the overreaction of this being another reviewable play next season Becusse the nhl really needs more reviews

I was under the impression you can’t touch the puck until the guy you are changing for is actually off the ice. Seems like one of those really close judgment plays that is going to infuriate whoever it goes against. But Tampa has been getting that voodo officiating for a while now. Not gonna feel bad that a close call went against them.

I’m not upset about the non call. It’s always a judgement call, considering Kadri played it with Mackinnon on the ice I think it should’ve been called but they missed it. Lightning had their chance to put Avs on the ropes in the first, didn’t do it.

I think the NHL has the worst refs in any league and even I don't see the big deal here. Didn't affect the play at all.

Agreed. If this wasn’t a SCF game winning OT goal, nobody would be saying a word about it. This is simply a normal change in today’s NHL. Perhaps they should change the rule, but there’s nothing about how this was (not) called that is inconsistent.

For refs I would take into account how hard it is to officiate the sport. I give nhl and nba refs a pretty big pass. Somewhat same with nfl only because their rules are written so poorly.

mlb though. Woof. They think they’re the attraction.

I dont get the argument that it's a judgement call. It most certainly is not. If the team posses the puck with 6 men on the ice, it's a penalty.

I was worried the NHL would get through this SCF without a confounding missed call. Glad everyone came together to make it happen.

Unlike the NFL, the NHL gives a little leverage to guys coming off the ice. This was not a big deal and Cooper whining to whine

Not at all. MacKinnon changing had no affect on the play. Once the guy comes on, he is the new guy on the ice and the guy changing is considered the extra man.

wait, what? No effect on the play? Kadri scored the goal and he jumped on the ice a good 2 seconds too soon. It had a huge effect on the play.

It’s definitely a judgment call or else there’d be 5+ too many men penalties called each game. So long as they’re allowed to change on the fly there will always be a grey area.

Tbh I wish they’d just stop calling the “played the puck too early after a change” too many men penalties and only called the clear-cut ones where a team has six players in the offensive or defensive zone.

You absolutely can change on the fly without a gray area.

Even so - calling this a grey area is really off the mark. It's not like Mackinnon was along the boards waiting to get in the door. He was a full 5-6 feet out in the ice.

yeah, that is the issue. Kadri had no business being on the ice while mackinnon was gassed and trying to get to the bench. If it was called with your logic players could just lag behind the play and a guy with fresh legs can join in the play to replace them.

What overreaction by the NHL is more likely to happen?

    1) They make too many men on the ice reviewable (gross and I hate it in football too in order to see if a guy is still 1 foot away from the sideline)
    2) They paint new 5' lines around the benches so that there's a zone a player needs to be in before a new player jumps on (more gross)
    3) They do both and now we have reviews to see if a guy's skate is one inch into the changing zone (this is the worst so that's what the NHL will do)

IMO the issue is that if Kadri had picked up the puck near the bench, the play get's blown dead and it's a too many men penalty. We see it happen all the time where a player coming on the ice has to let a puck go past him because the other player isn't off yet. The rule has always been officiated that you can't touch the puck until the player you are subbing for is off the ice. Because Kadri was on the other side of the ice, that interpretation was ignored.

Yes this is correct. Dudley tried to pull a fast one and the NHL told him no. The Panthers actually had the #1 pick that year so if Ovi was born 2 days earlier, he would have been a Panther anyway. Instead, Nathan Horton. :killme:

In the past the NHL draft was the wild west in terms of who was actually eligible to be picked. Especially when it came to Russian born players. If you really want a wild story, look into the Bure draft. The Canucks uncovered some random pro games that Bure played in that made him eligible for the draft. They buried the info and then took him in the 6th round even after Detroit tried to take him in the 5th and was told no.
