This is very narrow minded of you. Plenty of posters on here have been very active counteracting the far right’s swing toward fascism. Take a step back and think about your ignorance.

Like many cities, the further you get away from a Downtown the worse it gets.

With the exception of Davis, which I wouldn’t call a Sacto suburb even though it’s close in proximity, it’s probably the most progressive city in the state and has been for sometime. Plus some good FCS football in the area with the 2 schools.

i lived in Midtown and yeah there was some good bars, restaurants, etc but its a small area…..its still a small town in terms of the locals in terms of getting the hookups…….once u get past 16th st going west its an absolute fucking cesspool and its extremely segregated which gave it weird vibes too…..its just a aesthetically ugly place too compared to the Bay Area its like Nor Cal version of the Midwest just flat and ugly with terrible summer heat

Davis is okay for a smaller town but once u get past the college kids and out of towners who move their bc of UC Davis the actual locals from Yolo County aren’t progressive at all and much less the most progressive in California……my good friend got a job teaching in Dixon which is literally 5 minutes away from Davis and it was so red and conservative there she had a real hard time teaching there as she came from San Jose

there is some good FCS football being played in Davis with Hawkins and Sac St with Taylor and u are close to Tahoe so its got that going for it

Maine insurance agency posts deeply racist Juneteenth sign. Progressive, Allstate walk in response
The small town of Millinocket, Maine, is now officially on the map. But not for its famed Golden Road, North Maine Woods, or Baxter State Park hiking trails. Nope. Now the town that sits about three hours outside of Portland has become synonymous with a sign taped to the front window of the Harry E. Reed Insurance Agency on Juneteenth.

"Juneteenth ~it's whatever... We're closed. Enjoy your fried chicken & collard greens," the sign read.
This was the first year Maine celebrated Juneteenth as an official paid state holiday. Gov. Janet Mills signed the bill into law in 2021.

Alura Stillwagon, a Millinocket resident, told NPR she was “disgusted” when she saw the sign. "People have this idea that Maine isn't very racist and that it's pretty liberal. But up north, it's not like that at all,” she said.

Millinocket resident Lisa Groelly told WGME-13 that she wants to “see better for this community.”

“As a business owner, it's just not something you do. It really isn't.”

Stillwagon originally posted the image on Facebook with a caption reading, "The racism in Millinocket is real."

Backlash against the sign was immediate and swift.

In a statement sent to NPR, Allstate wrote:

“We are terminating our contract with this independent agent. Our commitment to Inclusive Diversity and Equity is non-negotiable and we take action when individuals violate our code of conduct."

WGME-13 reports that Progressive has also terminated its partnership with the Harry E. Reed agency.

"At Progressive, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) are fundamental to our Core Values. We're committed to creating an environment where our people feel welcomed, valued and respected and expect that anyone representing Progressive to take part in this commitment," Jeff Sibel, a Progressive spokesperson, wrote to NPR. "The sign is in direct violation of that commitment and doesn't align with our company's Core Values and Code of Conduct."

Tuesday, Millinocket Town Council Chair Steve Golieb posted a statement on Facebook that read:

"It is deeply saddening, disgraceful and unacceptable for any person, business, or organization to attempt to make light of Juneteenth and what it represents for millions of slaves and their living descendants… There is no place in the Town of Millinocket for such a blatant disregard of human decency."

According to WGME-13, a person identified as Melanie Higgins wrote a statement on the Harry E. Reed Facebook page saying she’s been reprimanded, adding: “I am so sorry for any pain I have caused and the negative attention it has brought to our beautiful community."
    Allstate dumped them

Warm climate, liberal state, and affordable unfortunately leaves the original person asking with few options.

If he wants to get super hot, then maybe Coachella Valley? Palm Springs area has a huge LGBTQ+ community, and lots of rich liberal Canadian snowbirds (a reason they’re getting minor league hockey next season).

There’s stupid money there in like Rancho Mirage, PGA West, etc., but also somewhat affordable places for people that live there year round.

Im not naive to realize that I’m pretty privileged to post a drunk thought and then actively spend today researching the move and broaching the topic with my wife and kids. Kids have various thoughts , wife wants out , she suggested NY or Connecticut. I could make that work but kids would be better off with help for college or with a housing down payment if we lived somewhere more affordable. What we will gain on the sale of our over inflated house we will lose on whatever we buy to ensure a good public education. Trying to find a unicorn, I grew up with diversity, I want that and do nothing democrats that can eventually be primaried. We’ll see what Monday brings with regards to a transfer request.

The So Cal housing market could go anywhere within the next 18 months. Shit got out of control and I think we’ll start to see a correction.

I work in the swimming pool industry and permits for new pool construction in May 2022 plummeted 60% from May 2021 in California. New swimming pool construction and the housing market are very intertwined here.

Moving from AZ to CO this week. Hoping its a step in the right direction. Hoping AZ goes from purple to blue in the next 20 or so years with all the CA defectors, but man the chuds are VERY vocal in AZ and all the local govts are run by the reds.

Colorado seems more liberal although I’m sure the rural areas are bad. At least I think the local govts have a dem majority. Lots of outdoor activities and weather isn’t the worst.

That being said, I spent most of my life in Oregon and would strongly encourage everyone to look into that state. It is far from perfect, but given where things seem to be going on several different fronts it would be a great longterm investment to jump in sooner rather than later.

If you can survive snow or at best become avid skiers/snowboarders/snowmobilers, Central New York is affordable, easy access to the Adirondacks, quick trip down to NYC, great food, etc.

Fair warning is NY taxes are high, but infrastructure is decent and programs are being invested in.

Rochester, Syracuse or Utica/Rome have opportunities and are growing. Each have an AHL team and Rochester/Syracuse have Triple-A baseball teams.

I go to Detroit relatively often - have friends that live in Troy - always have a good time there.

I definitely had a very different perception of the city before spending significant time there.

It's literally impossible to buy a house in LA with current demand - also I would say part of the problem from what you experienced is the city (LA specific not sure where you're at) basically just stopped doing anything for 2 years.

I have to pull teeth and apply political pressure to get permits through that used to be OTC.

Never been to Canada at all, that’s just where my wife’s company is based out of and if we moved there it would actually be a promotion for her. I know they’re moving a lot here to the Houston HQ, but that’s still where the main home office is. Houston isn’t bad, it’s just unfortunately in Texas. Houston as a city is liberal, it’s all the chud areas that surround it and still being under King Abbott’s rule

feel like this describes the majority of urban areas now. Living in proximity to diverse others makes you less likely to be a shithead. But lib policies create plenty of problems too eg homelessness, gentrification, etc. There really is no selective avoidance of nasty byproducts of capitalism in this country.

What experience do you have in CNY? Ithaca is the only spot I would recommend for anyone looking for a leftist safe haven. Syracuse, Utica, and most of all Rochester have serious crime problems that aren’t getting better, and like OH, MI, and PA the politics in the region are a blend of centrist rural Dem and populist right wing.

Been on the central coast of CA for six years now and love it. San Luis Obispo is amazing and very liberal. Really pricey but you can find decent cost of living (for California) in north county like Paso Robles/ Atascadero or south county like Grover Beach/ Nipomo. Still chuds around here due to old school ag community but gets bluer every day as people move in from LA and the Bay Area.

It’s been like 5 years since I lived in Denver metro but from my experience there are 3 things in CO Spings: military, evangelicals, and gangs.

As far as CO as a whole, Denver/Boulder/Aurora makes up such a high percentage of the pop that the state as a whole is blue, but outside of that it’s very, very red. Reminder that the western slope is Boebert’s district.

Cambria is cool. Being able to live in the woods but be on the ocean is pretty unique. We do the lights festival there every Xmas.
Thats where I live. Don’t have the best food/ entertainment options but we have a couple hundred wineries within 30 minutes, 20 minutes to San Luis Obispo or Paso Robles for good dining options and 20 minutes to Morro Bay/ Cayucos for the ocean. Tons of great hiking/mountain biking too. Lots of young families moving here and downtown is transforming because of that.
