Had the strangest thing happen to me yesterday. We are about to gut our kitchen and there is one window we were considering replacing. The main complaint was a half oval piece of decorative stain glass that was the upper 10% of the window. Got a quote for a replacement and it was several months and 4,000 for the window and the install. I started looking closer and figured if I could get the decorative molding around it out I could probably just replace it with traditional glass. Get up there and get the framing off to realize that it is purely decorative and remaining trim looks good and matches. Just needs some paint and everything will look pretty good. I am living in bizarro world where the further I got into the project the cheaper it was and less work I had to do. I’m definitely going to find black mold behind the drywall now.

Yeah thoughts and prayers when you remove the trim and realize it held your entire house together.

just bought a new house and I’m really dumb but I’m trying to hang a big heavy mirror is my daughters room and I guess the walls are plaster or concrete? anyone deal with this? my first house was all drywall so I’m not sure how to deal with something solid like this. I think it has to be plaster but I screwed in a half inch and it was still solid. going to drill tonight.

Is your house a high rise apartment or old prison? If not, you can probably rule out exposed concrete as the material. I don’t know what you were screwing in but if you were making progress that’s another big clue.

Go to the hardware store and ask one of the workers to show you what they have for anchors. You’ll need the weight that you intend to hang to make the best choice.

I was screwing a 100 lbs toggle anchor in and making some progress until the metal part snapped in half. probably made it about a half inch. my guess is it's 1" thick plaster. bought some heavy duty hollow wall anchors and going to give it another shot.

Water heater (from 2003) was so calcified it started leaking from the top. First quote was $1775. Second quote was $1950. Went with the $1950 because the dude was honest and I didn’t feel like dealing with plumbing companies anymore.

Noticed there was a hole in one of our crawl space vents. Opened up the access area and a bunch of insulation was ripped out. Guy comes out and goes into the crawl space, we don’t even have vapor barrier down in most of the area.

$3500 to redo all covers on the vents, remove the torn out insulation, and lay vapor barrier. I love spending money on things I’ll never see/obviously notice.

Has anyone had solar window tint installed on their home windows? Pro's/Con's?

I have about 17 windows and 1 glass backdoor that I want to be done. Fielding quotes now.

Solar in general for homeowners is a scam. It will take 40+ years to get your money back and this assumes the panels last that long (they won't)

good luck when your solar panels are connected to the main grid instead of just your own home. Hence the scam that is solar panels.

Surely the time horizon is shortening for solar rapidly.

But at the same time, someone is going door to door almost 1x a week in my neighborhood peddling them, so there must still be big margins on them.

These fucking companies prey on the lower class. Convincing people to sign 30 year loans with insane interest rates for 30k worth of solar panels on a roof that's worth at most 15k and a home worth at most 150k.

Meanwhile the company gets paid from the homeowner and gets a fat rebate from FPL for installing the panels. It's gross.

Water pressure regulator broke. Home warranty company sent a plumber out who confirmed that. A new one is covered by the home warranty. However, the plumber says he has to do a "modification to the pipe" to make it work for some reason. And, wouldn't you know it, that part isn't covered by the home warranty!

1st estimate for window tint is around $1300.

Only downside is you can still see in at night if we have lights on in the house.

But, very reasonable pricing if you have direct sunlight hitting windows and probably increasing the temp in those rooms.

Anyone use these for Japanese beetles. No lie in 1 week I’ve emptied this bag 4 times with 100’s each time at least two handfuls. I feel like I’m just attracting them from all over and should stop. My yard was bad but no way did I think there would be that many.

Replacing a dummy switch with a smart one for fan/light. That single switch controls on/off for both light and fan which I'm fine with. I have white neutral wires bundled with a wire nut, as well as copper grounds with wire nut. Connected to the switch I have 3 black wires one on the top two on the bottom and I am not sure what to do? The two blacks on the bottom to one black on the smart switch and then the remaining black to the other?

The back side of the switch will have + or - for positive/negative. Then the new switch should have wiring diagram for what pwr supply you have

Any time someone asks “how do I wire this,” my response is always “call someone that knows how to come and do it. If they are willing to teach you, that is a bonus.”

You don’t simply dabble in wiring your house unless you know what you are doing.

It's actually pretty straight forward. The two wires on the bottom of your old switch are your hot wires. One of those wires is bringing power in, the other wire is bringing power somewhere else. All you need to do is put them in a pigtail with your line side wire in the smart switch. You'll take the other black wire from the top of your old switch and connect that to your load wire in the smart switch, that's bring power to whatever your device is. Connect all the white wires together for your neutral and the green wire to the bare copper wires for a ground.

Actually thinking about it, I'm kind of assuming they don't have the switch opposite of what I'm saying. That top wire on your old switch could be the power and the bottom two wires could be going to the fan. Just get an electrical tester and figure out which black wire is bringing power in.
