You have no idea the bullets IT takes for you when having to talk with companies that outsource their tech support to other countries.
I try to go in a little (30-45 mins) early to get stuff done without interruption. Other people come in early as well, but they do it to talk about their weekends and other stuff I don't care about.
And if this was a one-off order, not through a major vendor that you regularly use I have to imagine you can add about 30% to that.
Agreed. We have a few in house and the majority is outsourced. Having the local (US) lifelines is invaluable when you need things done.
I know some may like it, but I hate getting messages in teams and Skype. My email is up and it’s on my phone. Why do I need these chat functions when instant access to email already exist?
i hate small talk at work. Let’s be friendly and polite, but I don’t want to hear about your two dogs for 30 minutes before we get into talking about what needs to be done at work
It’s a joke in my family that at gatherings when someone asks me what I do for work one of my brothers or sisters will say “nobody knows” I told my dad the other day that I was presenting to our group of summer interns about what my department does and he asked if I could send him the ppt because he wanted to know too I’ve worked here for 22 years
You know that saying “I just attended a meeting which should have been an email…”? I get emails all the time and immediately think, that should have been a teams/Skype message. Any short message which doesn’t necessarily need a response should be a teams chat in my opinion. Don’t junk up my inbox with some BS. Additionally when traveling it’s much easier to go respond to a short chat than it is to wade through a ton of emails to find the one I need to respond to.
Funny enough one of my best friends had his daughter write out a paragraph for him to use when people ask what she does. To her credit her work focuses on studying what happened moments after the “Big Bang” and so it’s pretty much over the head of everyone he explains it to. Most common response is usually “wow that’s awesome” and he moves on…
Teams was perfect for my group pre-Covid, and up through the first year of Covid, now its just out of control. I ran a report a few weeks back and I had 1700+ notifications from Teams in 1 week.
It’s hard to explain what I do to others. I usually just say I’m a liaison between the customers and engineers. A people person.
I usually say Im the guy who follows them around the internet, trying to get them to come back and buy the product they were looking at (digital marketing manager)
Mentioned itt, but the weirdest encounters I’ve had with engineers was food related. At a previous company I witnessed the following: -We’d have vendor lunches and the engineers, who weren’t invited, would come into an occupied conference room and grab a bunch of food and just walk out. -One got caught eating a lady from AP leftovers she brought from lunch and gave her a shoulder shrug and said “oh well I was hungry” when confronted. -We had a thanksgiving potluck and they all bum rushed the food before the event started and ate everything. They were triple plating stuff and wrapping it up to take home with them when all of us that made food didn’t get to eat at all. -When we’d have vendors or clients bring us lunch we’d set the leftovers out in the main break room and as sure as shit they’d smell it through the vents and bum rush it and take all of it. Not just empty it, but take the entire trays of food and scurry off like those sand things in Star Wars.
One of them that would always ask out every female employee had a gold chain necklace that probably fit him normally in 1974 but he had since gotten so fat that it was embedded in his neck like a tree growing around a chain link fence wire. There’s no we he could have taken it off and put it back on as it was only visible in flickers under his neck folds when he’d move when talking.
I hate this IT mf. I’ve been off for 2 days with Covid and we got a new person in our dept. Instead of getting her new licensing for software we use he just gave her my credentials so I guess he wouldn’t have to mess with getting new ones. So now I have to get all new shit and can’t work and who knows how long this will take. I swear to Satan if there was one person on this planet that I could fist fight it would be this guy.
Hoss I’ve read a lot of your posts now and I have to ask if you’ve ever considered if you are the asshole
Yes for our software programs that require licensing. He did it before to another coworker when I started. He gave me theirs instead of having to use a new one so he didn’t have to go through and set it up. Dude had been here like 3 years and his stuff just didn’t work one day and mine did.
