BMW is really struggling with the chip shortage. You're not getting screens, etc in their cars these days from what I've seen/read.

Somehow my car got everything even after we were told the backup camera wouldn't be available for months after we got the car.

BMW (and every other manufacturer) planned this long before the chip shortage. This is probably the third or fourth time they've proposed it with various features.

I believe it was them (or one of the other imports) who put Carplay behind a paywall. They may or may not have backtracked.

It's one thing to make software and evolving experiences like maps/infotainment//etc. pay as you go, but its rather insulting to do it for bona fide car functions like that or even worse, baseline mechanical components like heated seats.

Well, the whole putting a couple places up against each other thing worked pretty well first time trying. I’m sure I still lost, but I had them both dropping sale price / raising trade-in value until one gave up. Supposedly picking up my current car and dropping off the new one tomorrow

Edit: they’re coming to my house

The old Tahoes head gasket is blown. Going to hopefully pull the trigger on a new Tacoma this weekend. Any idea if dealerships will give you a loaner car to drive if they end up having to order the new vehicle?

Two cents, I would hold that question until you’ve settled on a price for another vehicle. I’d also play coy about your current vehicle being out of commission. If they sense you’re desperate for a vehicle, they will take advantage of that. If they ask if you have a trade just tell them you’re considering private sale to a family member or something.

What year Tahoe? Is it in good shape? You might try your luck getting it fixed and selling it. Stuff like GMT400s go for insane money now.

My Kia Optima with a 165,000 miles ate shit. Mechanic said the engine seized up and is in need of a full replacement. The best they could find was a motor with 70,000 miles already on it for $5,000. Fuck.

I was hoping to wait a year and get something electric but now it looks like my hand is forced to get something sooner. Sucks to choose between a nice car now to keep indefinitely or buy something cheaper used then upgrade in a year when my finances are hopefully in a better spot.

I'm pretty sure there's a class action on that car and Sonatas. You should get a free motor.

That sucks. I have 172,000 on mine. Planning on trading it in before the end of the year.

I'd get something to get by bc the used car market is going to flip in a few months.

That's not the way you want to do it. Go to the dealer and refuse to leave until you satisfy the criteria. I mean, my Hyundai had 200k on it and ran fine. Plus, I have a friend who had one of these. He took it in (prior to the class action) and it was replaced no questions asked. The turbo was an issue; apparently they didn't have any, so he had a loaner for a few month.

Well it’s kind of a long story, but my car is 70 miles from the closest Kia dealership and about 600 miles from me. I’m very open to suggestions but I think I need to verify a few things before trying to have it towed anywhere.

Bought a 2016 BMW 535i a few weeks ago from a private seller and got a killer deal on it.

48k miles, M sport package, massage and vented seats, heads up display. Already threw a tune on it and did some minor suspension upgrades to eliminate body roll. Has turned into a nice sport sedan. Next up is wheels, the previous owner had the OEM wheels powdercoated black and I think it looks terrible.

Not a lot of options otherwise with the 5 series... or any US BMW in general.

I used BootMod3 tune and installed it myself to Stage 1. Once I get an intercooler and downpipes I will go Stage 2 and it should be producing about 410+ hp. I might do a transmission tune which will make the car much more responsive.

As of now, it's an entirely different car in Sport mode as opposed to Comfort mode.

Going to try and trade my wife’s 2018 Ford Edge in. Has 62k miles on it but it is on good shape and paid off. Need something bigger with a 3rd row with another baby coming next month. She is set on an explorer. Worth it? Don’t think I can convince her to go the mini van route yet.

I think the majority opinion would be that there are a number of better options than an Explorer at that price point.

    List would include:
Telluride (if you can find one)
    Palisade
    CX-9
    Maybe Highlander

Explorers are awful compared to most of that market. I wanted to order a 23 Palisade but couldn't wait that long so we settled with a 19 Atlas with 20k miles (had an Atlas for a loaner a couple times and loved it)

Traded in my wife's 2015 explorer with 130k miles this summer. It was a pos but still got 13k for it.

You really need to try and get her to test drive an odyssey or comparable minivan. It's a game changer.

If you are set on an SUV the palisade/teluride/grand Cherokee seem to be best on the market.

Going to look at a large suv today for my wife with baby #3 coming (she refuses to get a minivan). Large suvs are stupid expensive. I guess the only saving grace is her 2019 pilot elite is still work what we bought it for new.

You know what vehicle is 40,000 dollars cheaper than a large suv and specifically designed for large families? A minivan.

If her reason for refusing to get a minivan in any involves it not being cool, i have some bad news for her.

Spending 30k dollars more on a less functional family mover vehicle just to "look cooler" is bonkers. You don't look any cooler in your Suburban or Highlander than you would in an Honda Odyssey. Everyone knows you are just schlepping kids around in any of those vehicles.

The wife and I wanted a hatch with more space for home projects/camping/a potential start for our family, so we just put a deposit down on a CX-50 at sticker with no dealer add ons. Feeling pretty good about that in this market, especially considering the crazy value I got trading in my Mazda6.

But, If I ever feel like I need a third row, you bet your ass I'm getting a minivan.

We just got the Timberline after road tripping around Texas and enjoying my mom’s Explorer over Christmas. Would have preferred a Grand Cherokee L, but that and the Telluride are considerably more with similar options. Coming from a Forester, the Ascent was also very much in the running, but even my wife was like “that’s too much of a mom ride for me.” Just leasing because I wasn’t all in on the decision, especially due to the fact that it looks like a police interceptor but the price was nice

it says she refuses to get a minivan.

    It didn't say why.

Presumably its because minivans aren't cool, but that's an insanely dumb reason to incinerate an entire college tuitions worth of money.

I feel like once you're on kid 3 you need to let go of any idea of being cool anymore and embrace it.

Mini Vans are so bad ass, not wanting one if you have more than 2 kids is lunacy and makes your life demonstrably harder
