Tons of Americans are languishing in our criminal justice system for nonviolent drug offenses. There's an entire hundreds of billion dollars industry centered around locking up people for stupid shit and keeping them there indefinitely in conditions that are every bit as bad as prisons in other shithole countries like Russia. Hell there's probably a measurable number of Russian citizens that are locked up in this country for similar sentences for shit like coke and e.

I agree the charges or sentencing is a little much but why should our views or opinions on Russian law matter to them. Do we listen to other countries when deciding on new laws or punishments? I’m not a fan of hers but she broke some other countries laws, not ours. You also better believe if I’m traveling outside of the US with drugs I should know the ramifications it could have. Would you travel to Afghanistan right now and show up woth a gun and your carry permit and expect to be treated like you would here? I wouldn’t.

This is tricky, especially as she has a record of abuse here. THere aren't any easy answers, even though they are clearly exploiting that point to get the exchange.

I agree that the punishment is severe by our standards but it’s far from the worst in the world. I’ve been in some of these countries and they don’t play at all.

She fucked up, got a raw deal and didn't deserve this harsh of a punishment but that should influence nothing in terms of why she should get special treatment from the US government even if she's a beloved figure here. I’ve told them numerous times that it doesn’t make sense to print your cage code on munitions. Just doesn’t make sense from a security perspective.
