So the first delay was 1.5 hours sitting on the tarmac. Made me miss my connect. Then in the air service was alright. Q suite was nice. The new delta one suite I felt was bigger than the Q suite. Movie selection was meh, Wi-Fi was really choppy.

we land in Doha and they had someone waiting for all the first class people to help them get their flights rebooked. But she said they were closing the door in 5 minutes for my original flight. There was like 5 of us and they couldn’t just keep it open for 10 mins for us to get there.

then my new flight, 6 hours later, was delayed another 2 hours. Very disorganized and no communication what was going on. Was a circuis. Now one of my bags didn’t make it

Just got to my hotel. 9 hours late of original. Total from door to door 32 hours

I did this back in May for our trip we leave on in two weeks. Happy to help... was a slog indeed. Feel free to PM me and we can talk there. I was able to book about $25k worth of flights for $3500 + points but legit spent 10-15 hours of time researching it. Couple thoughts below

    1. I used SeatSpy which I found to be the best of all the award tools out there. That said, it only works for 10-12 airlines & only direct flights, so will be tougher unless you are in a major hub. I was able to use it to hunt for routes that may have good availability on non-directs and spot checked via that airline directly. Happy to share my login with you

    2. The hardest leg will be US > Africa, but if you are going to multiple spots (e.g. South Africa to Kenya) you can def find availability easier on those routes, or your return flight back from a Europe/Middle East hub. I booked JNB > LHR for like 65k on Virgin Atlantic, & VCE > LAX (via CDG) for 70k, and then used whatever I had left on Chase to pay the majority of the LAX > CPT flight. We luckily had flexibility on dates, and a significant window to travel which helped, but even still we have some weird extra days in Joburg & London simply due to where I could find availability

    3. Don't try to book everything in sequential order. I found the JNB > LHR flight and sort of built around that since I knew it was my best shot getting to Europe from SA. Figured the rest out from there but burned like 10 hours trying to find LAX > Africa flight that worked

    4. We originally were flying LAX > CPT (via AMS) on KLM which would have been a brutal 24 hours in the air, but due to a 5 hour schedule change I was able to get Chase to bump us to the brand new ATL > CPT route (and best D1 suite) for no cost. Was like $7500 more than the flight we'd booked & saves us 6 hours in the air. V excited.

That's awesome, man. Congrats and enjoy your trip. If I pm you, but no hurt feelings if you ignore while on the road. Will look into SeatSpy.

My fiancée told me today that she actually got way more time off on the back end, so lots of my stress over shoehorning a 10 day itinerary into a set window has been relieved, though I'm sure more stresses will arise.

Still curious if anybody has any Ethiopia experience. Can see responses going many directions, but if any of them are positive, I'd be down to give it a try (TBD if I can talk my fiancée into it).

What's your ideal plan start to finish?

    What's your home airport?

I believe Ethiopian is one of the better intra-Africa airlines to fly but I wouldn't choose to fly it long-haul unless it was my only option, and then I would only do that biz class (they have a decent-to-good product). Let me know on the above and I can recco a couple other creative solutions

I only fly coach because I'm poor, but Ethiopian airlines is very legit - they're one of the best African airlines, international or domestic. I chose them for my first trip to Africa because, at the time, they were one of the carriers that did direct US - Africa without a layover in Europe.

Ethiopia is amazing, but not at all what you want for a honeymoon. Could maybe find a short-ish flight into Addis and then get to Nairobe easily, tho.

looking at a trip to Madagascar this year but true to the meme it’s very hard to get there. Best option I’ve found so far is Ethiopian. Otherwise it’s their local airline which looks extremely sketchy. I’d have thought South African, Emirates, or some airline like that would have flights but apparently

I'm sure because Cabo is gringo central, but flights from Seattle - Cabo on Alaska or Delta are usually less than $200 one-way. For a 4 hour flight it's a no-brainer.

It will be my entry point into Mexico for the foreseeable future. And I'll always need to have quick access to WA, another reason I'm exploring Todos Santos as a semi-permanent location.

That's nice. Everything from ATL -> Central America has been expensive since mid 2022. I think I got into Liberia, CR for around 600 end of '21. December it was ~1,000. Puerto Vallarta was like 750. San Salvador was 750 coach/950 1st class.

I looked into some flights to Puerto Escondido/Oaxaca and it was $1000

It's all on points... I travel a ton for work and am generally obsessed with maximizing my points on every purchase so I can do things like that. I've maybe bought a biz class ticket at face value 1-2 times in my life and even then I shopped hard for a deal (that I later regretted while sitting on a 6 hour layover in Vancouver).

That coupled with strictly boutique hotels on vacation helps me maximize value on trips.

I have a sweet Airbnb for 2 months starting in early Feb. What'sApp'd the lady and she agreed to do it off Airbnb's platform, saved me over a grand in taxes + fees. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/8738571

Airport we're departing from is SLC, airport to return to is AUS (but IAH could work too).

Ideal plan is (a) start in Kigali (July 18 or 19) - since not a lot of flights, could fly to Nairobi, get acclimated for a day and then fly over to Kigali, (b) let a travel agent do their thing to get us around for Gorilla trekking/Masai Mara/Zanzibar trip and (c) depart on August 2 or 3 from Nairobi/Dar/Wherever makes the most sense between points/flights/$.

Between steps (b) and (c), I think we'll either check out a beach in Kenya or explore Nairobi some, depending on time and what the BFF wants to do.

For getting to the first step, we'd like to take Emirates business class and do a stopover in Dubai. We could do that on the return and just fly to IAH, but seems like the energy for it will be on the way out. For the return, pretty agnostic as long as it's in business class and not a 48 hour trip home (unless a cool stopover).

Ok got it. Not sure the Emirates flight on the way there makes sense as you are stopping 2x at minimum SLC>??>Dubai>??. I would recommend doing that the way back as you can fly direct into IAD via Dubai and that flight is much easier to figure out as most East Africa cities can get you to Dubai direct.

A few things I found that may help you on the way there...

    1. July 19th SLC > Nairobi (via 6hr stop in AM) for 187k points each on KLM. KLM metal to AMS, Kenya Airlines metal to Nairobi. All business. Arrive 6am the morning of the 21st

    2. July 16th SLC > BRU (via AMS) for 80k points + $200. The AMS>BRU leg is actually done by train departing from Schipol and is 1.5hr in a first class cabin. Actually would be kind of nice. From there you can fly direct to Kigali for like $750 economy on Air Brussels. Struggling to find a points flight for that BUT at least it's a decent airline vs. economy on a 3rd tier African operator. If you dig in you may be able to find award availability but I can't get United to serve me the direct flight, only weird connecting.

    3. The best US to Africa flight I can find those dates (July 18) in business is actually IAD > Lagos, Nigeria for 70k United miles. Pretty good deal honestly but you'd have to find the positioning flight from SLC. The Lagos > Kigali flight is like 4 hours and $500, so may be a decent option to dig into.

Hope this helps. Happy to take a look at the return leg as you piece it together more!

This is awesome. Thanks a ton. I’ll let you know as things develop.

We’re leaving the dog in Houston, so you’re probably right about Emirates making more sense on the way back and we can do NBO to Dubai to IAH. That prob kills the Dubai stopover, but I’m more excited about that than the BFF is. My only downside thought on doing the fanciest flight on the way back is depleted energy, but that’s a pretty dumb concern (still one my future wife has voiced).

Central Africa is probably the hardest place to get to from the US, and from SLC it's even tougher. I would find the path of least resistance for sure.

Not sure how much time you've put into the planning at this point, but ~12 days to do Uganda / Masai Mara / Zanzibar is a lot of tricky logistics. Not easy places to get in & out of. Could make life a lot easier for you to do Kenya/Tanzania Safari + Zanzibar beach and cut down on the transit time.

Best of luck to you, it'll be an incredible trip no matter what. Will share my notes when we get back!

OK so I am trying to plan a safari trip to Africa for this October. I have never been to Africa and just starting my planning about two days ago so forgive me if my questions are ignorant, I just have never started planning a trip in the region before. A few starters:

-Probably will be a 15-17 day trip. I am for sure doing Cape Town but am open to some combination of a safari, beach, Victoria Falls location as add-ons. The answers to the following questions will help me work all of that out...

-When it comes to a safari, it seems like 3 parks I am considering that all seem very good are Krueger, Masai Mara, and Serengeti. I know time of year is important for these parks, and again I'm going in October. Is one vastly superior to the others? I know Masai Mara and Serengeti are somewhat close to each other- would it be overkill or redundant to do both of those, and leave out Kreuger? Would it be extremely overkill to do all 3? If you've visited here, and you liked where you stayed, can you let me know where you stayed? I doubt my companion is going to enjoy sleeping in a tent in this particular location so maybe a hotel that offers a safari would be the best bet (though open to either if a tent is the best option). It seems like it's a 7 hour direct flight from Cape Town to Nairobi so it'd likely need to be a pretty decent upgrade to want to do that, but then again we do have the time so maybe I would be down for it.

-With Victoria Falls, what is the main differences between the Zimbabwe side vs. the Zambia side? I know almost nothing about Victoria falls, but perhaps due to the political situation in Zimbabwe that the Zambia side is more popular? No idea just intuition on that statement. For those who have been, which side would you recommend?

-If I want to loop in some kind of beach aspect to the trip, how do the beaches of South Africa (Paternoster, or perhaps some other location?) compare to Zanzibar, Kenya (Diani looks very nice), or the Seychelles? The Seychelles seems great but may be logistically difficult to fit in on this particular trip. But I had no idea how nice the beaches were in any of those areas and how logistically easy they are to get to.

Couple of questions to help give you solid feedback..
    - Are you balling out? Doing this on a budget? No specifics but some directional guidance as certain parks/regions are simply more expensive to really do it right
    - What do you want to see/experience? Just want to see the Big5 regardless of where? Any specific animal or event (like Great Migration, Calving season, etc)?
    - Are there any non-negotiables? Air conditioning, tents vs lodges, concerns with Malaria, etc?

I think Go2Africa is a great starting point for trying to back into the right place to go for specific months: https://www.go2africa.com/when-to-travel/october & also Yellow Zebra Safari: https://yellowzebrasafaris.com/us/inspiration/when-to-go/october/ . If you are not going on a tight budget, you can find a good Safari operator like YZ or many others to handle the logistics for you. You'll end up paying a 5-20% premium depending on a number of factors but they are amazing when it comes to bush flights, car transfers, getting special treatment, etc

&Beyond operates amazing lodges across the region and offer Safari + Beach packages which you can explore or simply use as inspiration. I found a lot of success looking at marketed "Honeymoon" packages for our trip and then finding the specific lodges & experiences I wanted to do within the routing.

As for connecting parks/experiences in one trip, it's my personal preference to keep things as tight as possible and limit long intra-trip flights. Some groupings that offer enough diversity of game & terrain would be
    - South Africa (Cape Town, Kruger, and either Phinda Vlei OR Madikwe)
    - South Africa + Namibia (the latter can be pricey but supposed to be incredible)
    - South Africa + Botswana
    - Any combo of Kenya/Tanzania/Rwanda (latter for Gorilla treking)

Southern Africa is starting to heat up in October so if you are worried about temps, you're better off looking at Serengeti & Masai Mara for October.

Happy to help just PM me anytime

Hey- thanks so much for the help. No idea what the rate for balling out would be but looking to keep nightly expenses under $500-600 for lodging on the safari portion (less for Cape Town, probably but I haven’t looked yet), hopefully that will include a safari or game drive or something but I have envisioned a hotel that also offers that I suppose. No idea how feasible that is but definitely do not care to do the 2k a night thing I have seen some places. Need AC and, since you asks, I would not like to contract malaria or anything like that if possible haha.

I'd love to see the Big 5 and the Great Migration, but I think the latter is winding down in October.

Thanks for your info, very helpful.

I can only speak to South Africa and Krueger, but a few random thoughts:
    • If you're for sure doing Cape Town, I'd only focus on one park/safari. Crossing borders will be an all-day affair and probably pricey. If you're set on Cape Town I'd keep it domestic and do Krueger. I also remember most flights from US/Europe arrive in Jo-burg, so could land there and knock out Krueger and/or Victoria Falls before going to chill in Cape
    • Shameless plug again for my safari outfit, cannot recommend enough: https://www.nhongosafaris.com/
    • I have not been to Victoria but a co-worker went years ago and raved about it.
    • If you're set on beaches I'd check out Mozambique. Also world-class diving, if you're into that.
    • One rec I haven't seen listed that some friends did - The Garden Route in SA - 124 mile stretch from Cape Town east along the coast you can safely road trip: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/article/partner-content-ultimate-road-trip-garden-route
    • If you're with your partner, would absolutely suggest getting a place way down on the peninsula for 2-3 nights if you can fit it in. There are some super cool rentals and the scenery is unreal.
    • I believe it's also logistically easier to get from US to Nairobi, so you could fly straight into there, do your adventure stuff, and then fly to Cape Town without backtracking.
    Have fun dude!

There’s been a lot of good advice on safaris in the posts above. If you’re going the southern African route, I would insist on adding a trip to Victoria Falls. You won’t be disappointed. I was in the Peace Corps when I went and was prohibited from going to Zimbabwe (due to some unrest going on there at the time) so I did the Zambia side. It was great.

Mozambique would be a good option for beaches. I stayed at a hostel in Durban and enjoyed the warmer waters there too.
