We found out Indigo had a tumor growing on her urethra at the base where it meets the bladder. After rounds chemo we were told her life expectancy was 6-8 months. It's been 2 years but the inevitable happened and she started having trouble urinating. Today she could barely go and we had to make the hardest decision I've ever had to make and it hurts. Have a drink for Indigo, and for me, tonight. She was the best damn dog.

Anyone have any tips for a cut paw? Sully cut his paw on an oyster bed in a creek this weekend. It's a small cut on the side of his back foot. Don't think he's in any pain, but he just starts bleeding everywhere when he walks around. We've tried liquid bandage and wrapping it in gauze but it just splits open. Cut is probably <1" long and not deep at all. He's got a ton of energy and is very active so keeping him off his feet is going to be a pain in the ass.

Flush with peroxide, Pack it with cornstarch and wrap it with vet wrap. It won't take long to scab over if you can keep him off it even for an hour or two. Make sure he doesn't eat the wrap if possible. Also, he'll lick it back open and you may have to repeat the wrapping.

Ended up taking him to the vet asking if we needed antibiotics because of how dirty the water is here. Vet said the cut wasn’t deep enough and didn’t even really need to be wrapped.

Trying to keep this fool off his feet is a losing battle. Now he’s pouting because he’s not able to play.

Meet Meyer, he's had a rough week. He was in foster care but has now returned to the shelter life. He nearly bit me in the face today while putting his harness on. Unfortunately this got him a color change, yellow to red. He's not an aggressive dog, he's scared. I have no doubt he'd flourish in the right setting. If you're local he'd love to foster with you.

Has anyone ever done both back legs ACL surgeries at once? Layla has both torn, would cost $7000-$7600 for the surgery. My main concern is that I do the surgery and then she tears the front because of the weight and now I am looking at $15,000 before its all said and done.

    Would love some advice.

I did both at the same time on my dog a couple of years ago. I assume that you're doing the TPLO? We had to keep him kenneled for 6-8 weeks where he couldn't even stand up and move around until the bones healed, and when we did let him up to go out to relieve himself we carried his rear end with a sling under his belly. He could stand/squat to do his business but then the sling went back under. They did give us sedatives to keep him settled down so he didn't try to get up too much and that helped although you could tell he hated it. It worked out just fine for us. Just don't mess around when it comes time to rehab because the repaired joints won't have all the range of motion when the dog can get back on it's feet fully.

Edit: 1. That is a great price. I paid just short of $10,000 for both.
    2. The shoulder thing is definitely something to watch. My guy leaned too much on the front shoulders and does have a limp after running/playing hard. The vet says his shoulder is structurally sound and can't find any damage but he does show some discomfort.

Thanks for the response and yes TPLO. She's a big girl so I'm worried she'll tear something else afterwards, but I work remote so I should be able to keep her under control all day. Just a lot of money to spend on a dog, but she’s 1.5 years old and the 2 other options are: do nothing or euthanize and neither of those sit well with me.

That was my exact dilemma as well. Young dog that tore both ACL within a few weeks of each other. He was way too young to put down and there was no way I wasn't going to do anything. He's happy and completely mobile now. He is a big guy, 70# pitty, but he's recovered nicely though I watch him like a hawk when he's playing because there isn't anything else to do if he blows the knees again.

Please don’t euthanize your dog for torn ACLs. If you can’t or won’t pay for it, try to give her to a non-kill rescue.

We lost both of our dogs within 6 months of each other. Our Lola was in kidney disease and given 6 weeks to live. We extended her life by 2 very happy years with daily fluid therapy.

Our Obi man passed in January unexpectedly. He was diagnosed with pancreatitis but when it wasn’t clearing up we ended up at an emergency vet where we learned cancer had overtaken his liver. He was also in heart failure as a result. We were absolutely gutted.

We rescued Lola as a puppy and she lived to 12. We aren’t sure how old Obi was, but we think around 13.

This weekend we went to a dog festival in Charlotte because we’re considering getting another one and we thought interacting with so many dogs would be fun for our young kids.

They had a blast and we ended up finding and falling in love with a pup.

Meet Moose. Or teddy. Or Potter. Still deciding on the name.

Our vet recommended not doing both at once in part due to the lack of mobility issue you're alluding to. We had the more serious injury repaired first and circled back three months later to do the other. She lived the crate life for a while, and we were diligent about the physical therapy. She was more or less normal about seven months after the first surgery.

Congrats man, beautiful pup, sorry you had to go through so much to get to that point.
Was it a rescue pup or from a breeder?
No judgment, just always curious, the hazard of being in rescue.
My Pomskie is named Teddy (full name Theodore Leonard) so I vote for that

Thanks, buddy. We’ve always rescued dogs, but we decided to go with a breeder this time. We weren’t planning for that, but when we saw these dogs, we fell in love and felt one would be a great fit for our family.

Wish I woulda got my old girl a buddy back sooner. At nights he does annoy the fuck out of her trying to play. I'm just waiting for her to be on her back and launch him across the room with her hind legs. It is funny to see cause we got her when she was 1 and our cavalier was ~6 and she annoyed the shit out of him and now she's 7 dealing with the young buck.

I've surprisingly never really participated in this thread but my beloved Lucy is old af. Since being potty trained has only used the bathroom in house once and that was only bc she was on an antibiotic. Until last 6 months and now shits all over herself and house, falls down all the time and sleeps all day. Maybe 5 minutes a day of walking around is all we can get her to do. She's miserable 95% of time but my wife can't let go, this sucks so bad. Hope she dies in her sleep soon :(

Love on your puppers while you can

First of all my condolences blind dog. Flash gave me a scare a couple weeks ago. She wasn’t eating and having accidents all over the place . I started to cry in the car with my wife and all I could say is “I’m not ready”. Luckily, she is doing better. Feel like that last year or so it has been borrowed time. She’ll be 7 in a couple months and that’s not nearly enough.

On a different note how often do you guys brush your doggos teeth? I’m doing it once a day right now but don’t know if that’s too little or too much. TIA

id imagine once a day is more than 99.9% of dog owners.

I try to do it once a week, but probably am closer to once every 2-3 weeks. Usually when I clip his nails. Not one of his favorite days

Really sorry man, there's no worse feeling.
Doing the right thing at the end and letting them go when they are miserable is the kindest act you can ever do for them, but also the hardest.
I hope your wife comes around soon, I feel horrible for all of you, but there will be better days ahead when you'll only remember everything she gave you and the love you gave her.

When ours was at the end with heart disease my wife expressed to our vet her desire for him to pass peacefully at home. Doc said him passing at home would likely be the result of his lungs filling with water and essentially internally drowning. Still was so tough but it took that for my wife to finally agree that it was time to do it peacefully…and now Im crying at the gym.
