Adding on to this. I grew up with both parents as educators, and now I work in education. All of the schools I've been at, except one, have been in extremely poor rural areas. Growing up, Thanksgiving meal was usually my mom, dad, siblings, and like 10 or 12 people that he coached. 2 of my friends would come and live at the house on and off, because of things going on at home or just the fact that the parents couldn't afford to take care of them. There were constantly people coming over to "play the game" but really it's where they knew they could come to get food. I usually bring extra food for lunch or try to keep snacks with me, as there are plenty of students that ask for food throughout the day. These kids have no clue when their next meal outside of a school building will be. I've also done summer programs where we feed our players lunch and breakfast. It was all prepackaged lunchroom type food, so it really wasn't that great. Still, there would be kids that just open their backpack and start loading it up with stuff to take home. Had a player last season tell me that he was going to give the PB&J's that he was stuffing in his backpack to his siblings that night. Uncrustable PB&J's for dinner. I'm a big believer in every child getting free meals at school, whether they qualify for it or not. I think schools should be allowed to give out the leftovers from that day to anyone that wants to take it home. Unfortunately, there are pretty strict rules about getting a second plate of free food or taking home extra. It's depressing, and most schools aren't willing to risk the funding by overserving. It's just so fucking infuriating watching people literally ruin kids lives without a care in the world. I seriously wish we could bring the [redacted] back so we could start [redacting] these extremists.
