Well a little recap from my round on Monday on the Big Island of Hawaii. Now I've been a muni guy for most of my life, occasionally getting invited to play CC once in a while. I haven't played many famous courses around the country, but I definitely have a bucket list of courses I'd like to play over the next 20ish years.

This course Mauna Lani South was the best course I have ever played. Amazing service the moment we walked into the clubhouse. The round was $320, which included the rental clubs. Played from the mid-tees at roughly 6,100 yardage, mainly because I wanted to enjoy the round, have some opportunities to hit the greens in two on the par 5's and hopefully make a birdie or two. I have never played a course before with Lava rocks. I have played a lot of desert golf, but this was a whole different thing. 0 chance of hitting out of the Lava or even really recovering your ball. You would not want to slip on that lava as it would cut you up badly, so Lava was the equivalent to water. The course was an excellent design with the grass flowing through the lava along with some man-made lakes. The place overall was Mint tee to green, but surprisingly the greens were not as fast as I would have anticipated. Also, the rough was tough to hit out of. Thick grass, I am used to heavy rough playing in Michigan, but this was a whole different thing.

Played a set of the TaylorMade irons and woods and driver. Loved the clubs, though the driver was too spinny to me and not my loft preference. Shot a 79, with no birdies, just grinding out pars. 3-4 holes right on the ocean that had postcard-type views. Clear day with barely a cloud in the sky and you could see Maui in the distance. Hole 7 was amazing and hole 15 was the Money hole, and I parred both of them.

Had a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole and left 2 inches short, dead center. Happy with breaking 80 and enjoyed every second of the round. Capped it off with a delicious margarita at the beautiful clubhouse looking over a couple of holes with the ocean just beyond.

Small Side Story: So I am the furthest from "that guy" who believes in ghosts, spirits, or weird voodoo shit. This was a very interesting thing that happened that still has my head spinning a bit. The 4th hole was a long par 5 and I was about 137 out hitting my 3rd shot. It was into the wind with probably 10-15 yards of hurt. I decided to hit a 3-quarter knockdown 8 iron. Water to the left traps on the right. I pulled my shot and it headed directly to the water. My brother and I watched the ball splash into the water clear as day. I was playing a very unique ball the Taylor Made TP5 pix American Flag ball. A special ball that I have never really seen on the course as of yet. I have played and seen plenty of the orange versions that Rick Fowler plays with, but the American Flag version I would consider a rare ball. My brother and I walk up to the front of the green to find a spot for me to drop and we notice 6 balls sitting on the fringe of the green. A random assortment of balls, but one of the balls was a Taylor Made TP5 pic American Flag ball. I was playing a number 2 and this was a number 2 ball. Now I didn't have time to mark my ball up with some custom dot or marking, but it was the same ball and the same number from my sleeve. I looked at my brother and thought for a 2nd, maybe there is some strange system in the man-made lake that grabs the balls and spits them back on the green. We couldn't see any pumps or other devices that would put the balls on the grass. The 2some in front of us was at least a hole ahead and there was no one on the green obviously when I hit my 3rd shot. It was a very strange thing and it had my head spinning for the rest of the round. I ended up playing the ball where it lay and I didn't take a penalty stroke. I guess my 79 has an asterisk by it, but it was one of the stranger things I have experienced on a golf course.

In reality, it was probably a super rare coincidence that some other golfer earlier in the day played the same ball, just odd it was left on the fringe of the green. All in all an amazing experience, a great course and a perfect way to celebrate my 40th bday.

Here’s our format. 2 person team with 6 teams in the flight. 5 9-hole matches. You get 1 point for winning the hole, no points for halve, and -1 point for losing the hole. With this point system pretty much 3-4 teams were in contention on the last day in every flight. If we have 10 flights, 5 top flights go to a shootout on 3 holes and the lower 5 flights go to a shootout on 3 holes. Handicaps were in play and it was modified alternate shot. Both tee off then alternate shot based on which tee shot the team wants to play. Reset on every hole. 2 teams eliminated on 1st hole, 1 team eliminated on second hole, then 1 team advances on final hole to championship hole. The winner from each shootout group plays final hole with some format.

I hate the multiple 9 hole match with handicap format. My favorite and the most competitive one I’ve played in uses combined handicaps to flight it beforehand. 18 hole alternate shot day one, Calcutta that night (for second round score only), then 18 hole best ball the second day. Anyone from any flight can win the overall, but each flight pays the same (prize money, not Calcutta).

It eliminates dots. You can’t beat dots

I have not carded a round of par or better since 2017, largely because I just don't play as much as I used to. Decided last night that I was going to the course before the sun comes up this morning to get on the waiting list. Starter sent me out as a single (in a cart). I played through a twosome on the 3rd and didn't see anyone else until the 17th. (a foursome that teed off on #10)

Completed the round in 2:20. Drove it beautifully. After birdie on 14, I started to think 72 could happen. Really proud of my finishing effort but could not sink either of the two great looks for birdie on 16 and 17. Would've been a hoot to shoot par at 50 years old.

Came into 8 yesterday +3 (tripled #1 and doubled #2) and hit a really great hybrid down a super tight fairway to about 65 yards...and had a complete mental breakdown. Couldn't decide whether to run it up low or go high...end up needing four to get in from there. Then the meltdown got worse, penalty on the par 3 #9 and got in for a double. But still, couldn't be too mad sitting at 40 through the turn. Everything that could go wrong felt like it went wrong from there. Three putt par on #10 and didn't get a single par the rest of the way, completely blowing by chance at breaking 85 for the first time. What a cruel, cruel game.

Had several round recently around par. I’m thinking to myself I’m finally getting a consistent game and happy with where I’m at. Then yesterday I put up an 87. This game can humble you quickly. At least it helps balance out the handicap.

It’s no excuse, but I’m sure there’s very few old white country club members who want to give up a few days of their precious course for a women’s college tournament.

Played 9 yesterday but forgot I had taken my putter out of my bag. So I putted with a wedge. Putted about the same including an 8 footer for birdie. Not sure if I should be happy that I have a repeatable putter stroke or disturbed that it literally doesn’t matter because I’m actually not a good putter

My 15 year old bag is about done. I'm looking for a new one.

    - I walk at least half the time I play, so light is good. Don't need all the bells and whistles
    - I travel once a year for a guy's golf trip. I typically just rent clubs, but looking for a cheap/easy way to travel with my bag for the annual trip
    - Cheaper the better

    Any suggestions?
