I’m going to say this about Bolt. I like the guy. I still think he can get the job done here. He isn’t perfect by any means, but he is willing to admit mistakes and try to fix them. He completely flipped the roster last year, and it did result in more wins… That’s not the ideal case this year, but it’s progress, even if it’s just a little bit.

He absolutely has to get a new pitching coach asap. We’ll see what happens there, but my feeling is he won’t hold on to dead weight, so I imagine in the next few weeks we’ll hear some news about that. He’ll have to replace a couple of huge bats next year, so hopefully he can do that and get the pitching staff back to a strength and they will be back in regional contention. That’s the hope anyway. But of course the fuck us will always be around so I guess we’ll see.

So if I'm reading the thread right we might win the B1G in baseball but also miss the post-season somehow?

Perhaps the answer here is college baseball is silly so who cares. Let UC-Irvine win their 10th National championship or something

I’ve become bitter in Duloot cause my job sucks major ass (I have the entire arrowhead as a territory, St. Louis, cook, lake, parts of itasca, Carlton, pine counties), have a 16mo with no fam/friends within 2.5 hours of me, and we never get to spend time outside. We’re in the cities/norfield twice a month, at least. The wife took a job with delta and there’s a 80% chance she gets a MSP base. I said fuck it and put my 2 weeks in last week. No idea what I’m going to do outside of taking the summer off to spend with the cheighl, spend some time at the cabin in Lutsen and start to look for jobs in august. Getting the house on the market by the end of the week. Renting for a year, gonna buy another house next year and hope for the market to mellow out a bit.

Haven’t been following the baseball squad too closely but isn’t it likely Trev treats this like he did Frost and the end of 2021? Trev was behind the change in OC, will he do the same for the pitching coach? Or maybe Bolt is more of an adult than Frost and can make that decision himself.

SZD posted their Nebraska dead letters pod this morning. Listened to the first thirty minutes, really enjoying it so far. I kind of knew some of the history behind Husker football, but some of the details are really interesting. Example- students and even inmates in the state contributed money for the construction of Memorial stadium. Also the title 48 stuff was news to me.

Besides horrible coaching/developing/recruiting - the JUCO route probably hurt us just as much. In the 90s we were a combination of recruiting nationwide and a ton of partial/non-qualifiers. Those kids now go JUCO and end up in the SEC.

Yea they mentioned that Nebraska had 4 starters on one of their title teams that were partial/non-qualifiers and a couple others that played a good amount.

The other thing that I thought was really cool was the attitude a lot of Nebraska high schoolers (and probably across the country) had at that time- they dreamed of playing for the Huskers and would walk-on if they didn’t get a schollie. The pod host estimated that this provided between 15 to 20 additional scholarship level players. But now, those kids go to G5 and lower P5 (hello) programs.

That fandom and loyalty to a school, as an RU fan, is completely foreign to me and I am envious. And while it doesn’t exist to the same degree now, I think one of the reasons it’s easy for me to root for Nebraska is that genuine love for the school and program. That and some of my favorite posters on this board are Huskers. You guys have also been really welcoming in this thread and it’s appreciated.

Anywho, if any of you guys happen to give it a listen would love to hear your thoughts on the pod. GBR.

2 interesting what ifs as I listen:

    1. what if Nebraska stuck with the option and gradually moved towards a spread option instead of going the exact opposite route with the west coast offense.

    2. what if Pelini wasn’t such an asshole. Would they have kept him on and, after consistently winning 9 games/year, would he have eventually broken through.

Disclaimer: these are probably stupid questions but based on what little I know, I wondered

#1 - Imagine if DTO had Saban's football ego instead of turning to politics, dude retired at 60. Could have adapted to the changing game and given us 12 more years and banked on a Frank DUI between then and now to give us a better successor
#2 - Bo was never breaking through

Should have probably kept listening before I posted those what ifs…the hosts’ takeaways seem to be:

    1. Nebraska was successful as a program because they found inefficiencies and took advantage. In an age where in-game attendance was more important than tv revenue, they built a cathedral. They were the first to have a regimented S&C program. They got kids who dreamed about being Huskers to walk-on. And utilized partial/no -qualifiers better than anyone else did.

    2. Nebraska probably couldn’t have done anything differently to avoid the down period starting in the late 90s. Increasing importance of TV revenue with corresponding decrease in importance of game attendance, removal of prop 48 and more schollie options for high schoolers were all inevitable.

I don’t know how much I agree with these assessments, but the one thing that stands out to me is that through all of the last 25 years or so there’s still great enthusiasm for the program amongst its fans. Apathy kills programs, but you guys continue to pack the house, build up NIL and all the infrastructure around the program is still there. Makes me think it’s just a matter of getting the right people in place. Hopefully Rhule is that guy. Based on his history, I think he has a good chance to be.

Hosts made it sound like DTO knew what was coming and got out ahead of it. Specifically noted that he complained about the end of prop 48 after winning NC in 95 (?)

If that’s true, seems like he already understood he either needed to innovate or retire and he chose the latter.

In regards to #1, watch this 30 minute replay of the Fiesta Bowl against Florida. You will see a lot of tendencies that show Osborne was already trending towards a spread option and I’m 95% sure Urban Meyer has said a lot of his influence on offense was Osborne and you could see how it was evolving.

Frazier runs multiple times in an empty backfield with 4-5 guys spread out wide to create space. One play Frazier takes the ball to the right and most of the players go that way. Phillips (running back) sneaks out to the left and a few lineman come back around to lead block. It’s first touchdown play and just a genius play design. TO sucks ass as a congressman and influencer, but the dude was as good of an offensive mind as the college game has ever seen.

Originally he was about as much about the forward pass as any coach in the country in late 60’s/early 70’s but switched to the option and I formation because of what he thought would give Nebraska the best chance to be the most successful…and then called the plays like a mastermind and created new ones.

Also, if TO doesn’t retire Nebraska almost for sure has at least 2 more titles if he stays around even 5 years, 10 it’s probably 3.

1999 is almost a given and 2000 and 2001 are right there.

TO stays around and Nebraska absolutely has the talent to line up against Miami. Nebraska was a juggernaut recruiting towards the end of Osborne, with the Rivals era just becoming a thing Nebraska would have been top 5 every year in rankings.

Not even a question in my mind tbh.

like I said in my post, he had already innovated several times. Not one kid in America wasn’t going to think about going to Nebraska at that point.

Hell, on his way out the door he got the 2 best dual-threat qbs in the nation fighting at the same time (Crouch & Bobby N.) and had studs like Grant Wistrom and others on defense who would be 5 stars or high 4 stars.

While we would have had a few less guys from prop 48 the overall recruiting was going to be insane. It already was, and that recruiting (and Charlie McBride being a stud defensive coordinator) literally created the best team in 1999 that were a couple of dumb fumbles from winning the natty. Florida State is lucky as fuck they didn’t play that team.

But, you saw it erode the next 2 years because Solich didn’t have the mass coordination with recruiting that TO did. If he just TRIED it would have been top 10 classes and that led to his ultimate demise. Even more than his lack of ability to call good offensive plays that built on each other.

IIRC this was a big reason he was opposed to the Big 8 expanding into the Big 12. I know they wanted to end the prop 48 plus I think he was concerned with the Texas/power struggle aspect. Both of which were valid concerns.

Then there’s the classic story about the timing of his retirement announcement so he could all but name his successor.

He refused to change his defensive system and got decimated by read option, jet sweeps, and to a lesser extent crossing routes. His defensive system was elite vs traditional power I and spread passing teams, except when they featured read options.

Eventually, everyone started having “multiple” offensive systems and not having elite athletes made his system ineffective.

great defensive coordinator, well above average HC, subpar human being, incompetent program CEO
