experienced one of these on 9/11 when they scrambled jets at WPAFB. i lived about 5-10 miles away and shit in my house literally shook.
I had an F-15 pilot ask us if he could go supersonic to burn off some fuel so he could land; we initially said no cuz it was 6:30am and most of our FOB was asleep. He told us he was at 20k feet and it would sound like "thunder in the distance" so we said ok, went up on the roof and got real quiet so we could see if we could hear it. It was like a bomb went off everywhere all at the same time. We had SOF guys bailing out of their tents with plate carriers and underwear on. Our air support guy freaking vanished for 6 hours and left me to deal with the angry Army guys with undiagnosed PTSD coming in pissed off.
