Staying at the Motto in Chinatown. Don't spend a lot of time at the hotel so usually go on the cheaper side (using Hilton points) and this one is close to a Metro stop.
Near the Dabney: Supra = Georgian (the country) on 11th St in Mt. Vernon Sq / Logan Circle Tortino = Italian, right across the street from Supra on 11th El Sol = Mexican one block north from Supra I miss living in that neighborhood so much.
Walkable from Chinatown: Fine-ish dining Rasika (Indian - Always a go-to for us when people are visiting) Cranes (Japanese/Spanish fusion - Really enjoyed this place) Bar Spero (went last weekend and really enjoyed it) L'Ardente (haven't been but heard nothing but great things) Kinship or its sister uber-nice restaurant Metier More casual but still great places Daikaya (Ramen) Unconventional Diner Any of the Jose Andres places that are all within a block of each other Jaleo (Spanish) China Chilcano (Peruvian) Zaytinya (Mediterranean) Oyamel (Mexican) Usually don't recommend hotel bars but the bar at the Riggs is great. There's another bar in the basement called Silver Lyan that's in an old bank vault.
Next to Mescalero, Taq Habanero, Anafre, and the Red Derby. All quality establishments (and now we're up closer to where I live these days). Further north on 14th street is Atxondo, a Spanish place that I hope continues to make it (they were pretty empty the last 2 times I've been). Great place to sit outside and eat once the weather warms up.
if you’re into music, 9:30 Club is one of my favorite venues of all time. Blackcat is also cool but a bit smaller. DC9 is even smaller but awesome and lots local and up and coming artists roll through. Great roof too.
Friend just bought a townhouse in Silver Spring. He seems to like all the parks/area. He works from home a lot and only has to go into DC 2x a week so it's not too bad.
That burning rubber death smell all over the region today is apparently from a forest fire in NC those MAGA pricks are too lazy to put out.
Just got back joe- Some notes Zoo, free, have to reserve tickets, great exhibits Spy Museum, tickets cost money, reserve in advance, was really fun The Wharf, bartaco was great, kids also enjoyed Gordon Ramsey’s fish and chips Capitol tour, call your rep, if you’re from a red state their interns should have slots available because most of their constituents already stormed the Capitol DC Ghost Tour at Supreme Court was a good time Hop on/hop was an easy way to see memorials and monuments without so much walking Salt Line and Biergarten across from Nationals stadium was a great recommendation, lobster roll was amazing. not everyday you see a team give up three home runs in the ninth, but Nationals Park was a nice stadium. You have to go the Hayes Adams basement bar across from the White House to see the funny ass caricature coasters. Mine was of McConnell, caricature of Trump on the wall had three chins and was great Lunch outside at the Willard is great people watching Holocaust museum was really powerful to show the kids Air and Space Museum has a Star Wars X Wing from Rise of Skywalker Mt Vernon was really well done with the guides in the Mansion Didn’t get to make it to the Archives, Arlington National Cemetery , or do paddle boats in the tidal basin yellow line being out really limited our time and added to commute, but easy enough to get to Navy Yard and Metro Center, though we always seemed to just miss the blue line
Saw there was a shooting by the Friendship Archway in Chinatown. We're staying at the Motto. I'm from outside New Orleans, so I know shootings can happen anywhere but also know the importance of neighborhoods. Will we be ok to walk from Motto to Barmini on a Saturday night? Any areas to avoid before or after dark?
If you want to be extra careful, just walk south down 6th. The “bad” area is really just concentrated around 7th and H. That said, it’s not what I’d call a rough neighborhood. Just a decent amount of people “loitering”
Thanks for the recommendations. The Dabney was fantastic. Food/service/wine...everything exceeded expectations. Also did a drink flight at barmini. Pretty cool concept and executed very well.
Headed to DC in a few weeks, gents, and haven't been since I was a teenager. Related: What neighborhoods should I frequent if I want to bar hop and/or go to beer/dive bars? I'm staying a few blocks from the White House, right across the street from Franklin Park, but don't mind taking an Uber or whatever for the right place. Thanks in advance.
dive bars would be Petworth, Adams Morgan, U Street, etc… For the breweries, you should definitely head to Other Half in Ivy City. Also, google Metropolitan Beer Trail. It’s a former industrial area near the train tracks that has a strip of 3/4 breweries with bars in them all in walking distance of one another.
Another sewer explosion it sounds like seriously tho probably just fireworks. Dc residents always think a bomb has gone off as soon as they hear fireworks or a car back firing
Lived here for 6 years this summer. I’ve lived in some places with some pretty inept local government’s but DC’s is particularly terrible. Obviously some of that is due to the lack of statehood and/or home rule being relatively recent, but it’s so frustrating at times.
hello DC brothers, any must hits for annapolis? headed there tomorrow with the girlfriend and staying at the historic inns
Amigos, any good restaurant recs for good food and atmosphere for a bum in a hoodie and sweats in between roughly foggy bottom and Logan circle? Im famished.
I feel like I cannot express my distaste for Gambet DC enough. It is the embodiment of government corruption and inefficiency. It makes my blood boil every time I think about it.
they’re crooks that should be in prison. The monopoly that was created when they won their illegal no bid contract is quite literally criminal. Their odds are atrocious and their app makes my eyes bleed. Lake of fire for those fucking assholes
Have any of you tried Peter Chang’s? They’ve expanded rapidly through the DMV, mid Atlantic, and I fucking love them. Every location has been consistent and the food is great imo. Try the dry fried eggplant and/or mushrooms if you go.
I have yet to do Peter Chang, but there is a Mama Chang in Fairfax that is my favorite Asian food in the area. It can be a little spicy for my kids so usually have to be by myself but definitely great food
Conflicting reports about whether the Caps/Wiz moving to Alexandria is imminent but damn, if that happens it’s going to be catastrophic for an already ailing downtown.
