Ha, I was about to say non-Rolex but removed that part, I like the aesthetics of that watch but don’t love the brand for some reason
I like it more and more every time I see it, and I generally don’t like that bracelet. Just a beautiful watch.
Tons of great ideas here. I have a Seiko SPB143 and wear it every day. Absolutely love it. I also have a blue Tudor BB58, it’s also available in a more versatile black/gilt color way. The Omega SMP300 is probably where I’d steer you around that price range. As you get up into $5-10k, the options thin out quite a bit outside of Submariner, some Panerei, and possibly Glasutte Originale.
Or maybe a Fifty Fathoms? I don’t know their price point, think they are pretty large though. https://www.reddit.com/r/Watchexchange/s/yFsxcyHJRH
My love for GS is well documented, but I hate their divers & sports watches so much... just feel cheap in comparison to their contemporaries
Agreed. I wanted to find a “value” in GS when posting that list last night (like in the Hamilton Navy and Longines Hydroconquest, both wear nicely) but I couldn’t. I know the JLC Polaris is popular, but same thing… not my jam. Far from the strength in their lineup.
Omega SMP 300 Omega Seamaster 300 (my personal favorite on this list) Tudor Pelagos Tudor Black Bay Breitling Superocean - can't believe I typed this, but they are aesthetically great Glachütte Original SeaQ
I fucking the JLC Polaris... If I dropped to a 2-watch collection, a Reverso-Polaris combo is a very strong contender
Would add Breguet Marine 5817 and Cartier Calibre Diver for something different. had a Breguet Marine on a rubber strap for a while but traded it in against another watch. Regret it.
I love JLC & prefer to own something the masses don't... Master Control Calendar is also on the wish list.
I’m going to try on the ultra thin date again today and continue trying to convince myself it’s not perfect on the wrist.
It’s a good list. I actually didn’t like the vintage inspired Seamaster 300 on wrist, and was blown away by how nice the SMP300 wore in comparison. Relevant:
Two watches for the rest of my life is a tough one. One would have to be an AP RO white face. Not sure on the 2nd. Maybe the classic all yellow gold day-date. Or a patek 5712.
For sure a difficult decision. I don't think I'd actually land on 2 JLCs... would take a lot of thought to narrow it down. 1. Speedy 321 2. ???
two watch collection? - rolex 116710LN gmt master ii for everyday wear; i'm partial to the older model + black dial/bezel but basically any color combo or sports watch works (submariner, speedmaster, nautilus, etc) - patek phillipe 5227G calatrava for fancier occasions that can easily be dressed down
That GMT could be my only watch, if pressed to do so. But pair that with a Day Date and that’s my twosome.
I barely ever need a dress watch so I'd go like something stupid with a zenith 21 defy El primero blue dial and maybe white dial Tudor gmt. Travel watch would be the daily wear.
Explorer II (white dial) and a Zenith Original Chromomaster (tri color dial with the blue leather strap if I had to pick) and I’m good.
I think the nautilus style mostly looks awful for example. Dunno what it is about that shape and case finish but not for me.
Used to think the same but have seen quite a few in person over the years and they really grew on me. Plus having two Genta watches for the two would be cool. Might revise my answer to a royal oak jumbo and a 5711. The two originals.
And you have to have the nautilus on wrist. I loved the aquanaut until I tried them both on. Nautilus is the real deal, it’s perfect.
Seamaster is probably my favorite on this list as well. Speedy is one of my two collection watches so it would just be a matter of how duplicative that felt but I feel one day I'll pull the trigger I randomly really like the Black Ceramic Seamaster - just a totally different look. The Bay Black ceramic I didn't love for some reason when I tried it on
That’s actually the Seamaster I went with, for similar reason… completely different than everything else I own. 43.5mm wears much smaller with the rubber strap & titanium. Spoiler
I don’t have a lot of watches to compare but it Doesn’t have a date so takes about 3 seconds to set the time if it’s off.
Yeah, the waves are in reverse relief which gives it more of a matte look… where all other SMP300s are the opposite & have a glossy finish. It’s a cool little detail
