Man this one hurts a lot They earned that spot in that game and fought their asses off I know it’s cool on here to pretend not to care but I’m gutted for Diebler and his team
I didn’t think the Bonner shot could be topped for stupidity then Zed said hold my beer and decided he was an offensive tackle NIT it is, hopefully we retain most this team
I was rooting for y’all as Diebler seems wholesome and Underwood is not. But it’s a real pain in the ass being on that end of the refs disparity isn’t it? ;)
Yup...we did some dumb shit down the stretch. They got numerous huge offensive rebounds...Royal jacking up a 3...Zed screen....didn't get the calls either, but we did some dumb shit.
Well that sucked. Shannon got every call. Just bulldozed his way to the rim. So glad to never see Zed, Mahafey, or Bonner again.
Pretty shitty that Gene chose to let Holtmann tank this team and roster as long as he did. I wonder what could have been if the move would have been made sooner. Great job by Diebler salvaging the end of the season, it was fun watching basketball and caring again.
Perfect time to let go of Holtmann was after the UM loss. Instead we went another couple weeks, with the same results.
Revisionist history on when to fire a college basketball coach in-season is kind of weird. It doesn't even really happen. Was there a coach in a mediocre season that was fired before he was ?
Retaining Diebler would be the surest way of doing that. And the guy can recruit: https://247sports.com/Coach/jake-diebler-3930/AllTimeRecruits/
I think everyone likes Diebler a lot...but, the teams record was also like 2 games above .500 in his years as the top assistant. When you can afford to get a "top" guy... probably should do that over getting caught in the moment over a 6-2 record. Unfortunately, I don't think any of the other options are perfect fits...but, probably better than locking in the 6-2 guy. Program could probably use a refresher overall as well.
Definitely do what it takes to get May but still bummed out That lineup when we got up 10 was the beginning of the end, still could have gone our way but gave them life. We had them on the ropes and took out the 2 guys killing them. Said at the time, was a Holtmann move to buy time instead of going for the kill. Get rid of Zed and the whites, hopefully retain the core group, and get some more length across the board and another shooter(we are bringing in Mobley and Chatman could develop into 1 but more needed) Letting it out while still relatively sober I also really don’t understand how Gayle is such a terrible 3 point shooter with that beautiful stroke
If you're pinning the record on an assistant after what you've seen, then I don't know what to tell you. Maybe you have a higher opinion of Holtmann than the rest who now see just how much he dragged the program down. As noted before, the team under Holtmann was 143rd in adjusted defense for conference games. Under Diebler until this game, the team was 11th. When you watch actual in-game coaching decisions, you'll see that the difference is stark. And the decisions were solid. What type of guy are you thinking? Just in the last few days, more jobs have opened up and more will. TTUN and Louisville. One has had more recent success than OSU and the other is just outside the historical blue bloods. Louisville will pay up for a coach. It's not like we're the only major program needing a new coach. Right now, it's looking like May and Miller are the only other reasonable choices after Diebler. Fans note May's recent success, but he's hardly a certainty either. He runs a system of 4-out, 1-in with four guards under 6'4". Despite the performance in last year's tournament, that's hardly a guarantee that it will translate to big boy ball. Look at Porter Moser and Andy Enfield. Both were hot commodities at tiny programs that caught lightning in the bottle during the tournament. Heck, Moser got Loyola Chicago to a Final Four and a Sweet 16. Meanwhile, Oklahoma has been mediocre under him and it doesn't look like they're getting better. Enfield has been okay at USC, but... meh. Sean Miller has the better record at bigger programs, but maybe I'm not so keen on a guy who racked up 5 level 1 infractions. All I know is, if someone else is brought in, he better be a home run and he better perform at a high clip right away. Because when Diebler is made a head coach elsewhere, he'll be the comparison.
The point is...there is no home run and Diebler isn't one either. Diebler at some MAC or below school won't be a comparison either.
