There is a huge market for women's sports when adequate resources are dedicated to them. In this column
Gotta bump that up, needs to be north of $5mm. Men's coach got a raise to $4mm after this year so no way you can have the GOAT making less than him.
thats the ranking that shocked me but I’m happy with more fuel to the fire now that we have Sarah Strong on board
Strange how the bonuses don’t include making it to the Sweet Sixteen and Final Four. In theory she could make the same money doing less work by losing to a 16 seed in the first round rather than losing by 1 point in the championship game.
Does Dawn's assistants get paid pretty well? One of the them had a plain white t-shirt that said "Gucci I love you". Probably a pretty expensive t-shirt. It was also very ugly, but I'm a middle aged man that doesn't know fashion..
You’d think we’re getting these Gucci etc clothes free/at discount for promotional consideration but not sure
Honestly no clue what the women's (or men's) assistants make but anecdotally I'm told the women's program has "much more support staff." At a men's practice there are a few people running things; at one of Staley's practices there's extra people doing all kinds of things. (Told to me by a manager with the men's team.) When you win, people want to be involved.
Dawn Staley’s teammates at UVA were Heather and Heidi Burge, who were the influences behind one of the greatest kids sports movies of all time
I wonder if the Sunday afternoon time slot helped or hurt in the end. Definitely seems better than the 9:20 Monday time slot
I'm excited for Caitlyn Clark but this dude right here is prime example of why so many of us push back against the Caitlyn Clark phenomenon. So many of the people assuring us that she is the Michael Jordon of women's basketball haven't watched women's basketball prior to this year and have never watched the WNBA. They have no idea who Aja Wilson or Breanna Stewart are. They discount the immense accomplishments of all the players before Caitlyn Clark out of hand, with no actual knowledge of who those players are or what they did. Jason Sideikis referring to Dawn Staley as "Dawn Stanley" is another great example. Clark's arrival might be a trancendiary moment in WNBA history, time will tell, but all these folks are going to go right back to ignoring a sport that many of us love, if she ends up just being another Ionescu. Edit: not intended as a shot at Ionescu Edit 2: Also, there's a significant contingent of Clark fanboys who hate Brittany Griner and Dawn Staley and others for pretty obvious reasons...
I think the point is she is bringing up the level of entertainment like MJ. There was also a ton of NBA players that were extremely talented before MJ yet he still brought in the viewers and the talent. I interpret what they’re saying as they should leverage Clark and use her to showcase all the talent in the W. Maybe it’ll keep viewers around whether or not Clark is actually elite or not. Because that is not guaranteed, but if she is they’re all gonna benefit immensely. To your last point. Clark can’t really pick her fans. She may honestly have awful political opinions, but she doesn’t broadcast it so no one really knows. Not like MJ was a saint. One of his famous quotes was that republicans also bought his shoes. She keeps her head down mostly and tries staying out of all the off the court controversy. It’s pretty impressive honestly.
When he sad the MJ of women's basketball, he's referring to the best on court player ever. He mentioned Magic and Larry started it, the Finals were on tape delay before them, and then MJ took it to the next level in popularity. She's going to be the most well known WNBA player the minute she's drafted. She's going to be the MJ of the WNBA from a notoriety standpoint. He's right, the others hating on her instead of gassing her is dumb. The bigger she is the between for the WNBA.
like every sport. We lost 20+ in football, 9 from men’s basketball and currently at 6 from an Elite 8 basketball team that was only going to lose 1 player if everyone came back. Realignment has completely killed every team at the school. I’m scared for the losses after baseball season.
3rd team all American Reagan Beers is now gone. 4 starters that would have returned from an Elite 8 team.
for the hype? she needs to be in five years where A'ja is right now, which is the second best player in the league behind Stewie because in about five years Stewie will slow down and/or hang it up and A'ja will be taking over.
I might've misread it too. She definitely has her negatives, but I and other Iowa fans obviously gloss over many of them. It is an extremely rare opportunity for us to see a generational type player come from Iowa, so most Iowa fans obviously have an extreme bias towards her. Only part I really took exception to is the fanbase correlation. While somewhat true, I don't think those types of fans are really going to follow her into the WNBA bc they are most likely misogynist also.
