If 'images' include art for this paper theres an interesting series by documentary filmmaker Erroll Morris that ran in the NYT about fine art forgeries by Van Meergeren during WWII. Innumerable literal and figurative falsities. http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/05/27/bamboozling-ourselves-part-1/
For all the frozen soldier fans, German soldiers frozen at Stalingrad 1943. Seems like their bodies are on a pile of wood ready to be burnt.
Since you can bet your sweet dupa I'm proud to be Polish. I give you: Wojtek the soldier bear with a Polish soldier 1942.
Body of a French boy blown into a tree from German shellfire at the Battle of Verdun, 1916 Not sure about the validity of this one
Might as well throw this one in as well if we're going to keep on going with the Northern White Male rage Supposedly it's Chief Big Foot dead at the Battle of Wounded Knee 1890
This is a bomb falling within a couple other bombs that have already landed. Tripoli Libya, March 2011.
Mellon Ice Arena half torn down in Pittsburgh, PA. Only posted because I've had a blast seeing Pearl Jam there. Sad to see it go.
I realize this isn't a picture, but it's a pretty interesting video of the tornado that touched down outside of Ann Arbor last week. It's captured by some disc golfers, so you know they're not high. Yes, some of these people are my friends.
Pretty sure this picture was staged, with the cameraman dragging the dead body quite a ways to set up this shot.
If there wasn't a surprised fella in a monocle and handlebar mustache taking a bath on the second floor of the apartment on the right, scrubbing his back in a claw-foot tub, I will be very disappointed in American history.
Thanks for the help guys. I couldn't use Iwa Jima because it was an example used in class. I ended up going with the picture of the South Vietnam General executing the vietcong officer in the street.
how is that a falsehood? the dude shot and killed a vietnamese guy the guy executing was related to i believe. yea it was used against the war as some sort of "bad" image but shit the dude deserved to get a bullet in the skull
Alexander Gardner was a Scottish-born photographer who early in the war was commissioned by the Union army to take photos. He took the famed "Home of a Rebel sharpshooter" Gettysburg photo of a Confederate soldier at Devil's Den. Many say he staged the photo for dramatic effect in dragging a body 40 yards and repositioning it with the help of his assistant Timothy H. O'Sullivan. In a 1961 study of more Gardner photos, two photos showed the appearance of the same dead Confederate sniper, and this suggested they were also staged. Although there is evidence to suggest that some of the photos of Civil War were staged, we should understand that this was not necessarily frowned upon in the early years of photography in the 19th century. http://www.totalgettysburg.com/civil-war-photos.html
Two reasons. 1) The photographer was quoted expressing extreme regret for taking the photo because of how bad the general was criminalized after the photo was taken. He claims to have falsely depicted the man as an evil person, when in reality he was doing what was right for his army and his country. So the picture is false in the sense that he is depicted as a much worse person than he actually was. He even expressed regret to the general's family when he passed away not too long ago. (This isn't my personal opinion. Anyone who kills anyone without given them the due process of law is a bad person. But it is what the photographer said so I went with it) 2) It is believed by many and alleged by a few people there that the general shot the guy out in the open like that because the cameras were there. It most likely would have been inside, but the general wanted to send a message so he staged an execution. THe man was still murdered so it had many truths, but was false in the sense that it was not a candid photograph.
i mean yea those are good points, would just be a fuck ton easier to actually find a straight up doctored photo, but i dont get paid to elevate other people's english papers
well if its ABSTRACT you can just talk about anything and everything. i do not miss fucking english writing classes
