Thanks for the info. I'm saving some money now, been wanting a dog for years, but until next fall I've been moving every few months to work so it couldn't work. I'm pretty excited, even though it won't happen until september
Do they cover shots? We still have one round of shots and at $100 a pop it might be worth it to get the insurance.
No it doesnt cover anything routine. Shots, heartworm ect. But for emergency trips to the vet, disease and other stuff its great. Luckily, Ive only had to take Truman to the vet once for something non scheduled. Just a $20 copay, as opposed to a $100 visit. I im not jinxing it, but I feel Ive been pretty lucky with him. I feel like most people have had to take thier pups to the vet for some random thing (random illness, something they ate and obstucted a bowel ect..) at least twice in thier first year. Puppies get into so much shit, you never know what is going to hurt them. Also, depending on what you get - it covers other stuff you would never think about: Reward if they go missing, covers damage if the escape and tear up your neighbors lawn or something. If you get sick and for some reason cant take care of your dog, they'll cover boarding costs for up to two weeks I think.
Interesting. I'll look into it. Have you boarded Truman at all yet? I hopefully won't have to board Cooper for a while but I'd like to know of a good place just in case.
I've actually became pretty good friends with a few of the other dog owners from the park. There is a group of 4 or 5 of us that watch each others dogs for a weekend or whatever if one of us needs it. Its been pretty nice because I know they are all good to thier dogs and Truman gets to play with this buddies. So Ive only had to board him a couple of times. I take him to Chasing Tails. The woman came highly recommended and Truman has come home exhausted. She runs a day care for dogs, and the ones she boards, she brings home with her. She has a big yard and her family and some staff stay there too, so they are always around. I think she sets a limit and only boards 7 or 8 dogs at a time, and they all sleep with her. Its nice, I know she doesnt just stick him in a kennel at night. Her website sucks, but she will friend you on FB and post videos of your dog when she has him. Also - she doesnt separate her business page, from her personal page, so you see a bunch of random stuff. She obviously is a bartender at Citizen, so get some semi slutty pics of random chicks on her FB as well. http://chasingtails4u.com/chasingtails4u/Home.html https://www.facebook.com/CHASINGTAILS4UPF
JollyRoger any idea on what breeds copper has in him? Looks a lot like some of the pups I'm looking at tmrw and they are all labeled as simply "hound"
I forgot to mention that its $45 bucks a night, which is definitely on the low end here, and she will come pick him up and drop him off which is nice too. She'll also do a temperament test, where she will take him for half a day to see how he does with other dogs. Basically a free half day of dog sitting.
He is mostly beagle (which is a hound dog) he is mixed with something else but we have no idea what with. A lot of people have said he looks a little like a rottweiler, but I think maybe doberman.
A few friends stopped to see Pretzel. She was a timid dog but she is already to the point where she recognizes that I'm her guardian and absolutely already loves me. She is a great dog with a good personality. Pretty damn happy I adopted because I know she is in a much better place, but at the same time she has already added so much for me. I've always had dogs but this is the first one that is "mine" (parents since I was a kid, living with friends at their house, etc.) and such a great decision. Going to be a bit of work because she isn't completely house trained, but damn if I don't love her already.
I forgot who the poster was that adopted two puppies (siblings). I want to say they were Beagle pups, but I could be wrong. How are they doing?
Barbet. It's similar to a Portuegese Water Dog, but more hunting instinct. Big breed in Holland and Canada but rare in the states.
Holy crap you weren't kidding Status in the United States Barbet Puppy There are very few Barbet in the United States. Estimated Barbet living in America as of 2012 are somewhere between 100-110.
I wish I could put anything in my dogs crates. But they destroy blankets, beds, anything. Spoiler: Destroyed bed Here was a magazine that was left in reach. Spoiler
Really awesome dogs, this is my second one. doesn't shed, calm with high prey drive. She'll hunt with me or she'll lay down as we eat downtown.
So true. Check to see if any vets near you have a puppy plan. Basically you pay up front for all the shots and regular checkups, but it saves you in the long run. Only issue, make sure they are a good vet cause you are locked in.
Friend of mine is looking to get a dog soon and I wanted to share where he's getting his from....because this is fucking awesome: http://www.jaildogs.org/
having Rory pretty much grow up under my watch has reinforced my desire to stay child-free. I worry about him so much that I can't imagine how I would function knowing I would be responsible for something like a child
Lilly finally laid down almost the entire car ride from Macon to Atlanta today. She did great riding as a puppy to and from Savannah then one day it clicked that she didn't like it and was always anxious. She's happy if she can ride in my lap while I drive...she's 60 pounds, so that's easier said than done. Usually does better when my wife rides in the back with her, but still doesn't always lay. Today she laid down and slept.
pretty successful day 1. of course she has shat and pissed everywhere but that is to be expected, but it could have been a lot worse, :knocksonwood:. she's still pretty skiddish so its going a delicate balance early on with scolding her. still thinking of a name. top 3 names right now are wrigley, dixie, and payton.
Awesome dog. How old? Im not sure where you go to school, but if you plan to come back to Chicago, dont name it Wrigley. Every other dog here is named that or Addison.
i go to school in virginia. i knew a ton of wrigleys when i was growing up near chicago. shes 10 weeks. spca thinks she's a lab/beagle mix.
Been a long time since I had a dog but bought two German Shepards this past weekend. We get them in 2 weeks. Still thinking about names (Both boys). Early leader for one of them is Panzer and wife likes Sarge for the other but still undecided.
She's adorbs Mr. Bean. If she's pissing/shitting all over the place take her out every hour on the hour. It's a lot, but it's working with Cooper.
There is a bar that is having a "puppy love" night on Valentines day. Basically its a bring your dog to the bar night. First time ive been single in about 4 or 5 valentines days, so I think I may go with another buddy and go fishing. See what Truman can reel in for me. Wish he was still a younger pup. Would be like shooting fish in a barrel.
Can't stress enough how great a puppy is for meeting chicks. I've only had him a month and have had 7-8 good looking girls approach me so they can pet him. And that's just from taking him outside in our little yard. (it's been too cold for him to go on walks.)
Our apartment is pretty big so we play a lot of fetch/wrestle etc. Also he's not supposed to go on walks yet since he's not fully vaccinated but we've broke that rule a couple of times. I really notice a huge difference in his behavior when he gets to go on walks, I really wish the weather wouldn't be so awful because I feel bad keeping him inside all the time.
I can't wait for summertime. He will be pretty much full grown and we can go to the park and play fetch outside and walk around on the beach and go do fun stuff.
