Supergroup alert: Tool, Mastodon members are The Legend of the Seagullmen
Posted by Bram Teitelman on February 9, 2015

It feels like about 10,000 days since we’ve heard any new music from Tool (puns!), but today yet another surprise supergroup popped up featuring not only Tool’s Danny Carey, but Brent Hinds from Mastodon as well. Called Legend of The Seagullmen, Dimitri Coats of OFF! is rumored to be involved as well. Jimmy Hayward, who directed Jonah Hex, which Mastodon did the soundtrack for, serves as the project’s producer. The band arrives fully formed, too, with two songs already available for download. It seems to be a nautical-themed band, with the two songs available called “The Deep Sea Diver” and “Ships Wreck.”

At this point, it’s hard to tell whether this is a full-on project, or just a one-off. Going back well over three years, there appears to have been a short film made for the band, and while Hinds was involved in it, there was no talk of him or Carey being in the band, and the film was only in the planning stages back then. Will there be more music? Will they tour with Giraffe Tongue Orchestra? Neither Tool or Mastodon’s website says anything about the project, so at this point in time, it seems to be a wait and see thing. The two songs, which are great, by the way, are available for free download at the band’s site.

They're playing a one off show on Halloween night so chances are they'll play something new. Or at least that's what they've done prior to recording/releasing everything since Ænima.

Also fuck you Fidelio for bumping this and getting my hopes for news up.

Seen em twice - once at Bonnaroo and once in Greenville, SC. Bonnaroo show was insane, Tom Morello came out and played a solo during lateralus. Pretty sure they played the entire show without taking their set break. Ended with AEnima too, which was pretty fucking cool.

Only once for me so far. Saw them at Liberty State Park. When they came on a giant full moon was coming up over the statue of liberty. Really cool looking. Then they came on and nailed it. Far and away the best show for me.

There are maybe 5 bands/acts for me that I really want to see live and haven't yet. Tool is one of them. So are the Stones. Crossing off Carlos Santana at Lock'n Festival this year. Saw

A Perfect Circle as one of my first concerts, Maynard stood behind a backlit screen the entire time so all you saw as his silhouette.

A guy who did some artwork for Undertow sued over image rights. The band had purchased an insurance policy that was supposed to protect them in the case of such an event but coverage was denied. They filed suit and the insurance company countersued so the band was involved in a shitty legal three way for several years.

They settled sometime ago with the artist and this past spring a judge ruled in their favor putting an end to the buttfuckery with the insurance company.

Now with that shit out of the way it's time to, oh I don't know, record some new fucking music for the first time in a decade.

Don't miss it if there is another chance, fantastic live. Last show I saw in a small arena, opened with Jambi. Probably the most memorable live song in my life, from a live perspective at least. So loud, that bass and those drums. :rockin:

Can we have a side conversation about Primus, since they're relevant to the current tour.

I've been all over the place on them since I was a teenager. Teenage me dug how strange they were vocally, with little appreciation for how good the music, other than it was good to slam into other teenagers to.
The older I get, the more I appreciate the overall music talents, but the more the vocals grate on me.

Do I share this likeness with anyone?

On Halloween they played No Quarter, Opiate & The Grudge for the first time in like a decade, and in his own cryptic faggot way Blair alluded to hearing them rehearse shit from Undertow so I get a sense that there's going to be a little more variety. Plus, they played something new at the Monster Bash so I'd expect at least that 1 to be teased.

It's always been about the music for me. Les Claypool is obviously known as a GOAT on bass guitar and the drummer and guitarist are super skilled up as well. The sound of the vocals ain't much haha but I did find their lyrics amusing

I mean, you really just have to take them for what they are: a weird, evil carnival of whacky fictional characters and crazy stories

Sometimes the lyrics are a representation of something more..."too many puppies" is about war, many of the songs on their newest album are knocks against mtv and pop culture... but I've learned to not look too deeply into the lyrics and enjoy the ride.

In fact, I think I'm the opposite...the older I get the less I care about lyrics. There is nothing worse than a band trying too hard to say something profound and ending up with something cliche or too direct. I like some vagueness in my lyrics

I'm talking less about lyrics, truthfully...and more about his voice. I suppose I want to at least be able to understand the vague lyrics, and that's tough in a lot of songs.

15-year-old me wants to kick me in the nuts right now.

Wasn't there, just spoke to some who where/read the reviews. Thought the reworking of Opiate & Schism were interesting as well as leaving out Lateralus.
How'd the new song sound? Guy who was there said you could tell it had progressed a lot from the clips on YouTube but he couldn't tell if there were any vocals with yet

Was tough to tell about the costumes since we were a little ways back and they keep the stage pretty dark. The new song was an instrumental as far as I could tell.
