I've had a good time (never had a bad experience at least) whenever I've headed downtown for a show or event, but have little desire to go to the cluster fucks like ACL or SXSW. If I lived down near where Lau is I'd prob have a different attitude but since I moved here 3 years ago it's been Rundberg or further north. Even north Austin / Cedar Park / Round Rock area is becoming more accommodating but I get the itch to head downtown once in a while.
Have been out there twice and had a good time both times. Lot of people but the lines haven't been too long at all which is nice. I expect it will be worse though with the weather cooling off.
Lived in Hyde Park from 2006-2008 in grad school. Loved it. Could never afford it now. Next favorite places were (as mentioned above) 2222 near County Line and also down toward Dripping Springs. Would often take 281 to San Antonio instead of 35 just to see the scenery. I miss it a lot down there.
lower burnett is basically a 'district' now. Didn't really have much (that I recall) when I graduated in '11.
Yeah older houses that are by no means cheap, but still "affordable" compared to the rest of central Austin. My friends mom bought their nice 3 bed 3 bath on the west side of mopac and 2222 for 400k in 2008. Wish you could still find that.
Im paying more than I would like to for this rental. Sometimes I wonder why I ponied up like I did. I guess it was going to be hard to downgrade from our afton oaks house in Houston so I was willing to pay a little more to get something equivalent.
Yay. Looks like it's gonna rain weekend two again. Thousands more dollars wasted again! Sucks because I can't ever go weekend one because of end of month and Q3 close. If it looks like it's gonna be bad next week I may dump my tickets on Craigslist so I can at least cancel and save on the hotel.
would be a pretty absurd coincidence if ACL weekend 2 got a day rained out / closed for the third year in a row. Don't think weekend 2 has had a sunday happen yet 0/2 since I've been here. in a city that gets 30 minutes of rain every month this time of year...
Did they last year? We didn't go last year. Sucks cause this is the only vacation we take, but I'm not going and eating 3k just on the hotel alone if it's gonna be shitty. It looks like it's gonna be bad Friday so I wonder if they'll just cancel the whole weekend so the park doesn't get fucked up?
nah they'll ride or die until it's a goddamn lake. They cancelled Sunday last year after it monsooned and turned Zilker into a pond on Saturday night. Remember going to bed early and waking up to a storm. Out to go to work the next morning and the hallways of my apartment building has crusty ass shoes outside every other door

Last year, second weekend was a little wet, but generally OK. Sunday was beautiful. Two years ago, Noah played the Bud Lite stage.

Yeah. That was the year they cancelled the Sunday when we went. That's why I'm apprehensive about it possibly storming on Friday.
I know it was the year Atoms for Peace were headlining Sunday night. I remember the last year they had just the single weekend it poured during Big Gigantic too.

Oh god. I tried to post an update from the festival but I couldn't get signal. Camping guy finally abandoned his gear (literally threw it away instead of finding a place for it for the weekend) and made it inside the festival. He found the molly he had so desperately wanted to try and rolled face. About halfway through bassnectar on Saturday night, he left the festival with some new "friends" he met. They realized around 5 AM that he had no where to go and kicked him out. He called a mutual acquaintance of ours 20+ times until the guy picked up and after listening to camping guy's sad story, allowed him to crash on his couch. The whole ordeal (plus the comedown from the Molly) really took it out of camping guy and he skipped the festival sunday and then went home. So, as a recap, this guy spent 2 grand on camping equipment (thrown away) $300 on a ticket (went to 50% of 2 of the days) and several hundred for plane tickets to participate in the whole extravaganza. I do not know if he will be back next year.
In other news - Don't feel like going to Emo's for Sylvan Esso tomorrow night. Sold out. Put up a CL ad but if I don't sell it / get a chance to meet buyers tomorrow - does anyone want the ticket for free? We rented a house not too far from Rainey street - any recommendations for a good place to watch college football Saturday night (UF LSU game)? Scholz Beer Garten (sp?) downtown should be great since UT isn't playing this weekend. Great beer selection and good german themed but full normal bar and grill type food. smoked wings are 100. and IIRC it's the oldest operating business in the city and maybe even the world. Lots of TVs and hot waitresses too If you're staying on Rainey definitely go with Wu's Bar 96. You'll already be on rainey for after the game - Clive, Craft Pride (via 313 pizza is best pizza in town on their back patio). Container bar for sluts... it's made of a lot of shipping containers. And also the bachelorette party center of the city
