Mothafuckas done hijacked my show thread. >:-/ I've probably watched every episode 10+ times at this point and still notice things. As a huge book fag of Doyle's, it's hard not to be awed at the care and detail placed into every episode in terms of references; some are so subtle it's borderline genius. From character names to puns and twists on the established mythology. At the same time, I can watch it with people who've never picked up a book and they still become totally engrossed by it. Moffat and Gatiss deserve a knighthood for this. /fanboy
Well, just to use "A Study in Pink" Spoiler -The name itself is a reference to the first story, A Study in Scarlet - Watson is injured fighting in Afghanistan (Anglo-Afghan War in the stories, War on Terror in Sherlock). - In A Study in Scarlet, Watson says he was shot in the shoulder, but in The Sign of Four (the second novel) he said it was his leg. Gatiss/Moffat reference this by having Watson with a psychosomatic limp and the actual injury to the shoulder. - The pills were an integral part of the first novel, with a very similar method of use. - When Watson and Sherlock first go to 221B, Mrs. Hudson says "Mrs. Turner next door has got married ones." Mrs. Turner was the original name of their landlady in The Sign of Four. - The killer is a cab driver in both, with the addresses the same for the murder that brings Sherlock into the case. - Sherlock uses Watson's phone to deduce the facts of his sibling's life. In The Sign of Four it was a pocket watch, with most of the same correct conclusions. - They give readers a huge red herring with Mycroft's introduction, because he fits the mold of what Moriarty is supposed to be much more than the actual Moriarty. - The significance of "Rache" and "Rachel" is reversed from the original story to the the show. - Sherlock says he needs the nicotine patches because "it's a three patch problem." This is a similar wordplay to when he uses his "seven percent solution" of cocaine in The Sign of Four. -The passenger in the cab they think may have been the murderer is an American. The real killer in the story was an American. - When the cab begins to get away, Watson says he got the cab number, and Holmes says "good for you" before using his mind map of the roads. In The Hound of the Baskervilles, Watson laments not getting the cab number in a similar chase while Holmes casually mentions that he noticed it. - The killer has an aneurysm that speeds up his clock for action. In the story it's a heart aneurysm, while it's in the brain in the show. - The Science of Deduction becomes a website, whereas it was a newspaper article in the story that first led Watson to find out Holmes was a detective. - The episode ends with the two going to have dinner, in the same way the story ended with the two going to have dinner. Those are just a few I could think of off the top of my head.
The BBC and PBS Masterpiece just announced premiere dates for the UK and the U.S. debuts of the eagerly awaited Victorian special edition of the acclaimed detective drama. And for the first time ever, those dates are on the same day! The Sherlock special will air Friday, Jan. 1. It’s been a very long wait for more Sherlock. The international sensation starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman had its third season debut in January 2014. PBS’ agreement requires that the show first airs on the BBC, and UK networks tend to announce premiere dates much closer to when the show will actually air compared to U.S. networks (which often announce premiere dates many months in advance as part of a marketing campaign). Sherlockalso used to have wide gaps between its UK and U.S. air dates, but fan lobbying and widespread online piracy have considerably shrunk that window in recent years. In addition to the Victorian episode, a special one-off episode set during Victorian times, producers are also working on a fourth season of the regular, modern-day Sherlock. Filming for season 4 was originally expected to commence this year, but is now expected to begin in early 2016.
http://mashable.com/2015/10/26/sherlock-movie-theaters/?utm_cid=mash-com-Tw-main-link#YxZaD4zZmSq1 You'll be able to see the episode is a theater, if you are so inclined
If season 4 filming begins in early 2016, that probably means late 2016 at the earliest for new episodes... :-/ Oh well, special should tide me over until then.
Yes. It's going to have a very limited release to go along with being shown on the tube; believe there's only one theater in my area with a showing of it.
I hated it. Least favorite one they did. Im not a fan of dream sequences as a plot device. IMDB says the next episode isn't planned until 2017
I skipped the PBS showing of it and went to see it in the movie theater on the 2nd night of the cinema showings and I loved it...place was sold out and my theater all went home happy
BBCA is the only place I have ever seen Sherlock, but since everyone seems to not have liked it, I dont even care.
It already aired on PBS. Im sure they'll reair it at some point, but they show re-runs few and far between. Torrance is your best bet
I hate the implication that M is in fact dead. I knew he probably was the whole time, but I really was hoping to be wrong. The one shred of hope I am holding onto is the way that Sherlock just went on and on mocking Watson over his twins theory. It would be awesome if it winds up being a twin angle that allows M to still be alive.
Watched the bride last night. 2nd half of the episode was disappointing. And the first half set up for a payoff that never happened. Why did mycroft have redbeard and other shit in his notebook? He knows sherlocks pressure points to keep him in line?
Honestly a good question that I can't definitively answer. I think it was, but it could have been Frankland.
obviously watched S2E2 and 3 tonight with the wife on a rewatch for me, but spotted this as john is headed back to barts
The IOU graffiti on the wall to the right. It shows up several times in the episode, including on the wall behind Sherlock and Watson after they escape from the police.
Regarding the special, are we to believe that the next iteration of the show may be the old-time version of the duo and that the insinuation is that the newer version is the fake? Regardless, probably the weakest and least enjoyable episode of the series run.
