I've always wondered, what is the general consensus

it's better to own Michigan and win a high amount of games vs ranked teams but repeatedly stub your toe vs overmatched opponents (ala Urban)

or it's better to beat all the teams you are supposed to but struggle with highly ranked teams, many of which you are a dog against (ala Day)

would have loved to seen Urban vs a high functioning Michigan. his 7-0 vs them is great, but he did have the benefit of facing some supremely incompetent Michigan teams, particularly 2012-2015

Loses games you should win sucks.
Losing to Michigan is 100x worse.

I'd much rather beat them every year and our one loss be against an underdog.

Yes, Michigan has been better than under Urban's years.

    true

when I say inferior, I mean the vastly undertalented teams like 2013 Sparty, 2014 VT, 2015 Sparty, 2017 Iowa, 2018 Purdue

to be fair, he had this trend at UF as well. he would lose games to an Ole Miss, South Carolina, some bad Auburn teams. but he always had them ready to go vs the Bama's, LSU's, and all their rivals (UGa, Tenn, and FSU)

The quality of the conference is not comparable in the two eras.

From 2021-2023, Michigan finished ranked 3, 3, and 1 nationally. They were a top 10 team in every weekly poll from 10/3/21 - Texas loss in 2024.

They were 6, 3, and 1 when playing us.

From 2012-2018, they finished 24, NR, NR, 12, 10, NR, 14. They were unranked when playing OSU in 2013, 2014, and 2017. They only time they were top 10 was 2016 and 2018.

Penn State was not ranked in any weekly poll from 2012 until they upset 1 OSU in 2016. They were highly ranked in both 2017-18 when playing us, but those also are two of the most miraculous comeback wins by OSU in the last 25 years.

They have been ranked every time Day has played them except 2020 and he’s 5-0.

All that matters is that he ate the W, but he had a couple stinkers against bad UM teams too. In 2013 they were a 2pt conversion away from beating us after we gave up a zillion points to fucking Devin Gardner. In 2017 they had the ball with a chance to take the lead with 2 minutes left and John O'Korn was their QB. Again...whatever because we won, but it's not like every time we played them we annihilated them when they were shitty either.

The 21 and 22 games will never count for me, nor do I think they are any reflection on Day. I really only see the 23 loss as a true Michigan loss, and its one that I can accept as they were the eventual national champions and a really good team.

The Michigan teams that we played against with Meyer were generally bad, even when their ranking was higher. I just don't think you can look at any of those Michigan teams and think they would compare to the last couple years.

To answer the question, I would rather be losing to top 5 teams more consistently than I would losing to barely bowl eligible teams. Losing high quality games sucks, but at least you know your team was in it, playing the game. Those Iowa and Purdue losses were just killers and completely killed those seasons.

Urban Meyer was losing his fastball when he stepped down and it would have caught him.

His 2018 recruiting class was good on paper, but terrible on talent evaluation. 2019 was having issues before he stepped down.

Then there were some embarrassing losses:

    -shut out 31-0 Clemson 2016
-blown out 31-16 at home against Oklahoma 2017
    -blown out 55-24 Iowa 2017
    -blown out 49-20 Purdue 2018

Near misses like Penn State 2017 and 2018, or Maryland failing to convert a two point in 2018 in a 52-51 win.

Good morning and good luck to you this week sir. Didn’t realize you were a Tigers fan (or haven’t noticed you much in the MLB thread at least), but makes sense upon seeing the other teams in your fan of section.

Anyway, it should be a fun series, not excited about having to face Hinch and Skubal. And this has been such an odd and unexpected year with the injuries and really poor start (and being 10 games out in June)—by far the craziest of this run—that this postseason feels like gravy/playing with house money at this point.

So maybe feeling ok with however this week goes. Or maybe just glad to be finally feeling a little better after a 2-3 day hangover ;) Regardless, will be cheering for y’all and AJ if y’all advance. And if you or MG2 know anyone coming to town for the series and need some recs from a local (and not Google reviews or yelp), then please let me know fam

very reminiscent to his end in Gainesville

he tends to see the tide turning and bolts. as good as 2008-09 was, 2010 was a disaster. his recruiting classes were again, great on paper, but they were a dysfunctional mess. plus he saw Jimbo turning the tide in Tallahassee. he had the "health" thing in 2009, came back for 2010, and then abruptly resigned

I've always felt he was extremely calculated in the jobs he took, if they were set up to win now, and as soon as things got a little iffy, he bolted

great coach, obviously, but he also brought on the end at each stop through his own decision making and the way he ran everything

was updating my OSU workbook, hence the stat drop earlier and then the questions posed

here's a another comparison. Tressel top left box, Urban top right, Day bottom left, and the entire 2001-2024 period in bottom right with a variety of cross section looks

I have always marveled at the consistency of OSU coach after coach after coach

Meyer’s defenses were largely a disaster except for Chris Ash as DC in 2014-2015 and Fickell as co-DC with Schiano in 2016.

We were giving up 49-50 points to teams like Indiana (12), Iowa (17), Purdue (18), and Maryland (18).

Days defenses were a disaster in 2020-2021 as well, but we’re in a pretty good spot 2023-2024 there.

The amount of fuckery in Day’s losses is what jumps out to me immediately.

He owns the UM record but their scandal still has to be acknowledged

Throw in the overturned fumble “not a catch” vs Clemson and targeting no call on Marv vs UGA and that’s half his losses

He has had the second strangest career arc so far for the OL on this team. (Hinzmen being the most strange).

Luke came in and got buzz throughout last year that he might find a role as a true freshman, even getting snaps as the big FB on some short yardage plays. Now, he isn't even sniffing the field unless its in mop up duty.

Credit to Siereveld for making a huge leap, just strange we haven't seen anything from Montgomery.

Sparty doesn't belong here with those other bum teams. They won the Big 10 both of these seasons and were good to very good each year. They weren't even that less talented then us in 2013. We had the better offense but their defense was miles better then ours and one of the best in the country. 2015 I'm not revisiting.

Sparty recruits at sub 35% blue chip, they were significantly less talent despite the miracles Dantonio worked

2010-13 they signed 87 guys, only 15 were blue chips. OSU in that period signed 93 guys with 60 being blue chips

2012-15 Sparty signed 82 guys, 17 were blue chips. OSU in that period signed 100 guys with 67 being blue chips

In 2004, my oldest daughter was 1 1/2 and I did not watch the OSU-Iowa game live because we took her to a farm/pumpkin patch.

We ate out for dinner after the Halloween/Fall day trip, and my wife noticed that Iowa beat Ohio State 33-7.

I had taped the game on VHS.

Later that night, my wife got mad at me and stormed off to bed because she fell asleep during a movie we were watching and I changed the tape to the Iowa loss.

She didn’t understand that knowing it happened wasn’t enough. I had to know how and why.
