Not really a hot take, but at some point the staff is going to have to make a decision. You’re either going to spend money at DE, or you’re going to have to stop passing on kids who you might not view as “must gets”. For some reason they’ve spent the last 3-4 classes living somewhere in between and end up missing out on both.
Birms “update” a few minutes ago was shockingly negative, and that’s saying something as he is generally one to stand up for Ohio States approach. As Birm put it, it basically boils down to Ohio State being completely unprepared and not having the money or a complete misunderstanding the rules. Either of those is shocking since Bjork seemed to be heavily involved in the development of the new College Sports Commission. At the very least it seems we are pretty well set at all positions (even OT) other than DE, so hopefully they figure it out before December.
I was at that northwestern game, it was painful (and my dad is from Reynoldsburg, I never knew that about the QB).
Yawn Wake me up when we don’t sign a really good recruiting class, retain every key player, and add quality in the portal
It’s not a big deal, until it is, lol. I’m not a fan of bidding wars, unless a generational talent. It’s too soon to see the effects, so my opinion may change in a few years if our DE depth becomes a hindrance.
I don’t think OSU is hurting for money so the only real option here is that they either don’t understand the rules or they are right and a bunch of other schools are banking on the court not upholding what the house passed. I’d rather they just say fuck it and play dumb later on.
I see zero difference of what’s happening this cycle to the previous 4. Meadows is just the first we potentially lose to Michigan. Not like Michigan is spending crazy but showed last cycle they will pony up for premium positions.
I don’t know that it’s an actual money issue, more so in that they didn’t allocate the NIL Collective style money in the same way because it’s supposed to be outlawed. Best guess is the OSU compliance/legal teams not willing to do anything outside of the new rules and forcing these decisions.
I don’t disagree but I think the belief (maybe it’s more hope) was that the new legislation was going to even the playing field and provide rules for everyone to follow. Very clear now that few schools are actually following them.
I don’t disagree, but at some point Ohio State is going to have to pony up for premium positions as well. DE really seems to be the trouble point right now. I see a lot of people saying that Ohio State’s model is to pay to keep its own players while completely ignoring that JTT, Sawyer, Jackson, and Hicks were all top 100 recruits with Curry just outside of the top 100. It’s not a problem right now, but I could see it becoming one down the road if they don’t adjust (which I have faith they will). I don’t think Birm made that post today on accident.
The best part of how absurdly stupid 2011 was, we scored the go ahead TD against Purdue with less than a minute left, then missed the extra point to send it to overtime.
I would wait to see how aggressive the CSC becomes when enforcing the new NIL reviews after 7/1. The whole point in creating the CSC is to allow legitimate advertising use of NIL and prohibit big money boosters from buying recruits. We are going to see the usual coaching change flips in November/December, but we also are going to see players back on the market when their NIL deal is not approved.
My dog Damari “Cockeye’d Nasty Nate aka CHOPPA The Hole Clogga” Simeon looks fucking NICE !! He’s got some hippopotamus horsepower and demeanor on the d line + some concrete in his hands to utterly annihilate blocks. Great get off too when he is set and ready to fucking explode off the line. Love this pickup a ton!!!
I was also thinking it would be REAL NICE if this Summer Jason Moore does some Spartan steroid 300 AGOGE David Goggins psycho competitor mentality and physicality training. Get him from 6’6” 305 to 6’6” 275 and get him out on the edge and be a monster D End anchoring and fucking up tackles with his violence and physicality while Kenyatta CJ Hicks Sonny and Arvell “26.5 inch Dong” Reese blitz the dogshit out of our opponents all season. He looks $$$ with a leaner, tightly wound and angular muscled up frame vs being a big ass Hogg like he is now at 305. Lose 40 pounds of fat and gain 10 pounds of muscle this Summer for fucks sake and become a GOD on the edge mauling the right tackle all game. Get the Anavar and Winstrol and Tren loaded the fuck up MICK!!! INJECT!!!! HELLO!!?!
I didn’t necessarily quit drinking. I stopped getting drunk. Since August, maybe five times. Herb Jr finished his 77 mile hike. My oldest got her MCAT score. Im lit tonight. Death to my enemies.
I don’t really see the point in drinking anymore unless I’m in a social situation now marijuana is legalized. I rarely even drink on the golf course at this point.
Number 61 appears to guarantee you will be a long snapper. The only player of remote importance is Alan Jack, captain of the 1969 team.
Anyone else going to Seattle for the Washington game? Thinking about pulling the trigger. Been on the bucket list since phunkybuck told me about his trip
Yes. We got tickets behind the OSU bench for $500 each as part of a three game package from the Washington athletics site. So gonna try to sell the other two games and make some of that back.
Nice, thanks! I’ll look into this. My buddies wife is in grad school there so hoping she can hook it up somehow as well.
My biggest complaint anymore with recruiting is why are we even wasting our time on these top kids if we know we won't be able to compete financially? It's no secret that any top 5 kid at their position is going to most likely be a bidding war.
I guess I don't understand the concerns with recruiting. this the #4 class for the cycle, very much in line with 2013-2025 the "misses" are less about cash and more about Johnson needing to retire iyam I have no concerns with OSU being able to compete in the market dollar for dollar. but when you have an archaic coach who is reluctant to adapt with the changing times, it's going to lead to some misses
I think it is about money and other programs are clinging to the old way before the rules change tomorrow. Our athletic department is it's own worst enemy when it comes to this shit. Larry being old doesn't help but if he was as bad as our fan base thinks then I don't believe Day would let him continue to stay
I think the issues with recruiting have primarily been centered around 2 position groups, both of which being premium positions: OT and Edge. We have missed on elite level talent, primary due to money, and also failed to properly backfill those spots. I would argue that its been an issue for going on 3+ years and really hasnt had any sort of resolve. OT recruiting had been abysmal and it required us to bring in a transfer from San Diego State to fill out a spot. But even then, we were left incredibly thin and if not for Donovan Jackson turning into superman, OT depth ruins our season last year. Thankfully, we have built up a little depth to this point and Bowen has already done a much better job with the 26 class as we have an elite Ohio kid committed and a high ceiling developmental OT. Edge recruiting is another story as we continue to miss. I would argue that Jack and JT sticking around for 4 years, over 3 of those being years they started, has covered up the massive hole that we have at Edge right now. Kenyetta and Curry have been proven depth pieces, but outside of them we have no one on the roster that has any semblance of assurance to play well, or recruiting pedigree to give reasonable hope. In my estimation we only have 2 Edge players on the roster for next year that I think can even be reasonably discussed, and both are freshman this year.
Here is something I have wondered when it comes to this specific part of the discussion, and you might be the one to help answer. If you took Ohio States classes over the last 5 years and swapped out the WR recruits with "average" recruits, what does that do to our overall rankings? One thing I have seen mentioned, and even believed myself at times, is that the insane WR recruiting (both numbers and ranks) buoy the team ranking a decent amount. I would be curious to see if thats true.
I just want to win the mega-millions and fund Ohio State to get 25 5*s each year. Is that so much to ask?
Trev Alberts is AD at Texas A&M, easily top five school in dropping NIL bags in the post-NIL era. Alberts was one of 10 ADs on the committee that created and set rules for the new CSC, and was one of two SEC reps. Alberts met with the local press last week to discuss revenue sharing and new NIL deals. His quote, “We can’t go out and raise donor money, give it to Texas Aggies United and tell them, hey, go do some fair-market value NIL deals. That’s not going to pass NIL Go.” Other quotes in the article. https://www.kbtx.com/2025/06/24/what-is-fair-market-nil-why-is-it-so-important-texas-ams-athletic-future/?outputType=amp They currently have Victor Singleton, who nearly everyone on the OSU side thinks is 100% a NIL bag choice.
looking now. I won't use the FBS average as replacement because that's just silly. I will look at average B1G recruit signed per cycle and the STDV and likely use Avg + 1 STDV as a replacement level rating
The amount of money at issue makes that hard to do. You can’t really give a kid a duffel bag with $500,000 cash. Also, if any of these deals go to arbitration, the arbitrator has authority to subpoena all bank records.
here, I looked at 2021-25 and all WRs were replaced with the avg B1G signee + 1 deviation above the mean. it really doesn't change much the first 2 data points are the actual rank of the HS class (I rank by average player rating, not total pts) and the average player signed. then you can see the adjusted rating and where that would have put OSU. you can also see the actual deviation above the FBS mean OSU signs at and then the adjusted
Thank you! Overall better than I think most would expect, although 2024 seems to be brought up a bit by the WR's in that class.
