I hope we don't stupidly force the run game if it isn't working Saturday/the rest of the year. Just let Howard throw it. 31 rushes vs only 16 passes Saturday made zero sense.
The thing I can't get over is Michalski has been awful almost every time we've seen him play. Why did they think this was going to be different? Following the same logic, Fitzpatrick has been good/serviceable every time we see him but he can't get on the field.
And Hinzman was serviceable when he played, too. If he's still on the roster/available, give him a shot somewhere.
It's definitely been whack a mole. They focus on something all week and it gets better but then something else pops up. Someone is going to have to have a dominant game if we're going to win.
Eleven Warriors snap counts are up. A couple of interesting things: Out of 48 total snaps, Egbuka (42), Smith (41), and Tate (39) played the only WR snaps. No other WR played anything but special teams. Gee Scott played 44/48 snaps, obviously helping pass pro. Bennett Christian has played more snaps than Jelani Thurman in our last four games. Siereveld played 10 snaps. Hinzman has not played at all in two games, not even special teams. Montgomery burned a potential redshirt for 4 snaps. Nebraska ran 72 snaps, to our 48.
I’ll give Nebraska credit, they did a great job slowing the game down and limiting possessions. Granted, some of that was on the offense not being able to do anything for most of the second half.
Doug said that 10 of Michalski's 43 snaps resulted in an offensive play being completely blown up. That ain't great.
In the second half, we went: -3 and out, 7 yards -1 and out, int -3 and out, 8 yards -3 and out, 8 yards Nebraska takes the lead 17-14 -We respond 8 for 75 yards and a TD to make it 21-17 -3 and out, -6 yards -3 and out, victory formation
We were looking to go up 21-3 before halftime and get the ball to open the second half. We had 1st and 10 at the Nebraska 26. Henderson ran 4, then on 2nd and 6 Michalski got beat and Howard lost a strip sack fumble that Jackson recovered. Next play, Michalski beat again for a sack. We miss the FG. Nebraska goes the other way to make it 14-6.
The first possession of the game was really bad, too. Got great field position after a poor punt and then got stuffed on 4th and 1 on a very obvious play call that had no chance
When we try and run the ball on 4th down it’s so infuriating watching us run the slowest developing run play possible. Line the damn back up closer than normal and get him the ball fast
Up to that point, it was 14-3 and Nebraska’s drives were: -3 and out, -4 yards -3 and out, -1 yard -6 plays 20 yards punt -10 plays 54 yards FG, but Raiola ran 38 on one play that the blitz ran by him -3 and out, 1 yard
While I loved the pressure we were putting on Raiola, boy was it concerning how often we overran him.
Unless you're sneaking it from a few inches away, I'll never understand not spreading out the defense in short yardage. It's so dumb.
You could get out numbered but I agree it’s the better play. I used to cringe in short yardage situations when we’d go empty backfield, 4 wide, and 1 TE that would motion and Barrett would run it. It seemed like it was going to fail a lot but I can’t think of a time it actually did. It was so obvious as to what was coming but it just worked.
We shouldn't be afraid to throw it if teams still try to overload the box in that situation. Defenses definitely have the advantage if you're not spread out and are predictable
i bitch a lot during the games, but i get so tired of reading about "culture problems" at a program that's lost seven games in six years with that said, i'm chucking the remote at the tv if zen is starting at LT again this week
definitely odd the front 7 had a 21.2% havoc rate Saturday. other games under Day with +20% front 7 havoc? 2024 Iowa (22.9%) 2022 Iowa (22.0%) 2021 Indiana (29.6%) 2019 UMd (22.4%) 2019 Mia (OH) (23.8%) complaining about the front 7 Saturday is a bizarre choice
There isn’t a culture problem. There is, in my personal opinion as I posted Friday, a problem with Day waiting far too long to address obvious problems.
D havoc probably determines the game Saturday in 16 wins vs ranked teams, Day's defense averages 19.9% havoc (11.9% from the front 7, 8.0% by the back end) with 58% completions and 5.2 ypp. this yields 19.8 ppg allowed in the 9 losses vs ranked teams, Day's defense averages 11.4% havoc (5.5% from the front, 5.9% by the back) with 65% completions and 7.2 ypp. this yields 35.7 ppg allowed
Still remember where I was for that 4th quarter and was supposed to be getting the kids ready for a Halloween party that night ;)
I was sitting up next to the PSU visitor section, walking out with them after the shit they were talking was gratifying.
I am the designated driver for Purdue, where I will chaperon my wife and two other 50 year old women through a day of Gameday festivities. One of the women has a freshman daughter at OSU and has never been to a game, wants to see it all. Fast Eddie what are you doing on 11/9?
College officiating has been atrocious. I have no idea how that was determined to be targeting in the first place.
I tend to think that the bad calls even out over time, but damn if we don’t have quite the collection of game changing 4th Q calls going the other way. That play was ruled a catch. If it’s a catch with no targetting, then it’s a fumble and our ball. The game ends. We got an int that drive, but it’s over right there if called correctly. I also get the irony, to the extent any Penn State fans are lurking, that we have a nice list of blown calls in our favor against PSU.
we've definitely been on the wrong end of some truly awful (or at least unfortunate) targeting calls and missed calls in recent years
Since there’s a whole lot of shit posting going on today, I’ll contine this I took out 4 plays and 56 yards from the overall tally because it’s silly to say he played the Carolina game and Carolina is so bad it certainly wouldn’t hurt his stats Daniels averages 300 total ypg, 247 passing and 53 rushing ypg. 11 touchdowns, 2 turnovers. 71.8 completion% 104.3 passer rating, 72.7 QBR Stroud averaged about 274 passing, 11 rushing with 26 touchdowns and 6 turnovers. 63.9 completion % 100.8 passer rating 58.3 QBR It’s close but sticking with it and certainly not silly to say he’s been better. Kliff is a good OC but the weapons are trash, there’s Terry then mediocre to serviceable. Noah Brown has been ok but has had bad drops. Unrelated, Jalyn Holmes had a sack yesterday when I didn’t even know he was on the team tl; dr I win, you and corch lose
I don't think "underestimated" is the right word to use here, but Fryar does deserve a leaf for this....
Most of the 2nd half offensive issues were down to Howard playing like shit Zen was a huge problem but so was Howard’s decision making. Got the yips in the 3rd, possibly from Zen
