Ya, it went from “that’s great play design” to “we should have figured something out by the mid 3rd quarter.”
Borland just isn't fast/athletic enough. Was born 40 years too late Werner improved a ton over the past few years. Think he'll play a long time in the nfl
Really a masterclass in ineptitude by Coombs. Even if our guys weren't good enough to match Bama's, at least put them in position to succeed. What a disaster
It felt like they weren’t even coached to handle and anticipate the goal line motions that led to several easy TDs
If there is a bright side it’s that you guys didn’t deserve to be in the playoff at all and you were never beating bama, so there’s that.
Joy of not getting pressure with 4. If it was your money where would it be on Tuf vs Harris? Sark couldn’t call a bad game against this D. The draft will tell us how bad this D really was. #1 CB got beat multiple times every game.
Feel for sermon. What a roller coaster for him. Transfers. COVID. Stinks for a while. Then becomes one of the best backs ever. Sets the record. Then out on the first play and now he's gone.
I’ve never ignored someone before on here. Are you guys quoting his posts? Even if you are I can’t see anything by him. It’s actually really nice. Would recommend.
Despite the tough loss/blowout, still thankful we got to enjoy another season of Fields at QB and some of the other guys like Wyatt, Hilliard, etc. And thankful that many of them and their parents and the coaches fought for a season after the B1G initially cancelled
Assuming the following guys go pro, here's what we're looking at next year... I'm going to assume anyone on the fence is going. Justin Fields Chris Olave Wyatt Davis Josh Myers Jeremy Ruckert Tyreke Smith Tommy Togiai Shaun Wade QB: Stroud/Miller RB: Teague/Miyan/Treveyon WR: Wilson/Williams/JSN/Fleming TE: Stover/Royer/Hart (unless Hausmann or Farrell come back) OT: Johnson/NPF OG:Miller/Jones C: Wypler DE: Friday/Harrison/JJB/Potter/Sawyer DT: Cage/Vincent/Hamilton LB: Gant/Mitchell/Simon/Melton CB: Williamson/Brown/Banks/Martinez/Cavazos S: Proctor/Ransom We could really use some transfer help at DT and TE
Do you blame the defense this season on lack of players/talent at DB, or on Coombs and his defensive scheme? A little of both? Do you give him another season with an influx of (his) talent to fix it? Does waiting another year put you in a bad spot with recruits if it’s more of the same? Do you bring in help and keep Coombs? There’s some definite questions on that side of the ball that are going to need answered.
Came into the season worried about replacing guys on the interior DL and Dobbins. First game of the season Garrett and Togiai put the worries on the interior DL to rest. Sermon was on fire from the MSU game on (over 9 ypc). Togiai out going into the game. Sermon out on first carry. Darn.
Think Ruckert and Togia stay. Garrett likely gone, but he could really improve his status if he came back.
This is a mixture of both. We lost 7 starters off the 2019 defense, including 3/4 of the secondary, and returning starters included guys like Borland. We did not recruit well in the back seven under Schiano/Davis. With that said, we were repeatedly embarrassed with our guys out of position. That’s coaching, and it should tag Washington, Barnes and Mattison. Larry Johnson’s unit held the defense together.
Yep, we were clearly the second best team this season. Unfortunately the gap between Alabama at their best and everyone else was massive.
I think it's a mixture of both. The options of who to throw out there was not good. There has been no development in the back end, due to poor coaching previously. Coombs definitely seems over his head, but IDK if you can remove him after 1 year. I'd love to see us bring in an experienced guy (who's not already 70) to help run things. I'm fine with keeping Washington. The players love him, and the LBs did seem to play pretty well at times. Do fault Washington/Coombs for not getting Tuf out in times when he's clearly over-matched. Maybe the options behind him are just that bad, but this wasn't the first time he was abused by athletic teams.
Our inability to trade punches on offense with Sermon out and Fields off doomed any chance. Our defense needs an overhaul. We will never compete on this type of stage if Indiana can throw for 500 yards against us.
Sermon going out felt a lot like Teddy v UF. They looked lost and Day didn’t have a plan B. Fields could have shredded them if he could learn how to slide. None of that fixes the bullshit defense.
I’ve been a Coombs critic, but it’s not fair to remove Coombs after one year. We are not a fundamentally sound defense though. We do not tackle well and we are routinely out of position, lost in some of the most basic pass game concepts. We aren’t going to fire anyone. Best hope is Mattison retires, we hire a young DB coach, and this defense is entirely Coombs baby in 2021 to see what he does with it.
Also, between UF, LSU, USC, Perdue, and Clemson results, I’ve become completely immune to blow out losses. I was over the loss as it was unfolding last night. Didn’t even have trouble falling asleep. Is this what domestic abuse feels like?
I mentioned this last night, but I really hope we are able to have a full set of Spring practices. This is going to be a crazy Spring and Summer camp. Almost every position on offense and defense is open for competition.
Sad that you guys let Burrow, a Natty Champ, leave only to take a guy that couldn’t get it done. SAD!
Great game last night guys, awesome team but just went our way. Feel bad for Sermon, think he comes back? If ESPN could stop showing those Zeke runs that would be great. See you next year
Same. I’m at work like nothing ever happened last night. If we lost like we did against Clemson last year I would be hanging from my ceiling fan.
As much as blow-outs suck, I'd rather lose that way than a close one wondering which few plays cost us. If we have to take a loss, get blown out, then score some garbage points to make the optics look better, lol.
By halftime I was telling my sleeping wife that even if all the players out with Covid or injured were on the field we still lose that game by 14+.
Hangover-wise I feel like a million bucks this morning compared to the mornings after the last two Clemson games.
Do we have any available list of who has declared NFL and who is coming back? Any site done an article? Usually, the date to declare is around 1/15, but I don’t see a date set this year to declare or exercise the option to return granted by the NCAA for 2020 seniors.
Going to let last nights game die and move on to the offseason. Few thoughts as we move forward and sorry for the word dump: - Coombs 100% got outcoached last night but it was a shit year with a serious lack of developmental time. The lack of confidence in any of the backup DB's is concerning but we do have some young studs ande need Coombs to get to work on the younger guys. - I dont envision us letting him go after 1 year but I agree that it would be nice to bring in another coach to offer assistance. - Banks might be the most important defensive player that needs to take a step this offseason. He looked good at times this season and I think has the talent to be elite. - Ready for a new group of LB's to step in. I think Werner was underrated a bit but we brought in alot of talent in those spots over the last couple cycles and I am interested to see who steps up. - D-Line I am less worried about. We have a ton of talent there and I trust Johnson to get the most out of it. Tyreke should come back and this is a "make or break" offseason for Harrison. - OL we will be set for next year. NPP should come back and Johnson should step in as the starting LT. Jones looked great and Miller should settle in with a full offseason. - WRs we will be loaded. Garret Wilson is a stud and the 3 freshman looked great, especially JSN. - we will need to the freshman RB's to come in and produce right away. Teague is not good enough to be a feature back and we need guys back there that can make cuts. I am excited to see what Miyann can do after a full offseason with Mick, he could be a wrecking ball next year. - I am oddly not concerned at all for the QB position. As long as we have Ryan Day I think we will get very good/elite level QB play. Stroud should be a perfect mix of pocket QB with some wiggle, get him all the reps we can this offseason and let it fly early next year.
I hope Day is half as good as Urban is at processing people. By all accounts Master Teague is a great kid, I just don't want him running the ball for Ohio State anymore.
Feel bad for Tuf but way past time to move on, cutting yourself off at the knee playing him vs good passing teams
